14 houses collapse after heavy rainfall in Shimla

As many as 14 houses collapsed while over a dozen houses were partially damaged as heavy rains on Thursday triggered landslide in Krishna Nagar colony in Shimla town.

More than a dozen houses collapsed rendering half a dozen families homeless while a number of houses were partially damaged, police said.

The state capital received 32 mm of rains while Sujanpur Tira in Hamirpur was wettest in the state with 50 mm of rains.

Taliban talks were focus of India-US dialogue

The proposed talks in Qatar between the United States and the Taliban were the focus of discussions here between US Special Representative for Af-Pak James Dobbins and Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai and Special Envoy S.K. Lambah, during which the 2014 Afghan presidential elections were also taken up.

Dobbins met Mathai and Lambah separately on Wednesday.

Britain bans two anti-Islam U.S. bloggers

The British government has banned two prominent U.S. anti-Islam bloggers who had planned to enter the United Kingdom to speak at a far-right rally, the Home Office said Wednesday.

Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer, co-founders of Stop Islamization of America, were planning to appear at a march by the far-right English Defence League in Woolwich, the site in southeast London of the hacking death of a British solider in May.

On their blogs, Geller and Spencer posted copies of a letter from the British Home Office issuing the ban.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Thursday backed Rahul Gandhi as the party’s prime ministerial candidate in 2014, saying that he will have to be convinced to occupy the post.

Over 100,000 rescued, 1,800 still stranded in Uttarakhand

Persistent efforts over the past more than 10 days have succeeded in the evacuation of more than 100,000 people, including locals, from the rain and flood-hit areas of Uttarakhand as authorities cremated more bodies in Kedarnath Thursday. Around 1,800 people are still stranded in the state.

With 12 days elapsing since the flood-rain tragedy hit the state, a clearer picture of the massive losses has began to emerge. Over 1,500 roads have been swept away, while around 2,000 houses and 154 bridges have been damaged.

Evacuation in Kedarnath over, mass cremation continues

Multiple agencies involved in search and rescue operations in flood-ravaged Uttrakhand wrapped up their mission in Kedarnath on Thursday.

Media reports said all those stranded in Kedarnath have been evacuated.

The job of clearing debris and searching dead bodies will now be undertaken by state government agencies.

However, this afternoon, rescuers had to suspend their work after the weather turned bad and heavy rains lashed Badrinath, Dharsu and Harsil sectors where many people are still stranded.

Cabinet to take up issue of CBI autonomy

The Union Cabinet will take up the issue of autonomy to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday.

The Cabinet will take up recommendations of the Group of Ministers (GoM) that was set up to examine the issue.

The GoM”s recommendations may not be made public on Thursday since they are part of the government”s affidavit to the Supreme Court.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah bats for FDI in retail

Karnataka Chief Minister K. Siddaramaiah on Thursday backed Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail sector, and said that his government had no objection for the investment.

He said that he has written a letter to the Commerce Ministry stating that the Government of Karnataka has no objection for Foreign Direct Investment in the retail sector.

“I don”t think there will be any problem regarding the FDI coming to Indian retail sector,” he added.

”Indo-Pak ties will improve Afghan situation”: US envoy

US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, James Dobbins, on Thursday said that improvement in relations between India and Pakistan will automatically improve the situation in Afghanistan.

“I think any improvement in India-Pakistan ties will automatically improve Afghanistan situation. I have met twice now in little more than two weeks with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. And my sense is that improvement in relations with India is very high on his list of priorities,” he told the media here.
