YouTube ban to stay in Pakistan

A Pakistani court today refused to issue an interim order to restore the services of banned video-sharing website, YouTube, in the country.

Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah of Lahore High Court sought suggestions from experts of Ministry of Information Technology about “removing blasphemous and undesirable material” from YouTube and other websites for July 25.

Shah was hearing a petition filed by NGO – Bytes for All – for lifting the ban.

A revolutionary solar-powered plane is about to end a slow, symbolic journey across America by quietly buzzing the Statue of Liberty and landing in a city whose buildings often obscure the sun.

The Solar Impulse leaves from Washington on a journey planned for Saturday, depending on the weather. It will take hours for the journey top speed is 73 kph and there are none of the most basic comforts of flying.

Suicide bomber in Iraq kills 2 police, wounds 19

An Iraqi official says a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden car into police patrolling a city north of the Iraqi capital, killing 2 police.

Shalal Abdool, mayor of Tuz Khormato, says four police and 15 civilians were also wounded in the attack, 210 kilometers (130 miles) north of Baghdad.

Iraq has been experiencing one of its deadliest waves of violence in recent years, raising fears that the country is heading toward a new round of sectarian conflict like that which pushed it to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007.

Syria’s Assad boasts opponents failed to oust him

Syrian President Bashar Assad said in an interview published Thursday that his government had fended off everything his enemies had thrown at him and that the only remaining threat to his rule was a far-off and improbable foreign intervention.

In comments to the state-run Al-Thawra newspaper, Assad rejected the idea that what has transpired in Syria for more than two years is a revolution. Instead, he reiterated his past claims that it is a conspiracy by Western and some Arab states to destabilize his country.

Woman arrested for thrashing civil hospital doctor

A lady doctor at a civil hospital here was allegedly thrashed by an attendant of a patient today, police said.

Following the incident, all the doctors and paramedical staff of the hospital went on strike for two hours, but later rejoined work after police registered a case and arrested the woman, Daljeet Kaur, who assaulted the doctor.

Dr Anju Bala and Daljeet, who was attending a patient in the gynaecology ward, got into a spat when the doctor asked all the attendants to vacate the ward.

Animal slaughter fuels protest

Residents of the district’s Kotwalpur and Jawli villages today held a strong protest against alleged incidents of cow slaughter in the jungles in their area.

According to police sources, villagers erupted in protests following the discovery of tell-tale signs of cow slaughter in the jungles near Kotwalpur in the morning.

Later, reports emerged of similar remains having been found in the jungles near Jawli.

Weapons were given to Gujarat police by SIB: CBI chargesheet

The weapons used in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case were provided to the Gujarat police by the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB), the first chargesheet filed on Wednesday by CBI in a special court here said.

“Girish Singhal, who was the first IPS officer to be arrested in the case, went to the SIB on instructions from D G Vanzara and collected the weapons,” the chargesheet, filed yesterday in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate H S Khutwad, said.

Muslim bodies demand change in panchayat poll time

Muslim organisations today urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and State Election Commissioner Mira Pandey to advance the election time of panchayat polls by at least an hour in view of Ramzan.

They also demanded that the state government and SEC take up the issue with the Supreme Court and change the polling date of July 19, a Friday, to either a day before or a day after as some religious formalities and special prayers were to be conducted on Friday.

Dalit boy found dead; Tension returns to Dharmapuri village

A Dalit boy, whose marriage to a caste Hindu girl triggered anti-Dalit violence in three villages of the district in November last, was found dead along a railway track here today, a day after his wife said she would never go back to him.

The body of E Elavarasan of Natham colony in Naickenkottai was found along the railway track behind the government arts college here this morning, police said.

The death of Elavarasan triggered tension in Naickenkottai with Dalit residents of the village thronging Government Medical College hospital where his body has been kept.

Rana told cops he planned terror act, No evidence that Modi

Bookies had toyed with the idea of approaching a senior Australian cricketer for spot-fixing before IPL-5 but later dropped the plan after Ajit Chandila said he is a “big player” and it would be “difficult” to approach him, Delhi Police said today.

Advani and Modi sat side by side during the three-hour meeting of the Parliamentary Board, the highest decision-making body of BJP, and subsequent meeting of its members with party general secretaries.

Woman allegedly gangraped by colleagues

A middle-aged woman was allegedly gangraped by two of her colleagues after they drugged her by lacing her drink with sedatives.

The woman, a resident of Madhu Vihar area in East Delhi, told police that her colleagues Ravindra and Lokendra raped her while Rakesh and Jai Singh were with them. All four of them work with her in a private company in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddha Nagar.

Underworld don Chhota Shakeel ordered me to kill Abu Salem, says assailant

City police probing the assassination attempt on Abu Salem claimed today that arrested gunman Devendra Jagtap was ordered to kill the extradited gangster in the last week of April by Chhota Shakeel, a close aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

During the probe, Jagtap confessed to the police that he had spoken to Chhota Shakeel from inside Taloja Central
Jail at least twice, using two mobile phones secretly given to him by his associate Manoj Lahamane, who is also currently behind bars in connection with the same case, the police said.

Gujarat crime branch had fired 70 rounds at Ishrat Jahan, others

Gujarat Crime Branch officials had fired 70 rounds using their automatic and semi-automatic weapons at Ishrat Jahan and three others during the alleged fake encounter nine years ago.

In an attempt to give the encounter credibility, Crime Branch Commando Mohan Kalasawa allegedly fired from AK-56 automatic assault rifle, which was said to be provided by subsidiary intelligence bureau–an unit of Intelligence Bureu, at the official Gypsy of police, CBI sources said, adding these details have been included in their charge sheet.

Post 26/11 attacks, Coast Guard team visits Pak for first time

For the first time after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, an Indian Coast Guard team visited Pakistan earlier this week to discuss the issues of fishermen languishing in jails and coordination between the two maritime forces.

During the two-day visit from June 30, the Coast Guard team led by its Director General Vice Admiral Anurag Thapliyal held talks with Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (MSA) chief Rear Admiral Waseem Akram in Karachi, Defence Ministry sources told PTI here.

Muslim Brotherhood failed to keep trust: Iranian lawmaker

The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt failed to keep the trust which was bestowed upon them through Egyptians’ vote, a senior Iranian lawmaker said Thursday.

“What happened in Egypt was actually a soft coup staged by the Egyptian army, which was unfortunately the result of repeated mistakes by the ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi and Muslim Brotherhood,” Xinhua reported citing Alaeddin Boroujerdi, chairman of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission.

Gurgaon pub manager held for prostitution

A Gurgaon pub manager was arrested here for prostitution and gambling, police said Thursday.

Rakesh Bhandari, the manager of the pub at Omaxe Mall on Sohna Road, was arrested Wednesday night from sector 17 after he managed to give a slip to a team that raided the premises June 5, police said.

Six women allegedly involved in prostitution and 22 gamblers were arrested during the raid, police said.

Bhandari was presented before a court which sent him to police custody for a day, a police official said.

Ishrat case: cops who spilled the beans likely to be let off

CBI, which submitted its first chargesheet in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, has not named ten police officers who might have spilled the beans about the offence and are likely to be let off.

“In this chargesheet we have not included ten of those accused who were named in our FIR, and soon we would be submitting a report under section 169 of the Criminal Procedure Code with regard to them,” CBI lawyer Ejaz Khan had said while submitting the charge-sheet before the court here yesterday.

Hit by Nitaqat, Indians in Saudi Arabia regularising stay

As 92,000 Indians in Saudi Arabia have been given Emergency Certificates to enable them return home over the kingdom’s Nitaqat work policy, very few of them are actually leaving. Most are using an extended grace period announced by Saudi Arabia to regularize their stay and switch jobs.

According to Indian Ambassador Hamid Ali Rao, the new grace period ends Nov 3 after which the kingdom would become very strict in implementing the Nitaqat. Those overstaying or on invalid work permits would face arrest, huge fines and deportation with a ban on their return.

Delhi woman gangraped by office colleagues

A 40-year-old woman was gangraped here by two office colleagues who, along with their two other associates, took her in a car and offered her a cold drink laced with a sedative before the sexual assault, police said Thursday.

The woman was rescued from east Delhi’s Dilshad Garden area Wednesday night in an unconscious condition, police said.

“She told us four of her office colleagues took her in a car Wednesday night. On the way, they offered her a cold drink laced with a sedative. When she became drowsy, two of them raped her at a secluded place,” said a police officer.

Lightning kills five in Uttar Pradesh

Five people, including two children, were killed after being hit by lightning in Uttar Pradesh late Wednesday, police said.

The lightning struck at three different places while rains lashed parts of the state.

Police officials said the first incident took place in Mechkurahi village in Faizabad district where lightning struck Maqbool Ahmad (50) and Ram Bali (25) while they were sitting in the courtyard of a house. Both were killed instantly.
