N Korea blasts South Korean leader’s nuclear comments

North Korea today slammed South Korean President Park Geun-Hye for “hurting its dignity” with her call for denuclearisation and said its atomic weapons could never be a bargaining chip.

“Park Geun-Hye let loose a whole string of provocative remarks seriously hurting the dignity and social system in the DPRK (North Korea) while visiting China,” the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said in a statement through state media.

Immigration bill will pass: US treasury secy

US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said that he was confident that immigration reform would be adopted, despite strong opposition from some Republicans.

Last week the US Senate passed a controversial immigration bill that would give a path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants, and the legislation is now under debate in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

Conservatives have criticised the Senate version of the overhaul and have vowed any House version would need to have significant differences.

Nuclear theft rife: UN atomic agency chief

The head of the UN nuclear agency said that well over 100 cases of nuclear theft and related incidents are reported to his agency each year but many more may go undetected.

“We cannot be sure if such cases are just the tip of the iceberg,” said Yukiya Amano, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Amano spoke on Monday at the start of an IAEA conference on nuclear security attended by government ministers and other senior officials from more than 100 countries.

Chinese lantern sparks huge fire at British recycling plant

More than 200 firefighters were on Monday battling a major blaze at a recycling plant in Britain after a falling Chinese lantern set 100,000 tonnes of paper and plastic alight.

Ten firefighters suffered minor injuries as they fought to put out the flames at the plant in Smethwick, just outside Britain’s second city Birmingham in central England, the local fire department said.

The fire sent a massive plume of smoke rising 1,800 metres into the sky which could be seen for miles around.

Don’t play politics over Uttarakhand: Maken

Congress general secretary Ajay Maken Monday said his party is helping in the relief and rehabilitation efforts in flood-ravaged Uttarakhand and all should rise above partisan politics and serve the affected people.

Addressing reporters here, Maken said thousands of people have been left homeless and their houses uprooted. “We should rise above partisan politics and serve the people,” he said.

He said the temple town of Kedarnath has been fully evacuated and the remainder of pilgrims in Badrinath would also be evacuated if the weather permits.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir sought response from the Centre on a PIL seeking its direction to introduce updated National Ambient Air Quality Standards in tune with Europe and USA and in consonance with EURO V.

CBI may not file charge sheet by July 3 New Delhi: In the absence of sanction for prosecution against a Railway board member, CBI’s charge sheet in the railway bribery scam, which cost Congress MP Pawan Kumar Bansal his job as Railway Minister, may not be filed within stipulated time till July 3.

This may pave way for automatic bail for the 10 accused arrested in the case in the absence of the charge sheet within mandatory period of 60 days from the day of the arrest.

The Indian Embassy in the US is among the list of 38 diplomatic missions which were being spied upon by American intelligence agencies, as per the latest top secret US National Security Agency documents leaked by the whistleblower Edward Snowden.

No age limit for vehicle to play on road: Centre to SC

Vehicles can ply on the roads irrespective of their age if they satisfy prescribed norms and standards, the Centre today told the Supreme Court.

“Even though, the central government is empowered to fix the age limit of vehicles under Section 59 of the Motor Vehicle Act, no policy decision fixing age limit of the vehicles has been taken by the Centre,” the Centre told a bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir.

Gujarat model is an exaggeration: Chidambaram

The much-touted Gujarat model of development is “flawed” and “a bit of an exaggeration”, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said on Monday, affirming that this model would not work for the whole country.

The petitions of RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav to transfer one of his fodder scam cases to another special CBI court from the present court of Pravas Kumar Singh and examining one more witness were dismissed by Jharkhand High Court Monday.

The court of R R Prasad, who had on June 28 reserved the order on the pleas after Ram Jethmalani argued for Yadav, dismissed the petitions.

Oil industry wants roadmap for free pricing

Pakistan: Quetta shuts down to mourn attack of 30 Shi’a Muslims

The death toll in the Quetta suicide bombing reached 30 on Monday morning as two of the injured persons succumbed to their injuries in the Combined Military Hospital.
Earlier on Sunday night, at least 28 men and women of Shia Hazara community were killed and 60 others injured in a suicide blast in the Aliabad area of Hazara town.

Shehzada Farhat, a senior government official, told Dawn.com that the condition of some the injured persons was still serious. The wounded were being treated at the army run CMH.

1790 Palestinians kidnapped, 16 killed, in first half of 2013′

The Ahrar Center for Detainees Studies and Human Rights have reported that Israeli soldiers kidnapped 1790 Palestinians in the first six months of this year, including 300 who were kidnapped in June, and added that 16 Palestinians have also been shot and killed by Israeli military fire in six months.
The Ahrar Center said that dozens of women, children, elderly, legislators, intellectuals and journalists were among the kidnapped.

Separatist shutdown over killings affects life in Valley

Life across the Kashmir Valley was affected Monday by a separatist shutdown called to protest the alleged killing of two people by security forces in north Kashmir’s Bandipora a day ago.

Educational institutions, markets, other businesses and public transport remained suspended in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley because of the shutdown.

Private transporters are running skeletal services on city roads and in some other places in the Valley Monday. Government offices, post offices and banks functioned normally, despite the shutdown call.

Unlimited roaming for a fixed fee; rail ticket on SMS starts from today

Free mobile roaming on payment of a fixed fee and booking of rail tickets through SMS, both the decisions taken last week by the government, will be implemented from today.

The most awaited decision of the telecom regulator TRAI to allow free mobile roaming on payment of a fixed fee, which got a green signal last week, will begin from Monday. The decision also said to reduce national roaming charges for others by up to 57 percent.

TRAI, however, said making national roaming completely free of charges is not practical as of now.

Many house cats are getting infected with a lethal form of tuberculosis, which is generally found in cattle and badgers, a new study has revealed.

The study has raised concerns that one in a thousand could be carrying the mycobacteria, a much higher number than what was originally determined, the Daily Express reported.

The exploration-loving felines can catch the disease while roaming the countryside badger setts or while making contact with infected rodents and cattle or contaminated milk.

HC grants bail to Sooraj Pancholi

Celebrity son, Sooraj Pancholi, who was arrested by the police after being found guilty for abetting actress Jiah Khan’s suicide, has been granted bail by the Bombay High Court today.

However, the court has asked Sooraj to surrender his passport thereby barring him to leave the country.

Sooraj’s family had filed a bail application on June 21 before the session’s court, but the plea was rejected after the police informed the court that they wanted to add some more sections to this case.
