The feat could allow secure quantum communications to work over long distances, according to New Scientist.

BP drugs could help beat Alzheimer’s

A group of drug used to combat low blood pressure can help slow the rate of cognitive decline typical of dementia, a research has suggested.

According to research, these drugs, known as ACE inhibitors, could even boost brain power.

The researchers compared the rates of cognitive decline in 361 patients who had either been diagnosed with Alzheimer”s disease, vascular dementia, or a mix of both.

Eighty five of the patients were already taking ACE inhibitors; the rest were not.

The crucial meeting of the Congress Core Committee began here on Friday evening amid speculations that it would discuss the Telangana issue.

The meeting, being held at Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s residence, gains significance as it could include Telangana in the agenda for the next meeting of Congress Working Committee, which has been authorised to take a final decision on the statehood issue. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday hit back at Digvijaya Singh, who stirred up a new controversy after calling fellow party leader Meenakshi Natarajan ‘a 100 percent tunch maal’, saying that the Congress general secretary is not in a stable state of mind and needs to be admitted to a hospital urgently.

“Though it is an internal matter of the Congress party I maintain that Digvijaya Singh is not in a stable state of mind. He has become a mental case. He urgently needs to be admitted to a hospital where he can be cured immediately,” said BJP leader Vinay Katiyar.

08 serial blasts: Court rejects plea for NBW against IM man

In a setback to Delhi Police, a court has rejected its plea to issue non-bailable warrant against a suspected active member of Indian Mujahideen alleged to have helped some modules involved in 2008 serial blasts to flee India after Batla House encounter.

The court said it cannot issue NBW against Faizan Ahmed Sultan as he was never named as an accused or a suspect in the charge sheets filed in connection with the September 13, 2008 blasts.

Time for decision on Telangana has come: Digvijaya Singh

The process of consultation over the Telangana issue is over and the time has come for a decision, Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh said Friday.

“We shall let you know the decision taken,” he said in New Delhi amid hectic activity of the party leadership to take a final decision on the issue of separate statehood to Telangana.

Animal rights group holds protest outside Delhi Zoo

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)’s Indian volunteers today staged a protest outside Delhi Zoo.

Two volunteers wore tiger bodysuits and posed inside a cage as part of their “Save the Tiger-Say No to Zoos” campaign.

“If human beings cannot be in a cage for an hour, why are animals caged inside zoos?” one of the volunteers said.

The protest was organised in the wake of deaths of six tigers in the zoo within a span of six months.

“The big cats suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder when kept in cages and become depressed.

Body of Gujarat fisherman who died in Pak jail flown home

Twenty-one days after his death in a Karachi jail, the body of a 37-year-old Indian fisherman was flown home to Mumbai, from where it is being brought to his native village in Junagadh district of Gujarat, a state Fisheries official said today.

“The mortal remains of Dudhabhai Naranbhai Makwana, who passed away in Pakistani custody on July 4 following a cardiac arrest, reached Mumbai late last night and was expected to reach Ghatvad village of Kodinar taluka by this evening,” Gujarat Fisheries department official J K Rathod, who received the body, told PTI.

Court issues NBWs against Thackeray, Parkar for non-appearance

A Delhi court today issued non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against Maharashtra Navanirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray and its spokesperson Shirish Parkar on a complaint about their alleged hate speeches against the people of Bihar.

The court also rejected their plea for exemption from personal appearance in the case.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Devendra Kumar Sharma issued NBWs against Thackeray and Parkar for August 24.

After Congress spokesperson Raj Babbar and Congress leader Rasheed Masood, now Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah on Friday has said that one can have full meal for Re.1.

JC favours Rayala-Telangana

Former Minister JC Diwakar Reddy on Friday stated that he would prefer Rayala-Telangana if the Centre decides to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh.

Talking to reporters in the Assembly premises, Diwakar Reddy said he was against the division of Andhra Pradesh. However, he said if the Congress High Command decides to bifurcate the State, then he would prefer Rayalaseema to go with Telangana.

Govt to consider Bihar’s demand on MNREGA wage parity

In yet another indication of growing proximity between Congress and JD(U), the government today offered to “sympathetically” consider Bihar’s demand for bringing parity between MNREGA wage and minimum wage rates in the state.

“I can perfectly understand Nitish Kumar’s sentiments and concerns. I sympathise with Nitish Kumar, because under the minimum wage act in Bihar, the minimum wage is Rs 162 and the MNREGA wage is Rs 138,” Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said here reacting to Bihar chief minister’s demand.

Patrol hours for Goa beaches extended till midnight

Goa’s beaches will be patrolled till midnight by a special police division when the tourism season begins in September this year, a minister said here today.

Goa Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar told reporters that the India Reserve Batallion (IRB), which has been guarding Goa’s beaches in the absence of a tourist police, would now maintain vigil till midnight to curb crimes.

In the last tourist season, IRB personnel were stationed at beaches until 9 P.M.

Veteran freedom fighter dies

Veteran freedom fighter Vishnu Dayal Gupta died following prolonged illness at a hospital here, family sources said today.

He was 91.

Gupta breathed his last yesterday at Rural Institute of Medical Sciences in Saifai where he had been admitted a couple of days ago, they said.

The deceased, basically a resident of Feelkhana near Kanpur, was living here with with his younger daughter.

He is survived by two sons and three daughters.

Gupta had taken an active part in the freedom movement and was also jailed during the period.

Boy dies as school van runs over him

A minor boy died after he was allegedly run over by his school van here today, police said.

The 11-year-old victim, after alighting from the van on reaching the school, came in front of it when the driver without noticing him moved the vehicle, they said.

The boy, a class VI student, sustained serious injuries in the incident and was rushed to Government Hospital where he died during the treatment, police said.

Later, the errant driver was arrested and a case registered against him, they added.

Delhi govt finalises details of food security scheme

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said her government has finalised all the nitty gritties to implement the ambitious food security scheme with an aim to make the city “hunger-free”.

The scheme will be rolled out on August 20, the birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi. She said Delhi will be the first state in the country to launch the scheme.

Though the scheme will be launched on August 20, the beneficiaries will start getting entitled food grains from September 1.

Shinde skips DP hqrs foundation-laying ceremony at 11th hour

The foundation stone laying ceremony for the proposed new headquarters of Delhi Police was marred by a controversy when Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, the Chief Guest of the event, skipped the function citing inadequency in the documentation of the project.

“It (the building) still has not been given its environmental and height clearances, among other.

“Home Ministry officials suggested I should not go there,” he told reporters here minutes after cancelling the visit to the function organised at Jai Singh Marg near Connaught Place.
