IPL scam: Mumbai cops net prize catch in bookie master

In a prize catch, Mumbai police Friday netted elusive bookie master Shoban Mehta alias Shoban Kalachowki in connection with the IPL betting and match fixing scam.

According to official sources, Kalachowki was picked up from Goa Thursday by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch and brought to Mumbai Friday.

He will be presented before a magistrate Saturday morning for remand.

Kalachowki was among the absconders for whom the Mumbai and state police were on the lookout ever since the IPL scam broke out May 15 with the arrest of some cricketers and bookies in Mumbai.

Ingredients

All purpose flour (Maida) – 4 tblsp
Sugar – 4 tblsp
Cocoa Powder – 2 tblsp
Egg – 1
Milk – 3 tblsp
Oil – 3 tblsp
Vanilla extract – 2 drops
Microwavable safe mug – 1

Optional Ingredients
Chocolate chips – 2 tblsp
Dry shredded cocunut – 1 tblsp
Carrot (grated) – 1 tblsp

Method
1. Apply cooking spray in the coffee mug so that the cake wont stick.
2. Add flour(maida), sugar and cocoa to the mug and mix well.
3. Add the egg and mix nicely.
4. Pour in milk and oil and mix well. Be careful to mix properly till the bottom.

Congress opposes Rs.7-crore bullet-proof BMWs for Badals

The Congress Friday condemned the purchase of two bullet-proof BMW vehicles by the Punjab government for Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

In a statement here Friday, six Congress legislators said that purchasing these expensive luxury cars for the personal use of the Badals was a mockery of the fund-starved Punjab where the government was unable to even pay salaries to government staff.

Plan to make Bangalore kerosene-free city

The Karnataka government is working on a plan to make Bangalore a “kerosene free” city by offering cooking gas to thousands of poor households as domestic fuel, a minister said Friday.

“We are working out the details of the programme and also talking to the central government on the issue,” Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Dinesh Gundurao told reporters here.

He did not say when the plan is expected to take off.

Apple hires former boss of Yves Saint Laurent

Apple Inc. announced the hiring of the erstwhile CEO of French fashion firm Yves Saint Laurent Paul Deneve as vice president of Special Projects.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Paul Deneve to Apple,” company spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said in a statement. “He’ll be working on special projects as a vice president reporting directly to Tim Cook,” CEO of the California-based tech giant.

Deneve, a sales and marketing manager for Apple in Europe between 1990-97, resigned from YSL Tuesday, saying that he was looking for a new opportunity in the tech sector.

Ingredients
Cooked rice / Old bread pieces/ Old cake pieces- 1 cup
Eggs – 3 (beaten)
Milk – 2 1/2 cups (or use coconut milk)
sugar – 3/4 cup
salt – a pinch (optional)
vanilla essence – 1 tsp
Lemon Zest – 1 tsp (optional)
Raisins – 1/2 cup
Nutmeg powder- 1 tsp
Cinnamon powder – 1 tsp

Rice Pudding

Method
1. Mix all the ingrediants in a large mixing bowl.
2. Pour into a buttered baking dish.
3. Place the baking dish in a big baking pan filled with water.
4. Bake for 45 minutes in the oven preheated to 350 degrees.

Two suicide attacks kill 16 in Afghanistan

At least 16 Afghans were killed and 17 injured Friday as suicide attacks rocked the southern provinces of Kandahar and Uruzgan in Afghanistan.

Twelve people, mostly policemen, were killed and five others sustained injuries in Uruzgan’s provincial capital Trinkot, 370 km south of Kabul, Xinhua reported.

“A man strapped with explosives on his body entered a compound of the highway police and blew himself up,” a police officer said. The attacker was also killed in the blast.

The victims include police personnel and workers.

Minor raped by bus helper in Bikaner

A 16-year-old girl who fled her home after a tiff with her parents was raped by a helper of the bus which she had boarded, police said here Friday.

“People found the girl crying and informed us. She said she was raped the previous night,” a police official said.

He added that the girl, a resident of a nearby village, fought with her parents and left her home.

“She boarded a bus to go to Bikaner. The bus helper let her spend the night in the bus, raped her and fled,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir to build 1,000 MW thermal power project

Jammu and Kashmir has been allotted 130 million tonne of coal block in Odisha which would be used to build a 1,000 MW thermal power project to end electricity woes of the state, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said Friday.

“Jammu and Kashmir has been allotted 130 million tonne of open cast coal mine in Odisha. This will enable us to set up a 1,000 MW thermal power project,” the chief minister posted on micro blogging site twitter.

He, however, said that it has not yet been decided whether the thermal power project would be in Odisha or within Jammu and Kashmir.

SP announces new candidates for five Lok Sabha seats

Samajwadi Party today changed the candidates for five Lok Sabha seats and announced the names of the new ones.

While Mitrasen Yadav has been given the ticket from Faizabad seat in place of Tilakram Verma, Rameshwar Singh Yadav has secured the ticket from Farukhabad in place of Sachin Singh Yadav, party national general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav said in a statement.

In Ambedkar Nagar, Ram Murti Verma has been given the ticket. He replaces Hiralal Yadav. Rajiv Rai has been offered a chance from Ghosi seat in place of Balkishan Chauhan, he said.

Indian doctors’ software distinguishes malaria from dengue

Indian doctors in collaboration with a Russian lab have developed software to differentiate dengue, malaria and other viral fevers, otherwise a challenging task due to their similar symptoms, an official said Friday.

The software, developed by a team of doctors from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) and Lab Tech Ltd in St Petersburg, is expected to aid in faster detection, reduction in cost of treatment and minimisation of antibiotic resistance as only fever-specific antibiotics need to be given to patients.

Pak government ends suspension on execution of prisoners

The newly elected Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) government has ended a suspension on executions, an official told on Thursday.

The Dawn reports that all executions must be approved by the president of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan People”s Party (PPP) suspension on the death penalty, issued in 2008, expired on 30 June.

The interior ministry spokesman, Umer Hameed, said that the new government has decided to deal with all cases of execution on merit.

Polly Truscott, Amnesty International deputy Asia Pacific director, said that it is a ‘shocking and retrograde step’.

President approves food ordinance, opposition cries foul

President Pranab Mukherjee Friday promulgated the national food security ordinance, which gives around 67 percent of India’s 1.2 billion people 5 kg grain per month at highly subsidized rates.

The union cabinet Wednesday approved the ordinance, which gives six months to the states to roll out the right to food law and also to identify the beneficiaries.

Man booked for raping minor

A man was booked today for allegedly raping a minor girl in Wazirabad village in the district, police said.

According to a complaint filed by the seven-year-old victim’s mother, Kirpalpat Singh lured the girl to his agricultural field and raped her, they said.

Later, the girl was admitted to civil hospital here, police said.

A case has been registered against the absconding accused, they added.

Monk held for raping minor

A monk was arrested on the alleged charges of abduction and rape of a minor girl from Dhantala in Nadia district, police said today.

Rabindranath Mondal(48), a resident of Taherpur Rail gate area, abducted a 14-year-old girl from his neighbourhood on Tuesday. Police rescued the girl and arrested the man yesterday.

Mondal’s wife was also arrested for colluding with her husband in the entire incident, they said.

Daughter of a hawker, the victim was sent for medical examination, police said, adding that further probes are on.

Neha Hinge never expected a career in Bollywood

Neha Hinge, who is making her debut in Bollywood with ‘Luv U Soniyo’, says entering the industry was never the plan and it happened by chance.

A software engineer from a small town in Madhya Pradesh, Neha won the Miss International 2010 title and since then life has changed for her.

The 27-year-old will be playing the lead in director Joe Rajan’s ‘Luv U Soniyo’.

“I am a software engineer and doing Bollywood films was never a conscious decision. It all happened by chance and now that I am here I want to explore its depths,” Neha told PTI.

Youth accused of raping minor sister acquitted

A local court today acquitted a youth of charges of sexually abusing his minor sister which forced her to flee to a shelter home, on the way to which she was molested by passengers in a bus, an incident that took place barely two weeks after the December 16 gangrape case.

The story of the girl’s ordeal that she was raped by her elder sibling had unfolded on December 30 last year, when she recorded her statement with the police after being allegedly molested by some passengers in a cluster bus in which she was travelling that night after fleeing from her house.

Minor girl kidnapped, gang-raped in Punjab

A 13-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped in the Sadhanwali Basti area here, police said today.

The minor, while she was on way to a shop in the area, was kidnapped by three car-borne men, who took her to a secluded spot and raped her yesterday, they said.

According to the complaint, Akbar, Aman and an unidentified person, who were in a car, told the girl that her mother was unwell and had immediately called her.

Thereafter, they took the girl to an isolated location and raped her, police said.

Efforts are on to arrest the accused at the earliest, they said.

Minor girl raped by grandfather for four years

A minor girl was allegedly raped for four years by her grandfather here, police said today.

68-year-old Teela Ram, a retired Naib Subedar, was arrested last evening, they said.

“Teela Ram had been raping his 16-year-old grand daughter for the last four years and the matter came to light when the traumatic girl, who had left the house two months ago, was found in Dausa district a couple of days back,” DCP (West) Dr Ravi said here.

Tutor held for molesting student

A private tutor was arrested for allegedly molesting a teen-aged student at his coaching centre in Girish Park area of the city, police said today.

The victim, a student of class X, filed a complaint with the police that she was molested by the teacher after the classes were over yesterday, police said.

On the basis of the complaint, the accused Sukhdeo Singh was arrested last night, they added.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today called on promising all-rounder Parvez Rasool to make the state proud after he became the first cricketer from the valley to be selected in the Indian cricket team for the upcoming ODI tour of Zimbabwe.

Abdullah congratulated Rasool on his selection in the 15-member Indian squad for the five-match ODI series against Zimbabwe.

Supreme Court for guidelines against offer of freebies by political parties

New Delhi, July 05: Free of cost things promised by political parties in their election manifestos make the conduct of free and fair polls impossible, the Supreme Court (SC) said on Friday and directed the Election Commission to frame guidelines for regulating contents of manifestos. P. Sathasivam and Ranjan Gogoi said though the election manifesto is published before the code of conduct comes into force, the Commission can make an exception by bringing its within code of conduct.
