Earphone plugged in, B.Tech student dies

Crossing the railway track with earphones plugged in, a 21-year-old B.Tech student died when he was hit by a train near Avadhpuri crossing in Kalyanpur locality, police said on Saturday.

Abhay died while crossing the railway tracks last evening. He was run over by the Kasjang- Farrukhabad passenger train, a police spokesman said.

Abhay could not hear the sound of the approaching train as he had mobile headphones plugged in his ear, locals said.

Russia to sell 10 fighter jets to Syria

Russia has planned to sign a new agreement to ship at least 10 MiG-29 M/M2 fighter jets to Syria. MiG”s Director General, Sergei Korotkov, said that Russia is providing weapons to Bashar al-Assad”s government intended to protect Syria from foreign invasion, reported News 24. The MiG-29 M/M2 fighters is an advanced version of the MiG 29 twin-engine fighter jet and has been a mainstay of Soviet and Russian Air Force since mid-1980s, the report added.

India’s 2012 GDP hits decade low

India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the 2012 fiscal year grew less than 5 percent, the lowest in a decade, according to data published by the government of India.

According to the data, GDP in the last three months of the year that ended in March 2013, was only 4.8 percent. The manufacturing sector grew 2.6 percent while the agricultural export grew 1.4 percent.

Fuel hike caused by Rupee depreciation, Moily

The increase in prices of petrol and diesel was to respond to the rupee depreciation, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Veerappa Moily said today defending the hike effected after the rupee hit a 11-month low making oil imports costlier.

“Petrol price you should know that (for) every one rupee depreciation it will cost Rs 9,000 crore. Where do you find that Rs 9,000 crore. We cannot manufacture money. It has to be collected from some resources. Therefore we collect that much, not more than that,” he said.

Need to improve quality of higher education: Prez

Stating there was need to improve the quality of higher education in India, President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday expressed concern over Indian universities not figuring among the top institutions across the world.

“Today there in no Indian university amongst the top 200 universities in the world. This situation must be improved,” Mukherjee said the valedictory function of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Dayanand Education Society here.

Infosys appoints Narayana Murthy as chairman again

Indian IT bellwether Infosys Ltd. Saturday appointed its co-founder and chairman emeritus N.R. Narayana Murthy as the executive chairman and additional director on its board.

In a regulatory filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the global software major said incumbent K.V. Kamath would step down as chairman of the board from Saturday and be an independent director.

“Murthy’s election as a director will be placed for the consideration of the shareholders in the annual general meeting (AGM) on June 15,” the company said in the filing.

23 militants killed in Pakistan

At least 23 militants were killed in an overnight operation launched by Pakistan Army in the country’s northwest tribal area of Kurram Agency, a media report said Saturday.

The clashes between militants and security forces also killed two soldiers and wounded five, reported Xinhua citing a media report.

The operation started last night in the Para Chamkani area of Kurram Agency, a restive tribal region which borders east Afghanistan.

During the operation, security forces also reportedly destroyed four militant hideouts.

Pakistan National Assembly’s first session starts

The first session of Pakistan’s newly-elected National Assembly started Saturday with the oath-taking of its members here.

Speaker of the outgoing National Assembly Fehmida Mirza administered the oath to the new members. Mirza, who is also an elected member of the National Assembly, congratulated the new members in her brief remarks, reported Xinhua.

State and private TV channels aired live the oath-taking ceremony.

Shukla’s condition improves marginally

Congress leader V.C. Shukla, injured in a Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh, has shown signs of improvement but remains critical, doctors said Saturday.

“He has shown marginal improvement but is not out of danger and remains critical,” A.K. Dubey, medical superintendent of the Medanta Hospital here, told IANS.

Doctors performed exploratory laparotomy surgery (a diagnostic tool that allows physicians to examine the abdominal area) last week when he was admitted to the hospital.

BCCI calls emergency meet Sunday

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called an emergency working committee meeting in Chennai Sunday amid the ongoing crisis in the Indian cricket following the IPL spot fixing scandal, an official said.

BCCI joint secretary Anurag Thakur Saturday confirmed that the meeting will be held at 2.30 p.m.

“All the issues will be discussed during this meeting and I believe (it will be) by tomorrow 2.30 p.m., when the meeting starts. We have enough issues to be discussed,” said Thakur.

Nepal picks May 28 as National Day

The government of Nepal has decided to observe May 28 of each year as the National Day, ending years of confusion over the issue since the country turned into a republic in 2008.

On May 28, 2008, the first meeting of Constituent Assembly declared Nepal as a federal republic, bringing to an end the 240-year-old monarchy.

After the establishment of republic, there has been confusion about the National Day, and the country has not formally celebrated the National Day over the last seven years. Before that, Nepal used to mark the king’s birthday as a National Day, reported Xinhua.

Mr. Mohammed Siddique son of late Mohammed Ismail left office as Assistant Sub inspector of Police, on May 31. He served in Law and Order, Traffic and Special branch during his service and achieved more than 100 awards.

He was initially appointed as a constable in police department, later he was promoted as head constable and reached the post of ASI before retirement.

Srinivasan may quit tomorrow at Working Committee meeting

An emergency meeting of the BCCI will be held in Chennai tomorrow in which beleaguered President Srinivasan may announce his resignation from the post after he has been virtually isolated by his team in the Board.

As pressure mounted on him to quit in the wake of the IPL spot-fixing scandal and the arrest of his son-in-law on betting charges, the BCCI has advanced the Working Committee meeting which Srinivasan had planned to convene next Saturday.

The remains of dozens of Palestinians killed by Israelis in fighting following the 1948 foundation of the Israeli state have been found in a mass grave in Tel Aviv’s Jaffa district.

Hack vulnerable Yahoo Mail ditched as default email service

A British telecom company has ditched the third-largest email provider, Yahoo Mail, as its default email service, keeping in view the service’s vulnerability to getting hacked.

Online director for British Telecom’s consumer division, Nick Wong, said the company would be switching the email of its six million customers over to its own BT Mail, which will incorporate all the features and functions of a modern email service, reports Huffington Post.

Bridegroom went missing on marriage day
(Siasat News): In a bizarre incident, a bridegroom mysteriously went missing on the day of his marriage.

Inspector Santosh Nagar Mr. K V Prasad said that Mohd Toufique, 25, resident of Moin Baug, scheduled to get married today but he went missing two days before his marriage.

The relatives of Toufique lodged a complaint in Santosh Nagar police station in which they claimed that Toufique himself had taken keen interest in different arrangements of his marriage.
