Amount sanctioned for underground water sump at Makkah Masjid

The government has released Rs. 1.10 crores for the construction of underground water sump at historical Makkah Masjid. Minority Welfare Department issued orders in this connection. Secretary Minority Welfare Ahmed Nadeem decided to issue the amount after reviewing the pending works at Makkah Masjid. The construction work of the sump has been assigned to Water Works and Sewerage Board.

After Telangana, now demand for Vidarbha gains momentum

With the UPA government likely to concede the demand for creation of Telangana state, the call for carving out a separate Vidarbha state out of Maharashtra has started gaining heat.

Staunch protagonist of Vidarbha state, former BJP MP Banwarilal Purohit, who formed a political outfit for fighting for the cause, told PTI that his party had passed a resolution in its Bhubneshwar executive committee in 1992 supporting separate Vidarbha.

Now, the BJP should convince its alliance partner Shiv Sena to concede the demand, he said.

Man kills mother, brother, self over property

A man gunned down his mother and brother in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district before pulling the trigger on himself following a bitter property feud, police said.

The incident took place Monday in the Pradeura village of Mitauli area where the village chief Sanjay Verma was locked in a property dispute with his brother Sandeep Verma.

Two days back the duo had an ugly spat over the ancestral property but they were pacified by neighbours and other villagers.

Driver of train in Spain crash had no idea where he was

Francisco Jose Garzon, the driver of the high-speed train involved in a derailment that killed 79 people last week, told investigating Judge Luis Alaez that he lost track of his position and did not know where he was on the evening the accident occurred, sources told EFE.

Garzon, who has been charged with 79 counts of homicide and numerous other crimes, admitted that he was going at double the 80 kph speed limit on the curve in A Grandeira.

The driver told investigators that he “managed to” hit the brakes but it was too late.

Trial in poisoned dumplings case opens in China

A Chinese worker, who allegedly injected poison to frozen dumplings exported to Japan causing sickness to 10 people in 2008, went on trial today.

The Shijiazhuang Intermediate People’s Court in north China’s Hebei province began the trial of 39-year-old Lv Yueting, who was dissatisfied with his salary and working conditions and allegedly poisoned dumplings four years ago, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

14-year-old girl raped by stepfather

A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her stepfather on several occasions over a year in Ramgarh area of the district, police said today.

An FIR has been registered against the accused Abdul Sattar (40), a resident of Kashmiri Gate locality in Ramgarh.

According to a complaint filed by the victim’s mother, the accused was found raping the girl last night, Additional Superintendent of Police, Rakesh Pandey said.

The victim also told the police that she was being sexually exploited by her step father for over a year, Pandey added.

‘Weather, not vandals, damaged Buddha statues in China’

Fluctuating temperatures are to blame for Buddha statues with missing heads in Beijing’s famous Summer Palace park, officials said, dismissing speculation that they were vandalised.

Photos of Buddha statues, heads of which were missing, went viral on the internet over the weekend, sparking speculation that they may have been decapitated by vandals.

But the park’s management said temperature changes caused the heads to expand and contract, eventually loosening them from the statues.

Rs 10 lakh worth ganja seized

Ten kg of ganja, worth about Rs 10 lakh in the international market, was seized by Customs and Excise officials today from Kambipadu coastal area near Dhanushkodi early this morning, police said.

The officials, acting on a tip off that some persons planning to smuggle the contraband to Sri Lanka, were on patrol when they spotted the ganja hidden behind some bushes, they said.

Nobody has been arrested so far in connection with the seizure, they said.

Normal life was disrupted for the second day today due to the 72-hour bandh called in the Darjeeling hills by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha to demand Gorkhaland.

All shops, markets, school, colleges, government offices, banks and post offices were closed with GJM supporters gathering at Chowkbazar in Darjeeling as also in the two other hill subdivisions of Kurseong and Kalimpong, reports said.

Army today foiled two infiltration bids along the Line of Control in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, killing two militants.

An infiltration bid was foiled by troops along the LoC in Macchil Sector of Kupwara district, a defence spokesman said.

Two militants have been killed in the operation, which was going on till reports last came in.

The spokesman said another counter-infiltration operation was in progress in Hafruda forests of nearby Handwara area in the district.

Four members of family shot dead in Mexico

Four members of a family were gunned down over the weekend outside the Mexican Pacific resort city of Acapulco by unidentified individuals, media reports said.

A man shot twice in the chest is listed in serious condition following Sunday’s shooting, the Novedades de Acapulco newspaper reported.

One of the dead is a 34-year-old woman who was six months’ pregnant, the daily said, adding that the motive for the killings has not been determined.

The murders occurred in Ampliacion Lazaro Cardenas, a neighbourhood on the outskirts of Acapulco.

Blast damages chemical factory in China

A powerful explosion damaged a controversial paraxylene plant in China’s eastern Fujian Province, officials said Tuesday.

No casualties have been reported, according to the county government. A fire that erupted after the explosion has been brought under control, officials said.

The controversial chemical plant was built in 2009 on Gulei Peninsula after the project was called off in the coastal city of Xiamen amid protests over potential pollution and health problems, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Hyderabad will be Telangana’s capital: Damodar

Damodar Raja Narasimha, deputy chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, on Tuesday expressed confidence that the state of Telangana will become a reality.

“I am 100 percent positive that Telangana will be a reality,” Narasimha said.

Five die in helicopter crash in Romania

Authorities say five people have died, including three German citizens, after a helicopter crashed into a lake in northwest Romania shortly after takeoff.

Ovidiu Petru Oltean, the mayor of the town of Taureni where the crash occurred, said the helicopter crashed yesterday minutes after takeoff into a two-meter (6.6 feet) deep lake. He said three unidentified German businessmen, Romanian businessman Sorin Terbea, and the pilot died in the crash. They had been visiting a wood manufacturing plant in the area.
