Herwadkar, Saif and Jol power India into U-19 final

Opener Akhil Herwadkar and skipper skipper Vijay Jol have ensured that India are through to the final of the Under-19 international cricket series, powering past hosts Australia by seven wickets here at the Marrara Oval.

India, who had beaten Australia in their opening round robin match by 47 runs, remained unbeaten in the tournament and their last match against New Zealand Wednesday will decide their opponents in Friday’s final.

Though Australia are in second place on a superior run rate, New Zealand can overtake them with a better performance in their last game of the series.

2G spectrum: Court to hear CBI’s plea on Radia tapes

A Delhi court will on Tuesday hear the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) plea seeking permission to place on record a CD of 62 intercepted telephonic conversations of former corporate lobbyist Niira Radia with various persons in connection with the 2G spectrum allocation scam case.

A Raja had last week opposed in a Delhi court CBI’s plea for placing on record a CD containing recorded conversations and transcripts of calls of Niira Radia.

Eight killed in Pakistan suicide bombing

At least eight people were killed and nine others injured when a suicide bomber attacked a vehicle carrying pro-government tribal leaders in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal region, media reports said.

The explosion took place around 4.15 p.m. in Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Xinhua reported citing Urdu TV Channel Dunya.

The blast occurred when a vehicle carrying the brother and companions of pro-government local tribal elder Malik Habib was passing through Torawari area of Doaba town.

Ghaziabad school boy gone missing

A 15-year-old boy has gone missing in Kothwali area, police said today.

Vishal, a class tenth student of Mahanand Mission Harijan (M M H) College and resident of Sarai Najarulli area has been missing since Saturday, after he left his home to get his marksheet from college, police said.

The boy’s brother Jitendra, in a complaint filed with the police, said that Vishal did not return home after he left for the college and they also enquired with the institute authorities whether the boy had reached there or not.

Pakistani actress Meesha Shafi is making her Bollywood debut with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, a biopic on the legendary sprinter Milkha Singh.

The model-singer, who made her film debut in Mira Nair’s “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” will be seen in her first Hindi film with Farhan Akhtar, who is playing the title role of Milkha Singh.

She is playing the role of Perizaad, who is the best friend to Akhtar’s onscreen character of the iconic sportsman.

Abhijeet Das wanted to cast Kangana in ‘Khmoshiyan’

Debutant director Abhijeet Das revealed that he wanted actress Kangana Ranuat in his short film ‘Khamoshiyan’ but ended up casting Raima Sen.

Das is quite excited about the film, that revolves around a dog lover.

“I have worked with Kangana in ‘Life in a Metro’ and ‘Woh Lamhe’. I wanted her to do this film. I felt she was perfect as she had dogs, she could understand the emotions well and she was quite comfortable with them. But she wasn’t available for this project as she had back-to-back films to shoot,” Das told PTI.

China to spend $113 mn for environment

In an endeavour to improve the country’s environment, the Chinese government has decided to spend over 700 million yuan (over $113 million) for funding the forestry projects, the finance ministry said Monday.

Some 198.06 million yuan will fund erosion control and other projects in 24 regions, including north China’s Beijing Municipality, Hebei province and Inner Mongolia region, reported Xinhua citing the ministry.

UNICEF condemns killing of students in Nigeria

The UN’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Monday condemned the killing of over 20 schoolchildren in Nigeria’s Yobe state over the weekend.

Gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect Saturday attacked a government secondary school in Mamudo villag, killing more than 20 students, a teacher and an Islamic preacher. The attack occurred while the students were asleep, Xinhua reported.

There can be no justification for targeting children and those looking after them, the UNICEF said in a statement issued by its regional director for West and Central Africa Manuel Fontaine.

Nineteen US soldiers killed in eastern Afghanistan: Taliban

Taliban militants in Afghanistan claim they have killed 19 US soldiers in an attack on a military convoy in the eastern province of Ghazni.

A spokesman for the militant group said the attack was carried out on Monday in Khogyani District of the province.

There has been no word of confirmation by the US military.

Attacks on foreign troops are expected to rise in the coming months, as Taliban militants have announced the beginning of their ‘offensive’ across Afghanistan.

Power problems in AP may continue for another few months

Power woes of citizens of Andhra Pradesh are likely to continue for another few months as the state government’s efforts to buy additional electricity from outside sources is bearing no fruit due to “corridor constraints”.

Officials of the Power Transmission Corporation of AP (AP Transco) told Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, during a high-level review meeting here today, that only about 1500 MW of power, as against 3000 MW ordered since June, was likely to be available from outside sources because of corridor constraints in the new grid.

State Govt. has decided to celebrate the birthday of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad as the day of Minorities Welfare also. It was being celebrated as the National Education Day earlier. Mr. Ahmed Nadeem, IAS, Secretary, Dept. of Minorities Welfare issued G.O. 104 yesterday declaring the decision of Govt. of A.P. to celebrate it as the day of Minorities Welfare. Instructions have been issued to the district collector to arrange function on that day. It was also decided to present awards to noted personalities on that day by A.P. Urdu Academy.
