Three killed in Maharashtra building collapse

Three people were killed and 24 injured early Thursday when a two-storey building collapsed in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi town, police said.

Building No.14 at Arihant Complex in Narpoli area came crashing down around 1.15 a.m. Thursday, said investigating officer Ramesh Patil of Narpoli police station.

Around two dozen people managed to escape, while 15 others were rescued and admitted to various hospitals for treatment, Patil added.

Hidden microphone found in Ecuador’s embassy in UK

Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino has reportedly discovered a hidden microphone from the Ecuador’s London embassy where WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been holed up for almost a year.

According to the Guardian, Patino discovered the interception device inside the office of Ecuadorean Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Ana Alban, during his visit to the embassy to meet with British Foreign Secretary William Hague to discuss Assange on June 16.

BJP should be worried about lawlessness in Gujarat: Kapil Sibal

Union minister Kapil Sibal on Thursday attacked BJP for its charge that Congress was misusing CBI in the Ishrat Jahan case. He said that the Opposition party instead should be asked how its government in Gujarat was misusing the state police by taking “innocent lives”.

The Law minister also said the CBI was not investigating the encounter case at the instance of the Centre but it was being monitored by court.

A Delhi court on Thursday took cognisance of CBI’s charge sheet filed in railway bribery case. It is against suspended Railway Board Member Mahesh Kumar, Vijay Singla, nephew of former Railway Minister P k Bansal, and 8 others in the Rs 10 crores cash-for-post railway bribery case.

Special CBI Judge Swarana Kanta Sharma took cognisance of the charge sheet and supplied the copies and documents annexed to the final report to the eight arrested accused.

India pitches for conciliatory dialogue in Egypt

Asking all political forces to abjure violence and exercise restraint, India on Thursday strongly pitched for a conciliatory dialogue to address the present situation in Egypt. The Egypt on Wednesday witnessed the ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi by that country’s Army.

Spokesperson in the External Affairs Ministry also said Indian mission in Cairo was in active and regular contact with all sections of the Indian community with the objective of ensuring their welfare. There are 3000 Indian nationals and about 50 Indian companies in Egypt.

BJP has double standards over CBI, alleges Digvijay

Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh on Thursday accused the BJP of maintaining double standards as far as the CBI was concerned.

“When the CBI acts against a Congress leader, the BJP is happy but when the agency acts in the Ishrat Jahan case, it starts talking of independent inquiries and politicisation of the CBI,” Digvijay told reporters.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) yesterday charge sheeted seven Gujarat police officers in the 2004 case where Ishrat Jahan and three others were killed, terming the encounter as “fake” and in “cold blood.”

UN welcomes India’s food security ordinance

The UN Thursday welcomed the Indian government’s food security ordinance, saying it showed that the issue of hunger was being taken “seriously”.

“By legislating food security, the Indian government is making a commitment to the people. It is a sign that the issue is being taken seriously,” UN special rapporteur on food Olivier De Schutter said at a press conference here.

“What makes me hopeful is that we have willingness to make a firm commitment to the issue of hunger,” he said.

Guilty should be punished: Shinde on Ishrat Jahan case

A day after CBI told a court in Ahmedabad that it is probing the role of IB officers in Ishrat Jahan case, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde today said those guilty of carrying out the alleged fake encounter should be punished.

“Facts are facts. Guilty should be punished,” Shinde told PTI when asked to comment on CBI’s submission to the court.

Shinde’s statement bears significance as Home Ministry officials have been maintaining that there was not enough evidence against Intelligence Bureau Special Director Rajendra Kumar and three others in the alleged fake encounter case.

Misbah, Hafeez to own responsibility for team’s showing

RBI will try to reduce rupee volatility

The Reserve Bank of India does not have any target for rupee level but will use all the instruments it has to reduce volatility, RBI Governor D. Subbarao said Thursday.

He also said the bank’s monetary policy transmission is not agile as the commercial banks are reluctant to pass on the benefit of interest rate reduction to borrowers and not all applicants will get a banking licence.

Speaking to reporters here after attending the bank’s board meeting, Subbarao said the bank has no exchange rate target but would use all the instruments it has to reduce the Indian rupee’s volatility.

Former Maoist leader Ganti Prasadam shot at, critically injured

Former Maoist leader Ganti Prasada Rao alias Prasadam, who was released in 2011 in exchange for the kidnapped collector of Odisha’s Malkangiri, was critically injured in an assassination attempt in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore town Thursday, police said.

Prasadam, a poet and convenor of the Martyr’s Committee of Friends and Relatives (a group representing kin of Maoists killed in shoot-outs with police), was attacked by three unidentified people near government-run hospital in Nellore.

The assailants fired at him and also attacked him with a knife.

Pak chief selector Iqbal Qasim quits

Pakistan’s chief cricket selector Iqbal Qasim has resigned, saying his tenure has ended, and insisting that he had no differences over selection with either skipper Misbahul Haq or coach Dav Whatmore.

The former Pakistan left-arm spinner apparently informed the acting chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Najam Sethi, and CEO Subhan Ahmed about the decision to quit soon after the selection Wednesday of the Pakistan team for the tour of the West Indies, Pakistan media reported.

Five security personnel killed in Pakistan

At least five security personnel were killed Thursday when a checkpost was attacked by a suicide bomber in Pakistan’s northwest North Waziristan province, Urdu TV channel Geo reported.

Gunfire was heard after the blast, Xinhua reported.

An explosive-laden car rammed into the checkpost in Datta Khel area, 14 km from North Waziristan’s capital town Miransha. Eight other security personnel were injured in the attack.

On Wednesday, US drones fired four missiles at a house and a vehicle near Miranshah, killing at least 17 suspected militants including a Haqqani network commander.

JD-U targets BJP over Ishrat Jahan

The Janata Dal-United (JD-U) Thursday targeted friend-turned-foe BJP over Ishrat Jahan, who hailed from Bihar, after the CBI said she was killed in cold blood by Gujarat Police.

Nine years after Ishrat Jahan was gunned down in an alleged shootout, the Central Bureau of Investigation Wednesday filed a chargesheet in a court naming at least six policemen as accused.

“Ishrat Jahan was a daughter of Bihar and she was killed in Gujarat. What crime did she committ? Why are BJP leaders in Bihar silent over the killing?” asked JD-U spokesperson Neeraj Kumar.
