Osmania varsity Prof held for “harassing” female students

An Assistant Professor of the city-based Osmania University (OU) has been arrested on the charge of harassing female students, police said today.

Shiv Shankar was nabbed two days ago by the sleuths of Central Crime Station, a wing of Hyderabad Police.

He would get friendly with female students and then harass them, a senior police officer said.

Jitendra Jain, alias Jeetu, filed an application before the court requesting it to take action against erring police officials for “mis-using their official powers and recording the false confessional statement under threat and pressure”.

Children in poor countries ‘sexually abused live on web’

The sexual abuse of children in developing countries is increasingly being live-streamed on Internet services such as Skype, Britain’s online child protection agency warned today.

Paedophiles are increasingly targeting poor families abroad, exchanging access to live video images of children in exchange for payment, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) said.

The agency said live-streaming emerged in 2012 as a means of producing and distributing indecent images.

Insurgents unleashed a new wave of attacks today in Iraq, killing at least 53 people, officials said, the latest in a surge in violence across the country that has raised concerns over a return to sectarian bloodshed.

Also, seven militants were killed. There was no claim of responsibility for the attacks, mostly car bombs in Shiite areas.

Outrage in Ukraine over police accused of raping woman

Several hundred protesters stormed a police station in southern Ukraine today after authorities initially failed to arrest one of two policemen implicated in the rape of a young woman.

The outrage prompted Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovych to order a top-level enquiry into the gang rape of 29-year-old Iryna Krashkova.

Residents of Vradiyivka in the southern Mykolayiv region hurled firebombs, bottles and stones as they attacked the police headquarters in the early hours today.

Shots could be heard as police used tear gas against protesters, some of whom were covered in blood.

Indonesia quake kills six children, traps 14, in mosque collapse

An earthquake Tuesday killed six children and left 14 others trapped when a mosque collapsed during a Koran reading session in Indonesia’s Aceh province, bringing the confirmed death toll from the disaster to 11. The strong 6.1-magnitude quake left hundreds more injured as it rocked a region that was devastated by the quake-triggered tsunami of 2004.

The earthquake reduced houses in parts of Aceh to rubble, set off several landslides and badly damaged roads.

Drunk Sri Lankan cricketer tries to open aircraft door midair

Union Minister Beni Prasad Verma on Tuesday kicked up another controversy with his barbs at friend-turned foe Mulayam Singh Yadav, saying that the SP chief was not even fit to sweep the Prime Minister’s residence, drawing instant rebuke from the Congress.

“Yadav wants to become Prime Minister. He should first try to get the job of a sweeper at the residence of the PM,” 77-year Verma said at a programme in Uttar Pradesh’s Faizabad.

Over 3,500 missing in Uttarakhand: NDMA

Over 11,000 people are feared to be still missing in the flash-floods and landslides in Uttarakhand, NDMA Vice-Chairman Shashidhar Reddy said today.

Reddy said as per the official data, the count of missing people has reached only upto 3,500 to 3,700 but more than 11,000 people are feared to be missing in the state.

According to the NDMA’s recent data, rains and floods had affected 4,200 villages in Uttarakhand besides damaging 2,397 houses and 194 bridges.

So far, 580 people have lost their lives and officially 3,500 continue to be missing.

Jiah suicide case: Suraj Pancholi walks out of jail

Three weeks after his arrest in the actress Jiah Khan suicide case, Suraj Pancholi, son of Bollywood actor Aditya Pancholi, was released from prison today after the Bombay High Court granted him bail.

Suraj, granted bail yesterday, walked out of the Arthur Road Jail in central Mumbai at about 5 pm. His family members had been busy since yesterday to complete the bail-related formalities.

Granting relief to Suraj, the HC had observed that the 22-year-old aspiring actor can’t be held solely responsible for the “impulsive” act of his actress-girlfriend.

8-yr-old girl raped, murdered

An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Gandhi Nagar area of Worli in central Mumbai during the wee hours today, police said.

The deceased lived with her family on a footpath, police said.

According to police, the victim’s parents found her missing when they woke up in the morning, after which they started searching for her.

Her body was found 100 ft away from their hut among plants near the footpath at around 6:30 AM, they said.

Locals informed the police who rushed the girl to Nair hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

22 kg of cocaine seized at Rome airport

Police at Rome’s Fiumicino airport arrested three people carrying 22 kg of cocaine as they came in a flight from Brazil.

The drugs are estimated at over five million euros.

A Cypriot and a Ukrainian had hidden the drugs beneath false bottoms in the luggage they checked into the aircraft’s hold.

The third suspect, a Brazilian who said she was on a pilgrimage to Italy, had concealed the narcotics in her hand-luggage.

Traffic cop shoots at mayor, deputy in Italy

A traffic warden in a northern Italian town wounded the local mayor in a gun attack and also injured her deputy.

Cadano al Campo mayor Laura Prati was hit in the abdomen and the arm in the attack at the town hall while deputy mayor Costantino Iametti was injured in the head.

Both officials were rushed to a hospital after the ambush, in which witnesses said the traffic warden used a submachine gun, a sawn-off shotgun or a pump-action shotgun.

The VareseNews website named the traffic warden as 61-year-old Giuseppe Pegoraro, who was earlier suspended from duty for suspected fraud.

Sri Lanka beat India by a huge margin of 161 runs in the third ODI of the Celkon tri-nation series at the Sabina Park here Tuesday.

India, chasing a huge target of 349, were bowled out for 187 in 44.5 overs after Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten on 49 and Suresh Raina struck 33.

Pakistan rejects Afghan government’s claim on Taliban

Pakistan Tuesday rejected as completely baseless the comments and “ideas” attributed to it by Afghan officials relating to alleged “power-sharing formula” with the Taliban or attempting to “bring fiefdoms to Afghanistan”.

Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Irshad Ahmadi said in Kabul Monday that Pakistan suggested the Afghan government share power with the Taliban as part of the end game, reported Xinhua.

Ahmadi claimed that Pakistan’s security adviser Sartaj Aziz floated the proposal in his meeting with Afghan Ambassador Umer Daudzai in Islamabad Friday.

The ‘dhak dhak’ girl, who got married in 1999 to a US-based surgeon, had acted in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Devdas’ in 2002 before taking a break and made a comeback in Aditya Chopra’s home production ‘Aaja Nachle’ in 2007.
