One killed, 2 injured in clash over WB panchayat poll result

A Congress worker was killed and two others injured in a clash in Jalpaiguri district after the panchayat results were declared on Friday, police said.

The clash happened between workers of Trinamool Congress and Congress in Alipurduar’s number one gram panchayat area after the panchayat results were declared.

The injured were taken to a local hospital.

Stage set for CM’s Iftar party

Minority Welfare Minister Mohammed Ahmedullah visited Nizam College Ground on Monday along with the high officials of various departments and reviewed the arrangements for Iftar party scheduled to be hosted by chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy on August 2. Minority Welfare Minister convened a review meet along with Mr. Abid Rasool Khan Chairman Minority Commission in which the officials of various departments apprised them about the execution of the duties assigned to them.

Gang involved in medical colleges admission fraud busted

Two persons, one of them director of a private firm, were arrested and police claimed to have busted a new gang involved in facilitating fraudulent admissions in Madhya Pradesh’s medical colleges.

They were identified as Santosh Gupta and Sudheer Rai, Deputy Inspector General Rakesh Gupta told reporters in Indore. Santosh, who hails from Jabalpur, was apprehended from that city while Rai is a local resident. Rai is director of a private consultancy firm which claims to help students get admission in private medical colleges in the state, he said.

John Kerry to visit Pakistan on July 31

US Secretary of State John Kerry, who had earlier postponed his visit to Pakistan, will arrive here on July 31 on his first trip to hold meetings with the country’s top political and military leadership.

Kerry had accepted an invitation to visit Pakistan, extended to him by Sartaj Aziz, advisor on national security and foreign affairs to the Pakistani prime minister, on the sidelines of the 20th Ministerial Meeting of the ASEAN Regional Forum July 2. The US Secretary of State was previously expected to arrive in Pakistan on July 29.

Complaints drop at Minority Grievance Cell

The weekly Minority Grievance Cell for redressal of grievances pertaining to Minority Welfare institutions was held on Monday. The Grievance Cell held at Hajj House Nampally was monitored by Secretary Director Urdu Academy, Prof. S A Shukoor. Officials of Minority Finance Corporation, Waqf Board, Christian Finance Corporation, Minority Welfare Commissionerate and other institutions participated in the meeting.

Mild earthquake measuring 4 on Richter Scale jolts

Mild tremor measuring 4 on the Richter Scale jolted Kutch region on Monday, officials at the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) said.

However, no casualty or damage was reported, officials said.

“The epicentre of the tremor was eight kilometres North East of Vamca town in Kutch, with its impact felt upto Kantkot village and Rajkot,” ISR officials said.

Congress may announce new state today

New Delhi: Notwithstanding Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy’s strong opposition to the division of the state, the Congress high command appears inclined towards creation of a separate Telangana state.

The final decision on the issue is expected to be taken at a meeting of party’s highest policy making body, the Congress working committee on Tuesday evening. The CWC will meet after deliberations in the UPA Coordination Committee.

As per reports, the coordination committee will meet at 4 pm followed by the meeting of the CWC at 5.30 pm.

India to open World Cup defence against Pakistan on Feb 15

Defending champions India will take on arch-foes Pakistan in their opening match of the ICC cricket World Cup to be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand from February 14 to March 29.

Placed in the relatively easy Group B, India, who won the 2011 event after defeating Sri Lanka in the final in Mumbai, will start their title defence on February 15.

Incidentally, India have never lost to Pakistan in any of their five World Cup clashes so far.

BCCI’s hasty probe comes under attack

A day after its probe panel handed out clean chits to IPL owners in the spot-fixing scandal, the BCCI today came under sharp attack for not taking police inputs before completing its “hasty” investigations, prompting fresh calls for the cash-rich body to be brought under RTI ambit.

Even as the BCCI defended the report of its probe panel, the Sports Ministry made it clear that it does not give much importance to the verdict and would rather wait for the police investigations to get over.

AP CM Kiran Kumar Reddy may resign, coming to Delhi today

A source said that Reddy, who himself is opposed to the bifurcation, may consider resigning if the proposal goes through.

If Telangana is created, so should be Gorkhaland, says GJM

With a three-day bandh beginning in Darjeeling today, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha chief Bimal Gurung said if the Centre announced a Telengana state then it should also declare one for Gorkhaland.

‘Our demand for Gorkhaland is older than the demand for Telengana. If the Centre announces a Telengana state then it should also declare a Gorkhaland state,’ Gurung told a press conference here.

The GJM president said that the bandh would be extended indefinitely till the Centre acceded to the demand.
