Yahoo! Hack India to be held in Hyderabad

Programmers, developers, designers from across the industry and students from top technical universities in India will gather at Hyderabad for a two-day hacking event.

Over 1,000 developers from across 20 states had signed up to participate in the sixth edition of “Yahoo! Hack India” from July 13, of which 250 best hackers have been selected after an entry-level coding challenge.

“These hackers will now participate in the two-day event which brings forth a series of technical workshops, followed by a nonstop 24-hour coding Hackathon on July 13 and 14,” a statement said.

Women farmers send letter written in blood to Narendra Modi

Women farmers from Junagadh on Sunday sent a letter written in blood to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi urging him to talk to them over the issue of the Jetpur-Somnath national highway, an activist associated with the protest said.

“If you can talk to your brothers in Bihar, why can’t you talk to your sisters in Junagadh,” the women farmers wrote in their letter to Modi.

Facebook executives switch flight, avoid crash

Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and other executives at the social media giant escaped potential disaster when they switched to a United flight returning from a Korean business trip.

They were earlier booked on the Asiana Air flight that crash landed at San Francisco International Airport Saturday morning killing two people and leaving at least 49 critically injured.

“I was on another flight from Korea at the exact same time,” USA Today quoted Sandberg as tweeting. “We are ok. My friend on that flight is ok, too.”

Congress not dependable for formation of Telangana- Prof. Kodandaram

On his return from New Delhi, Prof. Kodandaram, Chairman of Telangana Political Joint Action Committee told that Congress is not dependable for the formation of Telangana. President of A.P. Urdu Medium Govt. degree colleges progressive and coordination committee, Mr. Khan Zia has requested OU authorities and Minister of Higher Education to provide question papers of the recruitment test for the appointment of Asst. Professors in OU service. It may be noted that UGC has authorized OU to conduct APSET which is scheduled to be held on 22nd September 2013. Over 587,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon : UNHCR

The number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon has surpassed 587,000 after an increase of 19,000 in the past week, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

The UN agency pointed out in a report that there were 503,000 registered refugees while more than 84,000 others were still waiting for their registration process to complete, Xinhua reported Saturday.

Serial blasts at Bihar’s Bodh Gaya temple, two injured

At least two Buddhist monks were injured early Sunday in multiple blasts at Bihar’s 1,500-year-old Mahabodhi temple in Bodh Gaya district, police said.

The blasts did not cause any casualty or damage to the temple and the Bodhi tree, under which Buddha attained enlightenment, a police officer told IANS over telephone from Bodh Gaya.

The first blast took place inside the temple compound followed by four more blast. “A live bomb was also found near the temple,” N.H. Khan, a district police officer said.

Ishrat case: court reserves order on cop’s bail till July 9

A special CBI court, hearing the bail application of suspended IPS officer NK Amin in connection with the 2004 “fake encounter” of Ishrat Jahan and three others, today reserved its order till July 9 after completion of arguments by both the sides.

Suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) N K Amin had filed a bail application citing “incomplete charge sheet” through his advocate Ruturaj Nanavati in the special CBI Court here on July 4, a day after the central investigation agency filed its first charge sheet in the case.

15-yr-old girl commits suicide over poor results

A 15-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide here for being unable to score satisfactory marks in her Std X exams, police said today.

According to police sources, the deceased girl was a resident of Jaipur in Rajasthan who was visiting with her sister in the city for her summer holidays.

She was today morning found hanging from the ceiling fan in the room at her sister’s residence where she had retired last night after dinner.

Missing Ranbir today, says Deepika after winning IIFA award

Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone, who won the Star Plus audience jodi of the year award for “Yeh Jawaani hai Deewani” at the 14th IIFA awards here, said that she missed her co-star Ranbir Kapoor who was not present at the awards.

“I miss Ranbir today. Thank you so much, Ayan, for making me look so wonderful in the film. I miss you and I love you,” she said on receiving the awards.

“Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” has been directed by Ayan Mukerji and stars Deepika, Ranbir, Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapur. The film clicked at the box office.

Jet crash-lands at US airport

A Boeing 777 aircraft crash-landed at San Francisco international airport Saturday in the US state of California. There was no immediate word on casualties.

The aircraft, operated by the South Korean airline Asiana, reportedly had 12 crew and 290 passengers on board. It had taken off from Seoul and was on the runway, with plumes of smoke rising from it, BBC reported.

While the sequence of events remained unclear, it appeared the plane landed and then crashed on San Francisco International Airport’s Runway 28, said Laura Brown, the spokeswoman for Federal Aviation Administration.

Petrochemical train explodes in Canada

Around 1,000 people had to be evacuated Saturday after a driverless train carrying light crude oil exploded in a Canadian town, BBC reported.

Some 60 people were missing, but no casualties were confirmed immediately.

The blast sent a fireball and black smoke into the air, destroying dozens of buildings in Lac-Megantic town, some 250 km east of Montreal, a city in Quebec province.

The train’s 77 fuel cars reportedly uncoupled from its parked engine and derailed early Saturday; 120 fire fighters were pressed into service to douse the the blaze.

Two killed, 61 hurt as Korean jet crashes in San Francisco

Two people were reported killed and at least 61 injured as an Asiana Airlines flight from Seoul crashed and caught fire while landing at San Francisco International Airport in California on US West Coast Saturday.

The plane crashed about 11.30 a.m. (12 midnight India time) and came to rest on the side of one of the airport’s four runways, San Francisco Chronicle reported citing Lynn Lunsford, a spokesperson with the Federal Aviation Administration.

UAE-funded school opened in Pakistan

A two-storey school has been opened in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province with the help of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

It was opened under the UAE Project to Assist Pakistan, as part of the UAE’s efforts to boost educational development in the province under directives and initiatives by President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The school consisting eight classrooms, a computer lab and administration facilities, will serve 225 male and female students from primary and preparatory stages.

Delhi woman molested, husband attacked; two arrested

A 25-year-old woman was molested while her husband was attacked by three men here after he objected to their passing lewd remarks about her, police said Saturday. Two of the accused have been arrested.

Accused Babloo and Rajkumar were arrested in connection with the incident that took place Friday night near Talkatora stadium in central Delhi when the couple were travelling in their car, police said. The third accused, Dinesh, is absconding.
