Two farmers attempt self-immolation

Two farmers tried to immolate themselves in Dadri area of Gautam Budh Nagar district on Wednesday, demanding higher compensation for their land acquired by a private builder.

On Wednesday, around 50 farmers gathered at Hi-Tech city and started protesting, police said, adding that two of them tried self-immolation.

All of them were detained and taken to police station, said Anuj Chaudhary, Dadri Deputy Superintendent of Police.

Later, they were pacified and released, the DSP said, adding that an assurance of a meeting with the builder was given to them.

PCB keen to go ahead with Ramazan T20 Cup, seeks clearance

The Pakistan Cricket Board has asked for security clearance from the Sindh provincial government for conducting a national T20 championship during the month of Ramazan.

Recent terror attacks in Sindh, in Pakistan’s biggest city, have forced PCB to have second thoughts.

“We have now written to the concerned departments in Sindh asking for their input and basically clearance for the tournament as we need to have top level security arrangements for it,” a senior PCB official said.

284 Andhra pilgrims still untraceable in Uttarakhand

As many as 284 pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh remained unaccounted for in the flood-ravaged Uttarakhand.

According to a release from the State Disaster Management Commissioner’s office here today, 2,782 pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh were stranded in the hill state, which was hit by heavy rains and landslides over 10 days ago.

Among them, 1,628 people have returned home safely, while 858 were reported to be safe though they have not reached their native places yet. As many as 284 pilgrims were still unaccounted for as on today, it said.

Non-issuance of amount for scholarships and reimbursement

By allotting the budget of Rs. 1027 crore for minorities for the year 2013-14, the state government tried to prove itself minority friendly but the minority budget for the year 2012-13 towards scholarship and fee-reimbursement has not been issued so far; as a result the students are facing a lot of difficulties.

Cuba, Saudi Arabia to collaborate on healthcare

Cuban government has agreed to send a team of doctors to work in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh, marking the first occasion Cuban healthcare professionals to have a presence in the Arab country, Xinhua reported.

Egypt refers nine to court over spying for Israel

Egypt’s public prosecutor referred nine people, including six foreigners, to the criminal court Wednesday for allegedly spying for Israel, a media report said.

Talaat Abdullah ordered three Egyptians and six Israelis including four officers at the Israeli directorate of military intelligence to the court. But it wasn’t clear whether all of them were in the country or on trial in absentia, Xinhua reported.

Investigations by security prosecutor revealed that three Egyptians, all residents of Rafah in North Sinai, had acted with the Israeli officers and two Israeli Arabs to spy on Egypt.

Don’t take ‘smoking is haram’ fatwa lightly, Muslims told

Many Muslims in this country are still taking lightly the ‘smoking is haram’ fatwa, that was decided by the Muzakarah Committee of the National Fatwa Council for Islamic Religious Affairs in 1995.

Hence, Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Islamic Affairs), Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman urged Muslims, especially in the state, to realise that smoking had been decreed as haram in line with Islamic teachings.

He said the edict (fatwa) issued by the national committee was agreed upon by the Sarawak Fatwa Council.

Govt plan: Wakf assets to churn funds for Muslims

To generate income for the welfare of Muslim community, the central government has proposed to set up a National Wakf Development Corporation (NWDC) to develop wakf or religious endowment property on commercial lines.

Through this, the government hopes to generate Rs 12,000 crore annually, which will be used for the welfare of the community.

Union minority affairs minister K Rahman Khan on Tuesday announced that his ministry has initiated the move that will also include an efficient and comprehensive management of wakf property.

GMR Airport officials refused to give concession to Hajj pilgrims

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport of Hyderabad has been constructed on Wakf land. Hajj pilgrims going to Saudi Arabia from this Airport are not getting any concession in user charges. According to decisions taken by Directors of GMR 50% relief which used to be given earlier in user charges has been discontinued. It is alleged that this has happened due to the weak attitude of the State Hajj Committee and AP State Wakf Board. Both these are the institutions working under the department of Minorities Welfare.

Division among Muslim people solely benefits US, Israel: Iran minister

Iran’s Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi has warned that the United States and Israel are the sole beneficiaries of sectarian division in the Muslim world.

In a Wednesday interview, Vahidi condemned the recent killing of four Shia Muslims by Takfiri extremists in Egypt, noting, “The US and the occupying regime of al-Quds (Israel) are the only parties which take advantage of rifts between different Islamic denominations.”

On Sunday, a group of Takfiri extremists attacked the house of Shia cleric Sheikh Hassan Shehata in a village near Cairo in Giza Province.

Israel agrees to open Muslim prayer rooms in six largest hospitals

Israel’s six largest hospitals will open Muslim prayer rooms within the next 18 months, the Health Ministry informed the High Court of Justice Wednesday in response to a petition on the issue.

Health Ministry director general Roni Gamzu assured the court Wednesday that within the next year and a half, Ichilov (Tel Aviv), Sheba (Tel Hashomer), Beilinson (Petah Tikva), Hadassah-Ein Karem (Jerusalem), Rambam (Haifa) and Soroka (Be’er Sheva) hospitals will have all Muslim prayer rooms. Rambam and Soroka already have such areas, he said.
