39 killed, over 100 injured in Pakistan blasts

At least 39 people were killed and over 100 injured in two bomb blasts which occurred Friday evening in a market in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), the Dawn reported citing officials.

The twin explosions occurred in a market in Kurram tribal region when people were buying food to break their Ramadan fast, said a police official.

The blasts left 20 of the 100 injured in a critical condition apart from the casualties, said officials at the Governor House in Peshawar.

Satyanarayan Singh had recently brought back his daughter to the city from Shimoga where she was staying with her maternal grandparents after the death of his wife, saying he would provide her a sound education, according to police.

One week of rain claims 22 lives in AP; crops damaged

As many as 22 people were killed and crops in over 60,000 hectares suffered damage due to heavy rains that has lashed Andhra Pradesh for a week now.

Besides the death of 22 people, five persons sustained injuries in various rain-related incidents, official sources said here on Friday.

They did not provide details of the rain-related deaths.

Standing cotton, soya bean, maize, paddy and pulses crops were damaged in 60,466 hectares in eight districts, which were worst hit by the downpour, they said.

As many as 409 minor irrigation tanks and 3,877 kms of roads also suffered damage.

10-yr old boy commits suicide when asked to go to school

A 10-year-old tribal boy allegedly committed suicide in Odisha’s Keonjhar district when his mother asked him to go to school.

The incident occurred at Dania village in Banspal block yesterday when the boy Sanjay Dehury allegedly set himself afire after pouring kerosene.

He died while being shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital from the district headquarters hospital, the police said.

Sanjay, a Class V student in Saharpur Ashram School, had come home for Rath Yatra and was unwilling to return to school, they said.

GHMC chief admits to bad shape of city roads

Responding to news reports about horrible conditions of the city roads, Commissioner of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Krishna Babu on Friday admitted that the roads in the city have turned into death traps.

Speaking to the media here, the GHMC commissioner said the Corporation could not take up road repair works owing to incessant downpour. He said some voluntary organizations have taken up the task of filling the road potholes with mud. He felt that the city motorists would have to bear the inconvenience for the next 15 days. (NSS)

A Delhi court sentenced a man to seven years in jail by for kidnapping and raping the minor sister of his employer.

Additional Sessions Judge T.R. Naval held 24-year-old Shahbuddin guilty of raping the 17-year-old girl in 2010, but took a moderate view towards him in awarding punishment as he has to support his wife and child.

The court said: “In view of the evidence on record, it is held that prosecution had proved that the accused (Shahbuddin) committed sexual intercourse with the girl against her will and without her consent.”
