Mother tongue in primary education: SC’s const bench to decide

The Supreme Court today said its constitution bench will examine whether government can impose mother tongue or regional language as the medium of instruction at the primary education stage as it has a far- reaching significance on the development of children.

The apex court, which was of the opinion that it was “a fit case for consideration by a larger bench,” said, “the issue involved in this case concerns about the fundamental rights of not only the present generation but also the generations yet to be born.”

Exactly a year after Telugu revenge-drama “Eega” released, its director S.S. Rajamouli is starting to shoot for upcoming period-drama “Baahubali” Saturday in Kurnool.

“The shoot will kick start later in the day in Kurnool. The team plans to shoot for few days there before heading out to other locations,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS.

Rajamouli had earlier tweeted that he would start “Baahubali” on this day. The project has been under-production for nearly a year now.

Married woman alleges rape

A 23-year-old married woman was allegedly raped in Morkhi village of Safidon subdivision here, police said today.

The woman was raped while she was alone in her house yesterday, they said.

The accused identified as Sleem had threatened her of dire consequences if she told about the incident to any one, the woman said in her complaint.

The medical examination of the victim also confirmed that she was raped, police added.

A case of rape has been registered against Sleem, police said here. However, the accused was absconding.

Antony calls for closer military ties between India and China

Calling for closer military ties between India and China, Defence Minister A K Antony today said that it would be easy to maintain peace along the borders if both the forces have trust, mutual respect and confidence.

“If the military leadership on both sides from the top to the ground formations can maintain both trust and mutual respect, and confidence, then it is easy to maintain peace and tranquility at the border areas,” Antony told Political Commissar of National Defence University General Liu Yazhou.

Building under demolition collapses in Delhi, one dead

A four-storey residential building that was being demolished collapsed early Saturday morning in Jafrabad area of northeast Delhi, leaving one person dead and 15 injured, police said.

“The collapse happened at 2.05 a.m. One person died and 15 received minor injuries,” a police official said.

“The victims were labourers. They were engaged in the building’s demolition when it collapsed. Fifteen labourers were rescued from the site, while one man named Furkan died,” the police official added.

Jairam Ramesh points to irregularities in Odisha road projects

Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh pointed out several irregularities in the implementation of road projects in Odisha under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMSY) an official said Saturday.

In a letter to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the union minister said the state has projects worth Rs.5,000 crore under implementation, but only 50 project implementation units with the capacity to handle a workload of only Rs.3,125 crore.

Assaulted by husband, Yukta Mookhey files complaint

Former Miss World and actress Yukta Mookhey has lodged a complaint with the Amboli police station in Mumbai against her husband Prince Tuli after being physically assaulted by him.

She has lodged a complaint of being forced to perfom unnatural sex. She has also alleged that her in-laws too used to harass her for dowry.

A case was registered under Section 498 of the IPC.

Mookhey, who married Tuli on November 2, 2008, has a son from him.

The 35-year-old actress had reportedly filed a complaint of domestic violence in 2012 as well.

Pakistan to raise drone issue with Kerry

Pakistan’s foreign ministry has said that the issue of the US drone attacks will be raised with US Secretary of State John Kerry, scheduled to visit Pakistan later this month.

Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhary, spokesman with the foreign office, said the exact dates and agenda of Kerry’s visit were being finalised by the two countries, Xinhua reported.

He reiterated that the drone strikes constitute a breach of Pakistan’s sovereignty, violation of international law and human rights besides being counter-productive to the fight against terror.

“Exiles, monks and well-wishers are joining the birthday celebrations. Prayers for the well-being and long life of our spiritual leader began,” an official of the Dalai Lama’s office told IANS in Dharamsala, the headquarters of the Tibetan government-in-exile.

Court fines man for calling Italy ‘shit country’

The Supreme Court of Cassation in Italy convicted a pensioner of “contempt for the nation” and fined him 1,000 euros after the man called Italy a “shit country”.

The ruling came after Italy’s paramilitary Carabinieri police force took the 71-year-old man to court for saying “What a shit country Italy is. Why are you wasting time with such crap”, to officers who fined him for driving on a single headlamp.

The court rejected the man’s claim that his words were a rightful expression of free thought.

Muslims have reservations in Panchayat Raj elections

Principal Secretary of Panchayat Raj, Mr.V.Nagireddy issued instructions clarifying that Muslims also have reservations in Panchayat Raj elections. It is expected that the representation of the Muslims would increase. It is the first time that the Muslims are getting reservations in Panchayat Raj elections under BCE category. Earlier Dr.Raju Sharma, the then Principal Secretary had issued a memo on June 2nd,2011 informing commissioner of Panchayat Raj that Muslims have been provided reservations under VCE category and hence there is no need to amend the rules.
