”No agreement with Taliban unless issue of terrorism is directly addressed”: US

US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, James Dobbins, on Thursday said that there is no prospect of any agreement with Taliban unless they distance themselves from international terrorism.

“We certainly agree that there is no prospect for improving relations with the Taliban or, any agreement with the Taliban, unless the issue of terrorism is directly addressed,” Dobbins said.

Pakistan forms committee to investigate Musharraf”s emergency rule

Pakistani government has formed a high level committee to investigate the emergency rule former military ruler had imposed in 2007, the Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan said in the parliament on Thursday. Musharraf, who faces high treason charges for abrogating the constitution during his 1999-2008 rule, had imposed emergency rule in November 2007, and suspended the constitution. He had also placed dozens of top judges under house arrest who had refused to take oath under his Provisional Constitutional Order.

Karunanidhi urges action to protect Indian workers in Saudi Arabia

DMK president M. Karunanidhi Thursday urged the central and the Tamil Nadu state governments to act to protect the livelihood of workers from the state who have been affected by the new labour law in Saudi Arabia.

In a statement issued here, Karunanidhi said a large number of Tamil workers have been working in Saudi Arabia, and living with their families there.

“The central and the state governments should intervene and take steps to protect their livelihood, so they can continue to live there,” Karunanidhi said.

Around 81 per cent people get disturbed when they see their doctors smoking and would not like to be treated by one who smoke in front of him, according to a survey.

Sixty-seven per cent of the respondents of the survey, conducted by city-based Heart Care Foundation, also believe doctors should have legible handwriting and favoured an electronic prescription.

The findings of the survey were made public by Foundation president Dr K K Aggarwal here today.

Over 100 villages, 50,000 people hit by floods in Assam

The flood situation in Assam took a serious turn today with over 100 villages inundated and nearly 50,000 affected people so far.

Ten more villages have been affected in worst-hit Dhemaji district taking the total to 35. An additional 10,000 people have been hit, the district administration said.

“There has been no casualty so far,” an official said.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that apart from Dhemaji, 70 villages have been affected in Golaghat, Kamrup, Karimganj and Jorhat districts.

BJP will win 40 seats in UP, says Rajnath

Soldier killed in Kashmir cremated in Andhra

The last rites of soldier M. Yadaiah, killed in a militant attack in Jammu and Kashmir three days ago, were performed Thursday with military honours in Andhra Pradesh.

The cremation took place in his native Kondareddypalle village of Mahabubnagar district, about 90 km from here.

The arrangements for the last rites were made under the supervision of Major General Cyrus A. Pithawalla, general officer commanding, Andhra sub-area, said a defence statement.

Modi meets Thackeray, warmly received in Mumbai

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Thursday met Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray shortly after his arrival here.

The meeting took place before Modi went to address a Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) core committee meeting in the city where he was accorded a rousing reception.

Details of what transpired at the Modi-Thackeray meeting were not available. The Shiv Sena is the oldest ally of the BJP.

Party leaders including state president Devendra Fadnavis and hundreds of activists welcomed him at the Mumbai airport.

Sooraj’s judicial custody extended till July 11

A Mumbai court Thursday extended the judicial custody of Sooraj Pancholi, charged with abetting the suicide of Bollywood actress Nafisa alias Jiah Khan, till July 11.

Pancholi, 22, son of actor couple Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, was produced before the Andheir magistrate after the expiry of his judicial custody in the morning.

At the hearing, the police prosecutor opposed Sooraj’s bail plea on grounds that the probe into Jiah’s case was at a critical state and his release on bail could hamper investigations.
