Uttarakhand floods: Rescue operations on, 200 evacuated from Badrinath

After an initial delay due to unfavourable weather conditions, rescue work in Badrinath area of flood-hit Uttarakhand resumed on Saturday, and nearly 200 pilgrims have so far been evacuated from the shrine, officials said.

The operation, which is in its last leg and focuses largely on Badrinath, where nearly 1,400 people were reported to be stuck, is likely to be completed by this evening if the weather permits, officials said.

Bone marrow stem cell transplant reduces insulin usage in type 2 diabetes patients

A new study has found that patients with type 2 diabetes transplanted with own bone marrow stem cells required less insulin post surgery.

The study carried out in India examining the safety and efficacy of self-donated (autologous), transplanted bone marrow stem cells in patients with type 2 diabetes (TD2M), has found that patients receiving the transplants, when compared to a control group of TD2M patients who did not receive transplantation, required less insulin post-transplantation.

What causes cancer revealed

Researchers from the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research in Tokyo have discovered that forced elongation of telomeres (extensions on the end of chromosomes) promotes the differentiation of cancer cells, probably reducing malignancy, which is strongly associated with a loss of cell differentiation.

“Cancer cells may maintain short telomeres to maintain their undifferentiated state,” Hiroyuki Seimiya, a researcher on the study, said.

Telomeres are protective extensions on the ends of chromosomes, which shorten as cells age, like an hourglass running down.

Medical marijuana is kosher, says Israeli orthodox rabbi Efraim Zalmanovich

An orthodox rabbi of the Israeli town of Mazkeret Batia has claimed that distributing and smoking marijuana is kosher as long as it’s for medical purposes.

According to an article on NRG, the website of the Maariv newspaper, Efraim Zalmanovich said that taking drugs to escape this world in any excessive way is certainly forbidden, the Huffington Post reported.

After failing to trace her parents, who had gone to Kedarnath pilgrimage, a 35-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide in Gwalior, police said on Saturday.

The dejected woman, Mamta Tripathi hung herself yesterday when her family could not find the whereabouts of father Nathuram Parashar (60), mother Kamla Devi (50), uncle Satish Parashar and aunt Vimla Devi, who had left for the pilgrim town on June 5, they said.

Mexican ex-governor sentenced in NY to 11 years

A former governor of a Mexican state who admitted to conspiring to launder money in a New York drug case has been sentenced to just under 11 years in prison, but may face as little as three more years behind bars in the United States.

Mario Ernesto Villanueva Madrid, 64, was sentenced in US District Court in Manhattan to 10 years and 11 months in prison after he pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to commit money laundering. He was originally accused of conspiring to import hundreds of tons of cocaine.

Girl’s hand chopped off

In a dastardly act, some men allegedly chopped off a hand of a minor girl, who was a witness in kidnapping case of her younger sister by them, in the capital city here.

An FIR has been registered with Kadamkuan police station in the case on the basis of statement of girl’s father, city police said today.
