UN calls for urgent talks after death toll rises to 100,000 in Syrian civil war

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced that the death toll in Syria”s civil war has risen to more than 100,000.

According to the Stuff.co.nz, Ban said that it is imperative to have a peace conference in Geneva as soon as possible to halt the violence going on in 2-1/2 year civil war.

The Syrian civil war aiming to remove the Ba’ath government headed by President Bashar al-Assad has turned brutal after foreign powers have started aiding the rebels in the country.

Two more Andhra legislators quit

Two more legislators from Seemandhra Friday announced their resignation, taking to 19 the number of legislators who quit since Thursday to thwart any decision by the centre to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh.

Four-year-old sexually assaulted in Delhi

A four-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by her neighbour in the national capital, police said Friday. The accused has been arrested.

The incident was reported from the Punjabi Bagh area in west Delhi and the accused Naresh, 21, was arrested Thursday.

“The medical examination of the girl confirmed sexual assault and, based on that, Naresh was arrested. He has been sent to judicial custody,” a police officer said.

The accused has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

One can eat for Re.1: Farooq Abdullah

After Raj Babbar and Rasheed Masood, now union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah Friday has said that one can have full meal for Re.1.

“One can eat for Re.1, if desired. It depends on the common man how much they can afford and they have to manage in that only,” Abdullah told reporters on the ongoing debate on poverty.

Goa medical student accuses doctors of sexual harassment

Three senior doctors attached to Goa’s only state-run medical college have been booked for sexual harassment following a complaint by a medical student, police said Friday.

The student at the Goa Medical College and Hospital near here said in her complaint that the three doctors sent her sexually explicit messages, passed vulgar remarks and have been intimidating her since February 2013, a police spokesperson told reporters here.

Man dies suspiciously at Rajendranagar

A man, who was on a visit to his relative’s house, died suspiciously at Rajendranagar area. Rajendranagar police told this.

According to police sources 45-year-Mohammed Siraj, resident of Mangalhat was a businessman by occupation.

A woman committed suicide by consuming acid under Mailardevpally Police Station limits. According to sources 50-year-old, Sajida Begum who was the wife of Moin, resident of Mailardevpally died after consuming acid.

According to police Sajida Begum was suffering from mental tension. Police has registered a case and investigations are underway.

10 die in China nursing home fire

Ten people died in a fire that broke out at a nursing home for senior citizens in northeast China’s Heilongjiang province on Friday, authorities said.

The blaze broke out at about 1.15 am (local time) in the in-patient building of the Lianhe Senior Nursing Home in Hailun City, Xinhua reported.

There were 32 elderly people in the in-patient building that covers an area of 300 square meters when the fire broke out.

Wife kills husband
(Siasat News): A woman severely beat her husband and later allegedly strangulated him to death. To pose this murder as accident and to mislead the police, the wife pushed the husband down the staircase.

This incident occurred in Chintal Basthi where 49-year-old Laxmi Narayana got killed by his wife Manjula. As per the details, the deceased with his wife and two sons has been living in Chintal Basthi.

Three-storey building collapses in Ahmedabad

A three-storey building collapsed in the city on Friday and some persons were feared trapped in it, a fire department official said.

The building ‘Rupal Apartment’ crashed in Ranip area of the city at around 11 am, the official said, adding that rescue operations were on.

Two persons, who were rescued from the building, were rushed to hospital, they said, adding that civil defence personnel were also helping in rescue work.

‘India,China trying to develop mechanism to prevent face-offs’

India and China are trying to develop effective mechanisms to prevent the “embarrassing” face-offs between their troops along the “disputed” points of the Line of Actual Control, Defence Minister A K Antony said here today.

Terming the 21-day stand-off between the two sides in Depsang valley in Daulat Beg Oldi area as an “unusual” incident, the Defence Minister said the two countries will meet soon in Beijing to discuss issues and try to find a solution for such “unpleasant incidents”.

Spain train operator bragged about fast speed on Facebook before fatal accident

One of the operators of the Spanish train, which derailed on Thursday claiming 80 lives, has posted photos of the train’s speedometer on Facebook and bragged about it going too fast before the fatal accident.

The New York Post reports that Francisco Jose Garzon Amo posted a screenshot of the train’s speedometer reading 200 km/h.

Garzon is in custody at Santiago de Compostela’s main hospital where he is recovering from minor injuries, the report added.

Couple born same day, wedded 75 yrs, die day apart

A Southern California husband and wife who were born on the same day and celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary last year have died just a day apart.

The couple’s son Les Brown Jr. Tells the Long Beach Press-Telegram yesterday that 94-year-old Helen Brown died July 16 and 94-year-old Les Brown died July 17. She had stomach cancer. He had Parkinson’s disease.

No talks with Pakistan on Aafia Siddiqui: US

The United States has ruled out any prisoner swap talks with Pakistan involving jailed neuroscientist Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, according to media reports.

“The United States government is not in discussions with the government of Pakistan on a prisoner exchange or transfer involving Dr. Aafia Siddiqui,” State Department spokesperson Marie Harf was quoted as saying in the reports.

She was replying to a question that there were reports that US government had offered Pakistan to sign a prisoner swap agreement for extradition of Siddiqui.

Obama nominates Indian-American to key judiciary post

Indian-American legal luminary Vince Girdhari Chhabria has been nominated by US President Barack Obama to a key judiciary post in California.

Chhabria, nominated to be US District Judge for the Northern District of California, is currently Deputy City Attorney for Government Litigation and as the Co-Chief of Appellate Litigation at the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office, where he has worked since 2005.

Obama announced his nominated along with five other judicial posts, all of which requires Senate confirmation.

Former union minister Arun Nehru dies in Gurgaon hospital

Arun Nehru, former union minister and powerful figure during the prime ministership of Rajiv Gandhi, passed away on Thursday night after prolonged illness.

Nehru, 69, a cousin of Rajiv Gandhi and minister for internal security in his government, died in a hospital in Gurgaon, according to family sources.

The funeral will take place at the Lodhi crematorium here on Friday? Nehru had been admitted to the Fortis hospital in Gurgaon 18 days ago and passed away at 10.47pm on Tuesday.

Soren orders probe into police firing

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren Thursday ordered a probe into police firing on protestors at the construction site of an NTPC power plant in Hazaribagh district, in which one person was killed and three others were injured.

“Jharkhand CM has ordered probe in the police firing. North Chhotanagpur commissioner and inspector general of police will probe the incident and submit a report in a week,” said a press release issued by the state government.

Soren has also called NTPC officials to discuss the issue, it said.
