Crucial bypolls underway in Bihar and Bengal

Voting for bypolls in Bihar and West Bengal began on Sunday morning amidst high security.

In Bihar, the bypoll is underway in Maharajganj for a Lok Sabha seat. Over 14 lakh 98 thousand voters are eligible to exercise their voting rights.

There are six candidates in fray. The by-election is being held due to death of RJD member Uma Shankar Singh. The counting of votes will be held on June 5.

The bypoll in Bihar is being viewed as a major battle between Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Committee favours degree colleges in 90 minority districts

Voicing concern over the level of participation of minority children in higher education, a committee has favoured setting up of model degree colleges in 90 minority-concentrated districts with full central assistance to the states.

“One college may be established in each such district which may offer courses in science, humanities and commerce,”
the Standing Committee of the National Monitoring Committee for Minorities Education suggested in its report presented to the HRD Ministry recently.

UPA to discuss food security bill on Monday

The much awaited Food Security Bill is expected to reach a higher level on Monday as the Congress Party will discuss the bill in its UPA Coordination Committee meet.

The decision was taken on Saturday at the Congress Core Group meet at the Prime Minister”s residence.

Meanwhile, UPA Government has an option to get the Food Security bill passed either in a special session of the parliament, or to implement through an ordinance or executive order.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh were present during the meeting.

11,000 cr to improve drinking water supply in Hyderabad: CM

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday said a sum of Rs 11,000 crore would be spent in the next two years to improve drinking water supply in Hyderabad.

The Chief Minister laid the foundation-stone for the Rs 1,670 crore Krishna phase-3 drinking water supply project at Vanasthalipuram here today.

Speaking on the occasion, he said Hyderabad was currently getting 1.6 tmc ft of drinking water every month, which would increase by 1.3 tmc ft once the Krishna phase-3 and Godavari drinking water projects were completed by the middle of next year.

Three years after his arrest in Iraq for allegedly causing America’s worst ever national security breach, US Army private Bradley Manning finally goes on trial tomorrow over his disclosures to WikiLeaks.

Manning, who faces a possible 154-year jail sentence, has offered to plead guilty to several offenses but he denies
prosecutors’ most serious charge — that he knowingly aided the enemy, chiefly Al-Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden.

PML-N leaders ‘in fix’ over how to handle ‘hot potato’ Musharraf cases

Senior Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) leaders are reportedly in a fix over how to deal with former president retired General Pervez Musharraf’s cases, especially with his presence in the capital, and are uncertain as to how to handle them after prime minister Mian Nawaz Sharif comes to power.

The PML-N leaders are perplexed over Musharraf’s cases of trial under Article 6 of the constitution for imposing emergency in 2007, his alleged role in the Benazir Bhutto and Akbar Bugti murder cases, the Lal Masjid operation and the judges’ detention case, Dawn.com reports.

RSS on Saturday asked Congress to clarify ‘conspiracy theories’ that some BJP leaders were behind the Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh last week which left 27 people, including Congress functionaries, dead.

“The irresponsible behaviour of some Congressmen has stunned many…People are questioning the role of some state Congress leaders in May 25 incident. They are also asking about who was present in the rally and who was not, who came first, who came late and who survived and who got caught in the attack,” RSS mouthpiece ‘Organiser’ said in its latest issue.

Anna Hazare threatens to sit on indefinite fast again

Activist Anna Hazare on Saturday threatened to sit on an indefinite fast again in Delhi from October demanding passage of ‘Janlokpal Bill’.

Hazare announced his decision in a letter shot off to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressing his disappointment over the government failure to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill as promised in 2011.

“Corruption in the country has led to price rise and the government is not doing anything about it, therefore I have decided to go on another fast in October at the Ramlila Maidan,” he said.

He said he would later decide on the date for the fast later.

Polling underway for by-polls to 6 seats in Gujarat

The voting in by-elections to two Lok Sabha and four Assembly seats in Gujarat began this morning amidst tight security.

The bypolls are being held in Porbandar and Banaskantha Parliamentary constituencies and the Assembly seats of Jetpur, Dhoraji, Limbdi and Morva Hadaf.

In view of heat conditions, Election Commission has extended the voting timing. The voting began at 7 am and shall continue till 6 pm (usual timing is 8 am to 5 pm), election officials said.

Eighteen candidates are in the fray for the four Assembly segments and 15 for the two Lok Sabha seats.

Bahraini lawyers to train Indian social workers

Lawyers in Bahrain will train Indian social workers to familiarise them with the laws of the country.

According to Mohan Kumar, India’s ambassador to Bahrain, social workers should be aware of the laws of Bahrain to help members of the Indian community in need, the Gulf Daily News reported Saturday.

“We will invite all social workers to the embassy where they will be briefed by embassy lawyers, including Bahrainis. This will help them give proper advice to those in trouble,” Kumar was quoted as saying.

The curiosity of a rape convict couple to know about a dead woman through RTI proved costly for them as it helped police establish their involvement in three murders, leading a local court to sentence them to life.

Kanhaiya Lal Seth and his wife Usha Rani, who were serving seven year jail term in the rape case of a minor, had sought information under RTI about a dead woman, Wazero, whose photograph was published in media for identification.

Zardari won”t contest for another presidential term

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari wil not be contesting elections for another term after his current five-year term expires in September. Zardari”s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was defeated during the elections in the May general elections, and hence the party is not in a position to have its candidate for the office of president elected, reports The Nation. He earlier claimed that ”conspiracies” hatched by national and international institutions led to the PPP”s defeat in the general elections, adding that he would take active part in politics after his presidential tenure expires.

Children of women who did not finish high school were twice as likely to experience a major episode of depression in early adulthood as children whose mothers obtained a high school diploma, a new study by researchers at McGill University has revealed.

“Our research indicates that a mother’s lack of high school education has a robust impact on her child’s risk of major depressive episode in early adulthood,” said Amelie Quesnel-Vallee, senior author of the study.

2nd suspect charged in UK soldier murder

A second man has been charged with the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby in south-east London.

Michael Adebolajo (28), of Romford, Essex, was charged with the attempted murder of two police officers and possession of a firearm.

He has been remanded in custody to appear in Westminster Magistrates Court on Monday.

Michael Adebowale, 22, has already been charged with the soldier’s murder and appeared in court on Thursday.

Adebowale, of Greenwich, south-east London, was remanded in custody and is due to appear at the Old Bailey, London, on Monday.

Former armed police DIG shoots himself dead

A former DIG of the armed police shot himself dead today with the revolver of his securityman at his home here in Nadia district.

The 63-year-old Saroj Mohan Chakraborty shot himself dead at 11:30 am with the bullet piercing the skull above the
right ear rpt ear, SDPO, Kalyani Chandrasekhar Bardhan.

Chakraborty kept the revolver of his securityman in a drawer in the house. The securityman was in an outhouse at the
time of the shooting, Bardhan said.

A suicide note was found in the room, police sources said.
