AI flight delayed due to tiff between pilot, passenger

An Air India flight from Patna to New Delhi was delayed by about 30 minutes tonight due to the pilot’s refusal to take off after a tiff with a passenger midair.

The pilot had a tiff with a passenger on board in the air itself while the flight was coming from New Delhi to Patna. On reaching Patna airport, the pilot Rahul Singh demanded police action against the passenger, the police said.

He refused to fly back the flight number 416 to New Delhi from here before the passenger was punished.

Suicide bomber kills anti-Taliban leader in Afghan: officials

A suicide bomber on a motorcycle struck a busy marketplace in eastern Afghanistan today, killing at least seven people including an anti-Taliban militia leader, officials said.

The attack, which took place in the Qarabagh district of the insurgency-wracked Ghazni province, also injured seven civilians, deputy provincial police chief Asadullah Insafi told AFP.

“We think that the target of the attack was commander Dawlat Khan, who was martyred along with three of his bodyguards, and three civilians in this attack,” Insafi said.

BJP MP to build Kargil war memorial in Himachal Pradesh

Paying homage to martyrs of Kargil war on the 14th anniversary of Operation Vijay, BJP MP Anurag Singh Thakur today said a war memorial will be constructed in Himachal Pradesh to honour them.

Thakur said he would lead the initiative with a contribution of Rs one crore from his MPLADS fund and get the remaining from other MPs for the construction, which is estimated at Rs 11 crore.

Teacher arrested for carrying pesticide in school

A teacher was today arrested for carrying a bottle of pesticide in a school at Sasaram in Bihar’s Rohtas district, close on the heels of death of 23 school students who took poisoned midday meal in the state’s Chapra area.

When the students saw a bottle of pesticide thymet in the hand of a teacher Manoj Chaudhury, they raised an alarm and informed the matter to the principal of a government middle school at Mayurdihra village, the police said.

The principal informed Dimara police station which took the teacher into custody.

UN, Lebanon discuss measures for Syrian refugees

The UN refugee agency is negotiating with Lebanon over the country’s plan to enforce new border controls that could affect the flow of Syrian refugees.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees representative in Beirut Ninette Kelley said it Friday in a statement, Xinhua reported Friday. “We understand from the government that they are now exerting stricter scrutiny at the border.”

US poised to sell Iraq USD 2 billion in military equipment

The Pentagon has informed the US Congress of a possible sale of USD 2 billion worth of military equipment to Iraq, officials said today.

Lawmakers, notified yesterday, have 30 days to raise any objections to the plan, which consists of three contracts.

The first includes 12 Bell 412 EP helicopters and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support totalling an estimated USD 300 million.

Billionaire Texas oilman, developer and philanthropist George P. Mitchell has died at his home in Galveston. He was 94.

Mitchell was the son of Greek immigrants and became one of the wealthiest men in the U.S. He’s considered the father of hydraulic fracking to recover natural gas from shale deposits, pioneering the now common process that’s led to an energy boom.

Mitchell’s family announced his death yesterday on the family foundation website.

The posting said he died of natural causes while surrounded by family.

US to return two Guantanamo inmates to Algeria

The United States said it will return two Algerians detained at Guantanamo Bay to their homeland as part of efforts to eventually close the War on Terror military prison.

“The United States remains determined to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay,” the White House said in a statement yesterday.

“In support of those efforts, today the Department of Defence certified to Congress its intent to repatriate an additional two detainees to Algeria.

100 bodies from prison massacre exhumed in Peru

The bodies of more than 100 accused Shining Path rebels slain during a 1986 prison uprising have been exhumed in and around Lima since mid-July.

Leading Libya activist killed in drive-by shooting

Six militants gunned down in northwest Pakistan

Six militants were killed in a gunbattle with security forces after some armed militants attacked a check point with heavy weaponry in Pakistan Khyber Pakthunkhwa province in the wee hours of Saturday, security sources said.

The militants attacked a security check point of the Frontier Corps at Spin Tall Qala in Hangu district of Khyber Paktunkhwa bordering restive Kurram agency late night yesterday, resulting in a gunbattle that continued for hours.

United, ANA find wire problems on 787 transmitters

Two airlines disclosed issues with the wiring on their Boeing 787’s emergency transmitters the same part of the plane that is getting scrutiny after a parked jet burned earlier this month.

United Airlines said yesterday that it found a pinched wire during an inspection of one of its six 787s. Earlier, Japan’s All Nippon Airways found damage to wiring on two Boeing 787 locater beacons. It flies 20 of the jets.
