UAE women leaders visit US to discuss women’s empowerment

A delegation of women from the UAE government, business and media recently visited Washington D.C. and New York City and met their peers in the US government to address common challenges in women’s issues.

The women led by Amal Al Qubaisi, first deputy speaker of the UAE Federal National Council, also took part in the annual Executive Board meeting of UN-Women.

During their visit, the Emirati delegation shared their experiences as women leaders working in a variety of sectors, and highlighted the UAE’s initiatives that promote women’s empowerment and equality.

The Lebanese fashion designer Zuhair Murad says actress-singer Jennifer Lopez is his “muse” and he loves everything about her.

Murad has created many stylish outfits for Lopez, which she endorsed on red carpets and even worn them during her “Dance Again” world tour.

Abu Dhabi airport lounge voted best in Middle East

The Al Dhabi lounge at the Abu Dhabi International Airport has been voted the best airport lounge in the Middle East and Africa in the Priority Pass 2013 Lounge of the Year Awards.

Nearly 60,000 Priority Pass members voted for the award, based on lounge quality including refreshments, staff, business facilities and overall ambience.

Now in their ninth year, the awards recognise excellence within Priority Pass’s network of over 600 partner-operated lounges worldwide.

Dannii Minogue walks away from fashion label

Australian singer Dannii Minogue has stepped down from her role at the fashion brand she set up.

The 41-year-old confirmed she will not have any involvement with her Project D fashion company. The news came just weeks after she ended her business partnership with the label’s co-founder, Tabitha Somerset Webb, reports contactmusic.com.

Minogue previously insisted she would be “considering a number of options for the Project D brand moving forward”, but she has now decided to walk away from the company she helped to create.

Morgan likely to coach in IPL-style football tournament

Former East Bengal coach Trevor Morgan may return to India again if he manages to struck a deal with IMG-Reliance for the upcoming IPL-style football tournament early next year.

According to sources close to Morgan, the Englishman who has an expertise in coaching in Indian conditions is keen to come back for a short-term assignment.

“Morgan is showing a keen interest about the upcoming franchisee tournament. He has enquired about it and even had a word with IMG-Reliance a couple of days ago. Taking him on board for the upcoming tournament is just a matter of time,” the source said.

Nicole Scherzinger finds breakup unpleasant

Singer Nicole Scherzinger, who broke up up with Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, feels splits are unpleasant.

Hamilton, 28, and Scherzinger, 35, dated on and off for five years, but they split because they couldn’t spend enough time with each other as the driver is based in Switzerland, while the singer is settled in the US.

Egypt’s interim president dismantles upper house

Egypt’s newly-assigned caretaker president Adli Mansour has dismantled the Shura Council, the country’s upper house of parliament, in his first constitutional declaration, state media reported.

The interim president also issued a presidential decree appointing Mohamed Raafat Shehata as his adviser for security affairs and Mohamed Ahmed Farid as chief of the general intelligence agency, Xinhua said.

On Friday, Mansour appointed Ali Awad Saleh as the president’s constitutional advisor, and Mostafa Hegazy as his political advisor.

India beat Windies to stay alive in tournament

India kept alive their chances of qualifying for the Tri-Nation Series final as they thrashed the West Indies by 102 runs (D/L method) at the Queen’s Park Oval here Friday.

Match-fixing is widespread: Chappell

Convinced that match-fixing is much more widespread than what is already in public domain, former Australian captain Ian Chappell says he uses his commentary to drop subtle hints of wrongdoing whenever he suspects anything fishy during a match.

Chappell, who captained an Australia team described as one of the best in history, said he had altered his cricket commentary in the past to hint at any “dodgy” practice during games.

“I don’t want people to look back at me and say, ‘Well, he was hot on fixing but he didn’t do anything about it’,” Chappell told ‘The Guardian’.

Pope Francis approves canonisation of John Paul II

Late pope John Paul II is set to become a saint later this year as Pope Francis has approved his second miracle.

Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi confirmed that the miracle concerned a Costa Rican woman, who has been named in media reports as Floribeth Mora Diaz.

Diaz claimed she was cured from a seemingly terminal brain aneurysm after she prayed before a shrine to John Paul II in May 2011, reports said.

The Vatican’s “saint-making department” concluded that the only explanation for her recovery was the fact that her family had prayed for the late pope’s intercession.

One-fifth of Syrians lack access to sufficient food

The civil war in Syria is harming the country’s agriculture sector and one-fifth of the population – around four million people – cannot produce or buy enough food, the UN has said.

And impending risks to Syrian crops threaten to worsen food shortages, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) warned in a joint report.

Syrian farmers are short of seeds and fertilisers they need to plant their next crop, and Syria will need to import 1.5 million metric tonnes of wheat for the 2013-14 season.

WHO to set up emergency committee on deadly virus MERS-CoV

The World Health Organisation (WHO) will convene an emergency committee next week on the deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), a top WHO official said.

WHO Assistant Director-General for health security and environment Keiji Fukuda said there was currently no emergency or pandemic, but many things about the disease remained unknown such as the animal reservoir.

A sedentary lifestyle may prolong lifespan, a new study on mice suggests.

Female mice with a high life expectancy are less active and less explorative. They also eat less than their fellow females with a lower life expectancy, researchers said.

The study suggests individuals with a greater life expectancy will express reactive personality traits and will be shy, less active and less explorative than individuals with a lower survival expectation, researchers said.

Adivasi woman complains of attempt to rape near Burdwan

An adivasi woman today complained that unknown persons attempted to rape her at her home at Dangapara near the town here.

In her complaint to the Burdwan police, she said that she was cooking at her home at Ryan gram panchayat when four anti-social elements barged in during a power cut yesterday.

They forcibly took her to the adjoining cowshed and attempted to rape her when she managed to run away, she stated in her complaint.

The woman, a former CPI-M” target=”_blank”>CPI-M member, along with her husband today went to the Burdwan police and lodged a complaint.

‘Nothing politics’, says Ramdev on his meeting Soren

Yoga guru Ramdev today met Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief Shibu Soren at his residence here, but denied any political significance in the meeting.

“Is it wrong to meet our dear ones?” Ramdev asked when enqueried about his visit’s significance in the wake of JMM and Congress talking about government formation.

It was neither spoiling nor improving anything, he said to a question as to whether he had come to be a “spoilt-sport” in the ongoing dialogue between the Congress and the JMM.

Air India plane skids off runway while taxiing

An Air India plane with 140 people on board today skidded off the runway shortly after landing at Bagdogra airport in Darjeeling district, airport sources said.

All passengers and crew members on board are safe and there is no significant damage to the aircraft, an airline official said.

The Delhi-Bagdogra flight 880 landed at 2.15 PM but while taking a turn during taxiing one of its rear wheels veered off the tarmac and was stuck in the soft mud in a field beside the runway, the sources said.

The passengers and crew members have alighted but the plane is still stuck there.

Venezuelan leader offers Snowden ‘humanitarian asylum’

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has offered to give “humanitarian asylum” to US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden, who is waiting in a Moscow airport for a nation to give him sanctuary.

“As head of state of the Boliviarian republic of Venezuela, I have decided to offer humanitarian asylum to the young Snowden … To protect this young man from the persecution launched by the most powerful empire in the world,” Maduro said yesterday at an independence day event.

Former Maoist Ganti Prasadam, who was attacked by unidentified persons here, died while undergoing treatment at a local hospital today.

Prasadam, a former Maoist state committee leader and state secretary of Amara Veeerula Bandhumitrula Sangham, was shot and stabbed by three men near the government hospital at about 2.30 pm yesterday.

Considered to be close to top Maoist leader Ramakrishna alias RK, Prasadam was released from an Odisha jail in 2011 as a part of the deal struck by government with ultras for the release of Malkangiri (Odisha) Collector R V Krishna.

Femen stages topless protest against Turkey PM

A feminist activist from the radical group Femen staged a topless protest at an Istanbul airport today to denounce Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s religious conservatism.

Wearing only mini-shorts and high heels, she performed her stunt inside Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport, on the Asian side of the bi-continental city.

The woman, with the words “Air Dictator” painted in red on her chest, brandished a banner representing a plane ticket that read “Erdogan, from: Istanbul to: Kabul”.

Police arrested her after the brief protest.

Bahrain jails 29 for trying to reach uprising hub

A defence lawyer in Bahrain says 29 protesters have been sentenced to one month in prison for trying to enter a heavily guarded area that was once the center of the Gulf nation’s anti-government uprising.

The court decision comes as some opposition groups, inspired by Egyptian crowds that helped topple President Mohammed Mursi, are calling for stepped-up protests.

Lawyer Mohamed al-Wasti said today the group was convicted of trying to bypass security cordons last year to reach Pearl Square, the hub of protests in early 2011.

Sohrabuddin case: Rajasthan ex-minister gets anticipatory bail

A special CBI court here today granted anticipatory bail to former Rajasthan Home Minister Gulabchand Kataria and three others who were charge sheeted in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter killing case.

Besides Kataria, director of R K Marble, Vimal Patni, Andra Pradesh cadre IPS officer N Balasubraminiam and inspector Shrinivas Rao were also granted pre-arrest bail on the bond of Rs 50,000.

Kataria and others sought anticipatory bail after CBI had filed a charge sheet against them on May 14.

Step up security for Ramzan, Sawan: UP govt to DMs, SSPs

The Uttar Pradesh government has directed district magistrates and police chiefs to take the steps necessary for maintaining peace and order during the coming holy months of ‘Ramzan’ and ‘Sawan’.

District authorities have been asked to maintain utmost vigil and precautionary steps to maintain peace and order in view of Ramzaan beginning July 10 and Sawan from July 23, IG, Law and Order, R K Vishkarma told reporters here today.

The authorities have been asked to identify places that have a history of communal tension and deploy adequate security at such locations, Vishkarma said.

Actress Maria Paul’s friend nabbed in Rs.19 crore fraud

A 22-year-old live-in-partner of South Indian actress Leena Maria Paul was arrested in a Rs.19 crore cheating case, police said Friday.

Sukash Chander Shekhar alias Shekhar Reddy of Bangalore in Karnataka was arrested from a mall in Kolkata, according to police.

Maria Paul has acted in a handful of movies such as “Madras Cafe” and “Red Chillies”. She was arrested May 27 with four bouncers in Delhi by officials of Delhi Police and Chennai police. Shekhar had then escaped.

Dharmana, Sabita Receive Flak: Court Directs To File Counters

The CBI court on Friday rejected the contention of former ministers Dharmana Prasada Rao on the CDs submitted by the agency covering their media conferences. The court directed the two to file their counter to the custody petition of the CBI.

The two former ministers contended that the CDs of their media conferences submitted by the agency to the court were not clear and that they would submit their counters only if the agency submitted original CDs.
The CBI court on examining the CDs said they were proper and directed Dharmana and Sabita to file their counters on July 12.
