Obama names Indian-American judge in California

President Barack Obama has nominated yet another Indian American legal luminary, Vince Girdhari Chhabria, to a key judicial post in California.

Nominated to be US District Judge for the Northern District of California, Chhabria is currently deputy city attorney for government litigation at the San Francisco city attorney’s office, where he has worked since 2005.

Announcing Chhabria’s nomination along with five other judicial posts, Obama said: “These men and women have had distinguished legal careers and I am honoured to ask them to continue their work as judges on the federal bench.”

Infected injections, unsafe blood transfusions see Hepatitis rising in India

India’s Hepatitis burden is rising due to the use of infected injections and unsterilised medical equipment as well as unsafe blood transfusions.

In India, nearly two-thirds of the injections being used are unsafe, posing health hazards for the recipients. Unhygienic use of needles in acupuncture and tattooing also has a significant role in spreading hepatitis, according to experts.

Coffee can reduce suicide risk by half: Study

A study has suggested having two to four cups of coffee every day can reduce the risk of suicide among men and women by 50 per cent.

The finding was reached after researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health reviewed data from three previous US studies.

They found that the risk of suicide amongst adults, drinking several cups of caffeinated coffee on a daily basis, was about half compared to those who drank decaffeinated coffee, very little coffee or no coffee at all, Daily Mail reported.

Bihar teacher held after pesticide found in school kitchen

A teacher was arrested in Bihar’s Rohtas district for keeping pesticide in a government primary school’s kitchen where mid day meal used to be cooked, said police officials Saturday.

This is the first case when a teacher has been arrested for keeping pesticide in school’s kitchen and it comes less than two weeks after 23 children died after eating contaminated food at a primary school in state’s Saran district.

Poverty debate: Kirti Azad pulls up Digvijay Singh, Kapil Sibal

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kirti Azad on Saturday lashed out at Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh and Communications and IT Minister Kapil Sibal over the poverty debate, saying their statements were meant to divert people”s attention.

“Why have Digvijay and Sibal awakened now? Were they in slumber? They had given that data of rupees 26 and rupees 33 nearly two and half years ago. They want to divert people”s attention after their leaders were found wanting in wake of their comments that a meal is available for rupee one, rupees five and rupees 12,” he said.

Telangana statehood row: BJP accuses Congress of betraying people

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today accused the Congress-led UPA Government of not being serious on the issue surrounding the formation of a separate Telangana state.

BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar alleged that the Congress has been betraying the people for the last so many years on the issue.

“Telangana’s demand is a demand for justice. We want complete statehood of Telangana,” he said, while reiterating that the BJP will agree for nothing less than complete statehood of Telangana.

Kolkata police arrest man for attempting to molest woman techie on train

Kolkata Police have arrested the man who tried to allegedly molest a woman techie aboard a train on Sunday, forcing her to jump out. The accused identified as Debshankar Sau, was arrested from Uttarpara in Hoogly district yesterday.

The 25-year-old woman had jumped off the train at Belur, a few kilometres from Howrah. She suffered injuries to her head and hands and locals found her in an unconscious state near the railway track. She was then shifted to a hospital where West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited her and offered to cover all her medical expenses. (ANI)

Old US couple married for 75 years, die a day apart

A long-time couple, who had celebrated their 75th anniversary in 2013, from Long Beach, LA, died within a day of each other. They were 94.

Helen died on July 16, while the love of her life and her hubby, Les Brown, died the next day, July 17, Presstelegram.com reported.

The duo’s friends and family asserted that if two people ever were made for each other, then it was Helen and Les.

The two of hem had been born on the same day, Dec. 31, 1918 and were high school sweethearts.

Telangana state issue: Andhra ministers, lawmakers meet PM

Mministers and Members of Parliament from the Andhra and Rayalaseema regions met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday and reportedly expressed their opposition to any move to create a separate state of Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh.

Union Ministers M M Pallam Raju, K S Rao, Chiranjeevi and D Purandeshwari were among those who met Prime Minister Singh.

Members of Parliament Bapiraju and Anantarami Reddy were also part of the United Andhra delegation that called on the Prime Minister, who gave them a patient hearing.

A Chinese couple, who were having a heated argument on a street in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, realized the best way to cool it all down was to take off their clothes.

A passerby revealed that the couple started to quarrel on the roadside, and then shifted to the middle of the busy street. The man then started to shed his clothes, followed by his girlfriend, the New York Daily News reported.

Later, they were spotted hugging and walking away together. (ANI)

Minister asks students to utilise supplementary counselling

Students, including those who cleared the Plus Two special supplementary exam, could utilise the supplementary counselling for admission to engineering courses to be conducted by the Anna University, state Higher Education Minister P.Palaniyappan today said.

Students who had applied but did not appear for the general counselling which ended yesterday due to personal reasons could also apply for the supplementary counselling, he told reporters here.

At the end of the single window general counselling yesterday, over 77,000 engineering seats under government
quota remained unfilled.

Shamli gangrape: Victim was blackmailed by 2 of the accused

The 21-year-old victim of the Shamli gangrape incident has disclosed that she is three- months pregnant after repeatedly being raped over a period of time by two of her friends, who are among the six accused in the case.

In a second statement recorded before police, the victim said that Irshad and Anis, two of the accused were known to her before.

She alleged that they had earlier raped her and made a video of the act. They had then used the video to blackmail
and coerce her and repeatedly rape her for three months, as a result of which she became pregnant, police said.

Multiple murder suspect held in China

Chinese police today arrested a 38-year-old man who had allegedly stabbed five people to death and injured three others in central Henan Province.

The suspect, Ding Jinhua, was arrested from Yuzhou City, police said, adding that he was being interrogated.

Ding, who runs a furniture shop in Henan, went on a stabbing spree yesterday after a minor local dispute,
state-run news agency Xinhua said.

He stabbed three people to death in Dazhuzhuang Village and later drove back to the furniture market where he killed a businesswoman.

16-yr girl raped in Haryana

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth at Singhana village here, police said today.

Ramesh, a resident of Singhana village, forcibly took the girl to a secluded location and raped her last night, they said.

A case has been registered and a manhunt launched to arrested the accused at the earliest, according to police.

Serial sexter busted for stalking singer Ashanti

Devar Hurd has been busted again for sending singer Ashanti more than 100 ‘sexually explicit’ tweets.

He was previously jailed in 2010 for sending pictures of his private parts via her mom.

The man obsessed with the singer was indicted on charges he has kept up his lurid bid to woo the Grammy Award winner.

The prosecutor revealed that the serial sexter had started sending the explicit images to Ashanti and her family members soon after he got out of prison in November 2010, the New York Daily News reported.

Rihanna hit with 30K-pound fine for not showing up in own court case

Rihanna has been slapped with a fine of 30,000 pounds, after she failed to appear in court in an ongoing lawsuit.

The ‘Rude Boy’ hit maker had sued her former accountants for allegedly handling her finances poorly, claiming that the firm owes her millions, the Sun reported.

However, the move backfired when she missed various court hearings, and got hit by the five-figure fine.

According to the accountants, Berdon LLP, the star’s consistent absence from the court has cost them thousands in legal fees.
