Freebies promised by political parties in their election manifestos shake the roots of free and fair polls, the Supreme Court today said and directed the Election Commission to frame guidelines for regulating contents of manifestos.

A bench of justices P Sathasivam and Ranjan Gogoi said though the election manifesto is published before the code of conduct comes into force, the Commission can make an exception by bringing its within code of conduct.

Scientists have developed a new blood test that deciphers gene activity and predicts an individual’s response to aspirin, says a study.

The new gene expression profile not only measures the effectiveness of aspirin, but also serves as a strong predictor of patients who are at risk for heart attack, according to a study posted Wednesday in the online edition of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, reports Science Daily.

More courts to deal with women, children cases: CJI-designate

In a bid to clear the huge backlog of cases, the Chief Justice of India-designate Justice P Sathasivam plans to put in place special courts, to deal with cases relating to offences against women, children and compensation claims.

“The cases pertaining to offences against women and children will be given priority and more special courts should be set up across the country to deal with them,” says the judge, who will take over as the 40th CJI on July 19.

Security forces surround 250 Maoists in Jharkhand

In a massive operation against the Maoists, security forces have laid siege to a hill in Jharkhand, entrapping nearly 250 guerrillas by cutting their supply lines, police said here Friday.

The ‘Jaal Char’ operation has been jointly launched by the state police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Latehar district, around 145 km from the state capital Ranchi.

Islamabad HC tells PCB to hold elections within 3 months

The Pakistan cricket establishment is all set for sweeping changes after the Islamabad High Court directed the PCB’s interim Chairman Najam Sethi to hold fresh elections in the next 90 days.

The court had suspended Zaka Ashraf as Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board last month after constitutional writ petitions were filed in the court against his election.

The court had ordered the inter provincial coordination ministry to appoint an interim Chairman to look after the Board affairs and attend the ICC annual meetings in London.

Father, sons sentenced to life imprisonment in murder case

A father and his four sons have been awarded life imprisonment by a local court here for murdering a farmer last year.

Additional District Judge Masood Ali Siddiqui awarded life sentence to Hariram Singh and his sons — Than Singh, Munendra, Rajiv and Devpal — for killing farmer Tikam Singh on March 12, 2012, in Karrgaon village in Vazirganj area.

The FIR was registered in the matter on March 13, 2012 by victim’s son Kunwarpal.

The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on each of the accused.

24 Indian fishermen released by Lanka

Twenty-four fishermen, who were arrested by Sri Lankan naval personnel on June 5 when they were fishing near Katchathivu islet, arrived here today after a court in the island nation ordered their release.

Coast Guard officials, who received them at the International Maritime Boundary line, later handed them over to Indian authorities, officials said.

The fishermen arrived here along with their five boats.

The court in Mannar ordered their release on July 3, officials said.

Child dies of measles, 20 others affected

A four-year-old girl died due to measles and over 20 children were suffering from the disease at a village in Odisha’s Ganjam district, officials said today.

The disease was reported from Dasiarampalli village under Purushootampur block, Chief District Medical Officer P K Kar said here.

While ten children suffering from the disease were admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here last evening, others were undergoing treatment at nearby hospitals, the CDMO said.

The children aged between one-and-half years to seven years were afflicted by the air-borne disease, he said.

A 1,400-piece silver-gilt dinner set commissioned by the former Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh has fetched a whopping 1.96 million pounds, setting a world record for an English dinner service sold at auction.

The price paid for the Maharaja’s banqueting service, used almost a century ago, is almost double its pre-sale estimate.

The set was purchased by an anonymous collector, Christie’s auction house in London said.

The opening bid was pegged at 1.3 million pounds, and its estimated value was between 1 million – 1.5 million pounds.

AFI plan for swift return of dope-tainted Ashwini nixed

Athletics Federation of India’s plan to include dope-tainted Ashwini Akkunji in the women’s 4x400m relay team in the ongoing Asian Championships here was today nixed by the competition technical delegate on the ground that it would violate IAAF rules.

Plans were afoot to draft Akkunji, whose two-year ban for a doping offence committed in 2011 ended on Wednesday, into the women’s 4x400m relay team to raise hopes of a gold medal in the event.

An AFI top official had, however, denied yesterday that there was any plan to include Akkunji in the women’s 4x400m relay team.

Govt confident Prez will sign Ordinance

Government today expressed confidence that the President will sign the ordinance on food security programme.

Addressing the press conference at the AICC, Food Minister K V Thomas said, “We are now waiting for the official communication from the Rashtrapati Bhavan.”

He said that the government was confident that President Pranab Mukherjee will sign the ordinance.

The ordinance on food security aims to provide highly subsidised foodgrains to 67 per cent of the country’s population at Rs 1-3 per kg.

Defence Minister A K Antony bereaved

Sister Infant Teresa, eldest sister of Defence Minister A K Antony, passed away at a private hospital here due to kidney failure.

Sister Teresa (80) died last night. She was admitted to the hospital here on July 2 and was undergoing treatment for kidney failure, hospital sources said.

She was one of the senior most nuns of St Joseph’s convent at Pattanakad near Cherthala in Alappuzha district. She was Provincial Superior of the Franciscan Clarist Congregation’s Ernakulam province for several years.

62 third-genders seek to contest Nepal polls

Ahead of the Nepal elections, as many as 62 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTI) have announced that they will contest for their rights and privileges in the upcoming polls.

Under the aegis of Blue Diamond Society, a pioneer and leading organisation for LGBTI’s rights in Nepal, 28 lesbians, 21 gays, 12 transgenders and intersexes announced their candidacy in their respective constituencies in 31 districts.

One of these third-genders was Bhumika Shrestha, who said it was to secure an identity in the Nepalese society that she decided to contest elections from Kathmandu.

Pak masseur was sent back from Champions Trophy squad over sexual harassment accusations

A masseur of the Pakistan cricket team was reportedly sent back from the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy 2013 after being accused of sexually harassing a female worker at the London hotel, where the players stayed during the event. According to a source, masseur Malang Ali was sent back with the excuse that his wife was ill in Pakistan, the Daily Times reports. The source said that the hotel management had informed the Pakistani team officials that one of their female workers had lodged a complaint with them that she was sexually harassed by the masseur of the team.
