17 shops, hut gutted in blaze in TN

Seventeen shops and a hut were gutted in a fire at a bazaar in Tarangambadi in the district early on Wednesday, but there were no casualties, official sources said.

They said the fire broke out at around 3 AM and soon spread to nearby shops, destroying property worth several lakhs of Rupees.

Fire tenders from Thirukkadaiyur, Porayar, Sirkazhi, Mayiladuthurai and other places rushed to the spot and doused the flames.

The reason for the fire was not immediately known, the sources said.

California gurdwara vandalised

A Sikh gurdwara in Riverside, California has been vandalised in an apparent hate crime with the word ‘TERRIST!’ in capital letters spray painted around the complex, according to a community organisation.

Citing community members, the Sikh American Legal Defence and Education Fund (SALDEF), said Tuesday vandalism occurred sometime during the July 29/30 night.

SALDEF said it’s in contact with Riverside County Sheriff Department, the Riverside Police Department, the FBI and Department of Justice urging them to investigate the incident as a hate crime and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Over 645,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon: UNHCR

The UN Higher Council for Refugees (UNHCR) has said its offices in Lebanon completed the registration of more than 50,000 Syrian refugees in July, bringing the total number of those receiving aid to over 645,000.

More than 541,000 Syrian refugees have been registered in Lebanon, while over 104,000 are still waiting for the registration process to be completed, reported Xinhua citing the UN refugee agency Tuesday.

Shutdown begins in Seemandhra against Telangana decision

Protests began in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions Wednesday, a day after the United Progressive Alliance Coordination Committee agreed to the division of Andhra Pradesh and the formation of a separate Telangana state.

Road transport came to a standstill while shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed in the two regions, usually referred to as Seemandhra.

Due to depression in Bay of Bengal, Met. Office has predicted heavy rainfall during the next 48 hours in some districts of Coastal Andhra and Khammam and Warangal districts of Telangana region.

Moderate rainfall is likely in some places of Rayalseema region. Sky will be cloudy in Hyderabad city and mild to moderate rainfall is likely here.

Sri Lanka arrests 65 Indian fishermen

Sixty-five Indian fishermen in nine trawlers have been detained by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly violating the international maritime border.

Naval spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya has said that 34 of them in five trawlers were arrested off the coast north of Point Pedro in the north, yesterday.

While another 31 were arrested east of Mullaithivu along with four vessels.

“The arrest came last night and the fishermen have been handed over to the authorities in Point Pedro in the north and the eastern port district of Trincomalee” he said.

US calls for eco reforms, wary of India, China and Germany

US President Barack Obama has stressed on the need for economic reforms in US saying that not doing so would mean waving the white flag to the rest of the world especially to countries like India, Germany and China.

“If we don’t make these investments and these reforms, then we might be waving the white flag to the rest of the world, because they’re moving forward. They’re not slowing down,” Obama said yesterday.

He added that countries like China, Germany and India are going forward and US can’t just sit by. Doing nothing doesn’t help the middle class.

‘Spanish train driver was on phone when it derailed’

The driver of the train, which derailed and killed 79 people last week in Spain, was speaking on his phone when the accident occurred, a Spainsh court has found.

The train had derailed July 25 just a few hundred metres beyond the cut-off point for the European Rail Traffic Management System.

Investigators said that Francisco Jose Garzon, the train driver, received a call from the staff of the rail company Renfe to discuss the route he needed to follow, Xinhua reported Tuesday.

Azhar no one to decide which body should get recognition: DCBA

DCBA vice-president Deepak Tanwar today asked Mohammad Azharuddin — the newly-appointed DBA president — to stay away from the sport and said the former India cricket captain is no one to decide which association should get recognition from BAI.

“Delhi Capital Badminton Association (DCBA) has got all the recognition which is required for an association, whereas Delhi Badminton Association (DBA) does not have this kind of recognition,” said Tanwar.

Tihar gets its own radio station — TJ FM Radio

In yet another first, the country’s largest prison Tihar Jail has now got its very own FM radio station.

Director General of Prisons Vimla Mehra today launched the ‘TJ FM Radio’ at Central Jail No 4 in the Tihar complex.

“The FM Radio has been established to meet the twin objectives of entertainment and training of prisoners as Radio Jockey (RJ). The prisoners can engage themselves in creative activities and also get trained as Radio Jockey (RJ),” Tihar Jail spokesperson Sunil Gupta said.

Proposal to build kitchen shed in 7225 schools in Bihar

Alarmed by death of 23 children after eating poisonous midday meal in a Chhapra school, the state government today decided to build kitchen shed in 7225 schools, including in Saran district.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of state cabinet presided by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

A sum of Rs 1.5 lakh has been approved for building each kitchen shed, an official sources said.

Out of this, state would have major share of investment Rs 90,000 per kitchen shed while Centre contribution would be Rs 60,000, they said.

‘Rights of settlers from Andhra, Rayala areas to be protected’

Constitutional rights of settlers from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions including the right to life and property will be safeguarded in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Damodara Raja Narasimha said today.

“People from Andhra and Rayala regions who have settled in Hyderabad are part of the Telangana culture. Their right to life and property will be protected,” he told a press conference after the UPA and CWC formally endorsed Telangana.

The Indian Constitution confers the right to live anywhere in the country, he added.

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan’s latest blockbuster ‘Chennai Express’ will get the biggest release for any Indian film in the UK.

The comic caper, co-starring Deepika Padukone and directed by Rohit Shetty, will hit cinemas around the world to coincide with Eid next Friday.

“I am very glad the film is getting such a big release here. UK audiences are fantastic. I don’t believe that actors have regional appeal but I have to accept that some of my star value is largely down to audiences here,” said Shah Rukh Khan, during a promotional tour for the film in London today.
