India to reduce negative items list to improve Indo-Pak trade relations: Sabharwal

Outgoing Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Sharat Sabharwal has said India has lifted restrictions on investment and negative list was being phased out fast to improve trade relations with Pakistan.

During a farewell call to the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) leadership on Sunday, Sabharwal said India is committed to reduce the list of 600 negative items to 100 with a minor tariff of five percent.

He also said that the list of 100 items will also be removed in five years.

Dec 16 gangrape case: IO denies fabricating evidence

The trial in the December 16 gangrape case today resumed in a Delhi court after the summer vacation with the investigating officer (IO) rejecting the allegation that she had fabricated evidence.

“It is wrong to suggest that all the accused persons were falsely implicated in the present case,” the lady IO, who had initially probed the case, told Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna.

Illegal weapons manufacturing facility busted in MP, nine held

Police today busted an illegal weapons manufacturing facility in Palera town, about 75 kms away from the district headquarters, and arrested nine persons.

They also seized a number of illegally-made weapons, including 315 and 312 bore guns, and tools for making them, SP Amit Singh said.

The factory was raided on a tip-off and its owners, Jagdish Ahirwar, Mukesh Ahirwar and another person, identified
only as Rajjan, were arrested.

Six others were found working at the unit, he said.

Depressed, young film editor ends life

Under pressure to withdraw rape charges against her ex-boyfriend who called off their wedding, a 22-year-old film editor hailing from Delhi allegedly committed suicide at her rented residence at suburban Jogeshwari here, police said today.

According to Oshiwara police, the incident took place last night in 471/Adarsh nagar chawl.

The deceased, Pallavi Jha, was found hanging from the ceiling. During panchnama, the police did not find any suicide note. The body was sent to Cooper hospital for an autopsy, after which a case was registered on Monday afternoon.

Ishrat Jahan case: IB man may not figure in charge sheet

The CBI is unlikely to name Intelligence Bureau (IB) official Rajendra Kumar in its preliminary charge sheet in Ishrat Jahan shootout case to be filed before the Gujarat High Court by July 4 and may seek more time to probe the conspiracy angle, officials said Monday.

The preliminary set of formal charges may focus on those who are alleged to be directly involved in the suspected staged shootout and not on the conspiracy behind it.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director Ranjit Sinha told reporters here Monday the agency will file a preliminary charge sheet by July 4.

18 women rescued from Goa prostitution den

Eighteen women, most of them from northeastern states and Nepal, were rescued after a raid on a Goa night club which doubled up as a prostitution den, police said Monday.

Two people, including a pimp and the night club’s owner Ronnie Chakravarthy, were arrested after the Saturday raid in Calangute, said police inspector Nilesh Rane.

“The victims are mainly from Manipur, Sikkim and Nepal. There was a Goan girl too. They had been hired as waitresses and dancers, but in fact they were used for prostitution,” Rane said.

Diesel to cost 50 paise more per litre

Diesel will become costlier by 50 paise per litre excluding taxes from Monday midnight, the country’s largest oil marketing company Indian Oil Corp (IOC) said.

The company said despite the increase, marketing firms would continue to incur Rs.8.10 loss on sale of each litre of diesel.

Decision on Telangana in final stage: Digvijaya Singh

Debt-ridden mother-son duo commits suicide

A 50-year-old woman and her son ended their lives today at Turkapalli village, about 70 kms from here, over failure to repay debt, police said.

The victims were identified as P Ellavva and her 25-year-old son P Raju, police added.

Police say 4 killed in Swiss helicopter crash

A helicopter has crashed above a popular mountain hostel in the central Swiss Alps, killing all four occupants.

Police in the canton (state) of Uri said the helicopter crashed for unknown reasons in rough terrain above the
Kroenten Hut, which stands 1,903 meters above sea level.

Police, fire and the air rescue service responded, and the Swiss Accident Investigation Board opened an investigation.

The crash comes just two days after another helicopter crash killed four men, including the pilot, in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino in southern Switzerland.

Court rejects plea to make 82 Muslim witnesses accused

A designated court hearing the 2002 Naroda Gaam riot case today rejected the plea of all accused, including former minister Maya Kodnani, seeking that 82 Muslim witnesses be made accused and tried for attacking Hindus.

Designated court judge Jyotsna Yagnik turned down the application on the ground that provisions under section 319 of the CrPC do not provide that witnesses be made accused in the same trial.

Security personnel fighting Maoists will be able to wear comfortable shoes when they march in jungles with the Home Ministry relaxing the rules of putting on hard-sole military boots.

The decision has been taken after the Home Ministry received representations that many paramilitary soldiers were
often having problems in wearing hard-sole leather boots in patrolling while going on offensives against the Naxals.

A Ministry official said all security personnel deployed in Naxal-affected states have been allowed to wear canvas
shoes or any shoe which they feel comfortable.

Man gets 7 year jail in rape case

A local court here today awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment to a man for raping a minor girl in 2012.

The accused, identified as Santosh Savan, had raped the minor after asking her to come to his residence for
collecting fuel wood.

Later, on the complaint of the victim, Savan (30) was arrested and a case of rape was registered against him.

After the trial, the District and Sessions Judge, Durga Dabar, awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment to the
accused.

Two policemen killed in northwest Pakistan

At least two policemen were killed when gunmen ambushed a security check-point in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar, police said.

Four gunmen on two motor-bikes targeted the checkpoint on Ring Road in Pishtakhara area of Peshawar, capital of restive Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, when they were busy checking vehicles, Haroon Khan from the city’s police control office told PTI over phone.

It seems to be a targeted attack and no one took responsibility for it,” Khan said.

Huge cache of arms, ammunition recovered near LoC

Security forces have recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition near the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district of north Kashmir, a defence spokesman said today.

The recovery, which included four Chinese pistols, an AK assault rifle and an Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL),was made during a search operation between the LoC and the fence in Machhal sector yesterday, the spokesman said.

He said 10 AK magazines with 300 rounds, four pistol magazines, 12 UBGL grenades and three Chinese hand grenades

Couple crushed under train

A woman died while trying to save her husband, who was also killed, from being crushed under a moving train at Bawal station here, police said today.

The incident took place yesterday and the couple has been identified as Vikram Bamiki (31) and his wife Shashi Bala (28).

According to police, the mishap took place when Shashi made a bid to save Vikram, who was crossing the rail track
when the Porbander Express was approaching the Rewari station.

Vikram, a resident of Alwar district in Rajasthan, was employed as a Chowkidar in Bawal Community Heath Centre.
