US blacklists Myanmar general over NKorea arms deals

The United States placed a Myanmar general on its sanctions blacklist today for arms deals with North Korea that violated a UN Security Council embargo on buying weapons from Pyongyang.

The US Treasury named Lt General Thein Htay, the head of Myanmar’s Directorate of Defence Industries, for the sanctions, saying he was involved in buying North Korean military goods despite his government’s support of the Security Council ban.

It also said he acted on behalf of the Directorate of Defense Industries, which was already on the US sanctions blacklist for arms deals with North Korea.

Pakistan govt advised to tackle terrorism to revive economy

NSA whistleblower Snowden withdraws application for political asylum in Russia

Former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden aborted his intention to ask for political asylum in Russia, Kremlin said Tuesday.

“He withdrew his application to stay in Russia,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

On Monday, Snowden, acting via his solicitor, handed a refugee application to the Russian authorities in a Moscow airport.

He has been in the transit area of the Sheremetyevo airport for eight days after arriving here from Hong Kong.

Japanese surgeons successfully transplant parts of mum’s lung into 3-year-old son

Part of a mother’s lung has been successfully transplanted into her 3-year-old son in the world’s first middle lobe transfer from a living donor.

According to Okayama University Hospital, the operation made the troubled boy, whose lung function was declining, the youngest lung recipient in Japan, the Japan Times reported.

Lead surgeon, Takahiro Oto, said at a press conference after the operation that the boy’s artificial heart and lung has been removed, and he has begun to breathe with the transplanted lung.

Mopidevi taken to NIMS for back pain

Former minister Mopidevi Venkataramana, who was lodged at the Chanchalaguda Jail, was taken to NIMS hospital after he complained of back pain.

Mopidevi, who was arrested in the Vanpic case related to the Disproportionate Assets case of Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, was rushed to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences from the Chanchalguda Jail after he sought better treatment. He is also suffering from high blood pressure and other health problems.

Pak rejects Afghan government’s claim on Taliban

Pakistan on Tuesday rejected as completely baseless the comments and “ideas” attributed to it by Afghan officials relating to alleged “power-sharing formula” with the Taliban or attempting to “bring fiefdoms to Afghanistan”.

Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Irshad Ahmadi said in Kabul Monday that Pakistan suggested the Afghan government share power with the Taliban as part of the end game, reported Xinhua.

Delhi girl kidnapped, raped by neighbour

A 16-year-old girl was kept hostage by a neighbour for four days in a house here and raped, said police Tuesday. The attacker and one of his friends have been arrested.

The victim, a Class 7 student from Kalyanpuri in east Delhi, was lured away from her home by her neighbour Chandan, 24, and kept hostage at his friend’s house and raped, police said.

“The girl’s parents approached us June 21 saying she was missing,” said a police officer.

Four days later, police rescued the girl from the house of Chandan’s friend, Pramod, which is located a few kilometres from the victim’s house.

UN chief concerned over escalating conflict in Syria

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Tuesday expressed grave concern over the escalating violence in Homs, Syria, renewing his call for a political solution that “remains the only way out of this tragedy”, reported Xinhua.

“The secretary-general calls on the warring sides to do their utmost to avoid civilian casualties and to allow immediate humanitarian access, as well as opportunities for trapped civilians to leave without fear of persecution,” said a statement issued by his spokesperson.
