Medical student dies in college, post-mortem confirms murder

A first year MBBS student at a private college in Moradabad died under mysterious circumstances in the campus, with her post-mortem revealing she was strangulated to death, police said on Sunday.

Neeraj Bhadana, a MBBS first year student hailing from Faridabad in Haryana, was found lying on the floor on Saturday.

The girl was admitted to the hospital situated in the college where she died, they said.

The college management had termed it an accidental death, saying that the girl fell from the fifth floor as she was sitting on the railing.

Rain halts relief operations in calamity-hit Uttarakhand

Fresh spell of rains on Sunday halted helicopter operations to ferry rations to remote Uttarakhand districts reeling under shortage of foodgrains even as wet weather put brakes on the task of cremation of bodies in Kedarnath.

The Badrinath highway was also closed for three hours due to incessant rains leaving 500 vehicles, including many carrying relief, stranded. However, the highway was later opened for traffic.

“Chopper operations to drop relief material have been stopped due to rains. Cremation of bodies in Kedarnath also could not be taken up due to rains,” IG Ram Meena said.

Man commits suicide in police custody

A man, who was summoned to a police station in Dhanbad district for questioning in connection with a case or robbery, on Sunday allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself inside its premises, a senior police official said.

Badal Chandra Dey, a resident of Durgapur of West Bengal, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling in the toilet of the police station in Nirsa block, Superintendent of Police Anup T Mathew told reporters in Dhanbad.

16 policemen injured in bus mishap

Altogether 16 policemen on their way to join panchayat poll duty were injured when the bus carrying them hit a tree and overturned near Diana River in Mal area of Jalpaiguri district on Sunday, police said.

Around 35 policemen were coming from Jaigan on Bhutan border to Mal for reporting to be on election duty when the accident occurred.

While 11 injured were admitted to Mal hospital, five were shifted to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital and their condition was stated to serious, police said.

Six Naxals killed in encounter by Maharashtra Police

Six alleged Naxals were killed on Sunday in an encounter with the police.

The encounter took place near the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border.

NIA team arrives in Bodh Gaya to probe serial blasts

An NIA team today arrived in Bodh Gaya to probe the terror attack at the world famous Mahabodhi temple and adjoining areas, a police officer said.

The five-member NIA team comprising a DIG and two SPs reached here by a special plane from New Delhi and drove
straight to the Mahabodhi temple to start investigations, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Gaya Range, Nayyar Hasnain Khan, said.

None of the NIA officials spoke to the waiting media and briskly walked towards the famous Buddhist shrine.

BJP, RJD slam Nitish over terrorist strike in Bodh Gaya

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Sunday said the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar had ignored intelligence reports of possible terrorist strikes in the state.

The allegations came after a series of bomb blasts at the Mahabodhi Temple early Sunday morning in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, left two monks injured and spread panic.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, however, insisted that his administration had not ignored intelligence inputs warning of terrorist attacks.

2 perish in US jet crash, three Indians among 305 survivors

Three Indian nationals were among the 305 survivors of the Asiana Airlines Flight 214 from South Korea that crashed while landing at San Francisco airport, killing two Chinese girls and leaving 49 seriously injured.

Hyderabad on alert after Bodhgaya blasts

Following serial blasts in Bodhgaya Temple in Bihar, the Central Government has sounded alert in all the major cities across the country.

The Union Ministry has put eight cities on alert including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Bangalore and Pune. The Hyderabad City and Cyberabad Police have increased security around religious places, tourist spots, shopping complexes, cinema halls and other commercial areas.

Hrithik has successful brain surgery, to be discharged soon

Hrithik Roshan, one of the reigning stars of the Hindi film industry, underwent a brain surgery for removal of a clot at the Hinduja Hospital here Sunday. The surgery was successful and he should be out of the hospital in the next 48 hours, said his father and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan.

The 39-year-old was wheeled out of the operation theatre around 3 p.m. His parents and wife Sussanne were present throughout the 50-minute neuro-surgery to correct the chronic subdural hematoma condition.

Sushil Modi condemns blasts in Bodh Gaya, critical of Centre, Nitish

Former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Sunday condemned the terror attack in the internationally renowned temple town of Bodh Gaya, and lashed out at the Centre and Nitish Kumar Government for what he called their ” failure” to provide adequate security to the Buddhist shrine.

“We condemn the terror attack on Mahabodhi temple and adjoining areas in no uncertain terms and thank God that there were no casualties in the serial blasts,” he said.

Modi, who visited the blast sites, said that no measures were taken to prevent the attack despite intelligence warnings.

Six Maoists killed in encounter in Gadchiroli

Six Maoists were killed in an encounter with the police forces near Etapalli tehsil in Maharashtra”s Gadchiroli District today.

The police, which has recovered the dead bodies of the ultras, recovered one 303 carbine, three 12 bore rifles and some cartridges from the spot.
