Doctor, wife arrested for torturing domestic help

A doctor and his wife were arrested here Tuesday for assaulting and torturing their domestic help, police said.

The couple were arrested from Metro City in Mahanagar after the 20-year-old domestic help, Lalita, escaped from their house and lodged a complaint with police.

She bore injuries inflicted by a kitchen knife and cigarette burns, police said.

Doctor Ashutosh, his wife Pragati and their servant David had been beating her brutally for the last one month, police said.

The girl’s mother died last year after which her father remarried and threw her out.

Lankan player causes mid-air panic, SLC orders inquiry

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has ordered an inquiry into reports that a member of the country’s A team caused a mid-air panic in an inebriated state while on a British Airways flight.

SLC has not named the cricketer but according to ESPN Cricinfo, the concerned player was 21-year old opening batsman Ramith Rambukwella.

Dec 16 gangrape: Cops want bus owner as witness

Delhi Police Tuesday urged a special court here hearing the Dec 16, 2012, gangrape case to call as witness the owner of the bus in which the 23-year-old woman was brutalised.

Filing an application before Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna, police sought to call as witness Dinesh Yadav, owner of the bus.

Special Public Prosecutor Dayan Krishnan also sought the court’s permission to call Ramadhar, a carpenter, who was allegedly robbed by the accused after they lured him into the bus.

Mercedes to double production capacity at Chakan

Expecting India to be amongst the top ten global markets for it by 2020, German luxury carmaker Mercedes Benz today said it would be doubling its production capacity at the Chakan manufacturing facility near Pune at an
investment of Rs 250 crore.

Dooars clash: GJM leaders granted interim bail

Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung and four of its top leaders have been granted interim bail by a Jalpaiguri court in a case of violence in the Dooars in 2009.

The others, who were granted interim bail, are GJM general secretary Roshan Giri, assistant secretary Binay
Tamang, Gurung’s wife and Nari Morcha leader Asha and Ramesh Alley.

The GJM leaders along with 30,00 supporters are facing charges under various sections of the IPC, including attempt to murder, in connection with the clash on January 16, 2009, with members of Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad.

Muslim prisoners to be exempt from hard labour during Ramzan

Prison authorities in the state have been directed to exempt Muslim prisoners from hard labour during the holy month of Ramzan starting from July 9.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal gave directions to the DGP, Prisons in this regard after state Minorities Commission member Tarsem Ahmed called on him at his residence here this evening, a CMO spokesperson said.

Badal also asked the DGP to issue instructions to all the jail superintendents to ensure that Muslims inmates are
allowed to perform prayers for Ramzan, during which they observe fast.

20 killed in Baghdad blasts: officials

A series of car bombs minutes apart targeting markets across Baghdad killed 20 people today, officials said, the latest in a nationwide surge in attacks sparking fears of a return to all-out conflict.

The blasts struck commercial areas in Dura, Shaab, Shuala and Kamiliyah neighbourhoods at around 6:00 pm (1500 GMT), leaving a further 60 people wounded, security and medical officials said.

One security personal injured in Maoist attack

A special operation group (SOG) jawan was seriously injured after being shot at during an exchange of fire between police and Maoists in a forest in Odisha’s Subarnapur district today, police said.

The exchange of fire ensued during a combing operation in the Patrapalli-Jharbahali forests under Ulunda police
station, about 70 km from here, they said.

Arms including one SLR, four rifles, a hand grenade, a pistol besides other materials being used by the ultras were seized from the spot, DIG (Western Range), Sanjay Kumar said.

British TV channel to air daily ‘azaan’ during Ramadan

One of Britain’s main television channels will air ‘azaan’ or Muslim call to prayer during the holy month of Ramadan.

Channel 4 will become the first mainstream British TV channel to broadcast the call to prayer on a daily basis as
part of a season of programmes around the Muslim period of prayer and fasting, which begins next Tuesday.

The headline-grabbing move will see Channel 4 broadcast the three-minute call to prayer at about 3 am (local time) for 30 days from the start of Ramadan on July 9.

2,000 scholarships for handicapped students announced

The National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (NHFDC) Tuesday announced 2,000 scholarships for handicapped students, an official statement said here.

The corporation, which comes under the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry, will be giving 1,500 scholarships under its trust fund and 500 scholarships under the national fund to students with 40 percent and more disability for pursuing professional courses during the academic year 2013-2014.

A medal-winning woman shot-putter at last month’s 53rd National Interstate Senior Athletics Championship has flunked the dope test, conducted by National Anti Doping Agency (NADA).

Call centre employee found dead in her house in Munirka

A 24-year-old call centre allegedly committed suicide at her residence in south Delhi today, police said.

The incident was reported from Munirka and the deceased has been identified as Shivani who hailed from Haridwar in
Uttarakhand.

A purported suicide note was recovered in which she claimed she was unhappy and that no one was responsible for

5,000 CCTV cameras to be installed at public places in Hyd

Stepping up its security measures, Hyderabad Police will install 5,000 advanced CCTV cameras at all public places and junctions in the city.

The step is being taken under the Safe City project and AP Public Safety (Measures) Enforcement Act-2013.

We intend to install about 5,000 CCTV cameras under the Hyderabad and Cyberabad police commissionerate limits,” Andhra Pradesh DGP V Dinesh Reddy told reporters here today.

Youth feared drowned in Yamuna

A 23-year-old youth was feared drowned in the Yamuna when he had gone to take a bath in the river, police said today.

Police said that the youth, identified as one Deepak from Kohliwada, was swept away by the strong currents in the river in the afternoon yesterday. He had gone to take a bath in the river accompanied by three of his friends.

Although a search was started yesterday itself, nightfall had hampered the efforts, police said. They added that fire brigade officials had taken up the search today which, however, has proved unsuccessful so far.

Court dismisses criminal defamation case against Home Minister

A Delhi court today dismissed a criminal defamation case filed against Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde for his ‘Hindu terror’ remark.

The complaint is dismissed,” Metropolitan Magistrate Amitabh Rawat said, while refusing to give a copy of detailed order to the complainant in the case and directed him to apply for a certified copy.

The court passed the order on the complaint lodged by Ved Parkash Kumar, who had alleged that the home minister had “wilfully” made the “derogatory” remarks to cause “ill will and hatred among communities”.

Saudi extends grace period for illegal workers by 4 months

Government official arrested for accepting bribe

A state government official was arrested today after he was caught accepting bribe to clear a tender for some works in the Keran sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, a spokesman of the State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) said here.

Head Draftsman in Rural Development Department (RDD), Kupwara, Bashir Ahmad Mir, was caught red-handed while accepting bribe from complainant Ghulam Ahmad Malik of Haiyan village in Trehgam, the spokesman said.
