Indian doctors develop low-cost screening for cervical cancer

Tata Memorial Centre, a premier cancer treatment institute in the country, today announced that its researchers have found an inexpensive way to screen for cervical cancer — the most common cancer among Indian women — which can prevent 72,600 deaths worldwide each year.

The procedure, involving use of vinegar, curbed the deaths caused by the cancer by 31 percent in a group of 1.5 lakh women, it said.

Sheila Dikshit meets Shinde over Karbala violence

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit met Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde over the possibility of withdrawing the FIR against those booked for allegedly resorting to a violent protest at Karbala burial ground in January 2012.

“We met Shinde over the Karbala issue today (Monday). The FIR (First Information Report) filed against people who indulged in violence was discussed,” Dikshit told IANS.

New York, June 3 (ANI): Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, Nina Agdal, has refused to let any footage of her with her ex – The Wanted’s Max George – to be shown on television.

Sources told the New York Post that Agdal’s relationship with George developed while cameras rolled for the British boy band’s new E! reality show, “The Wanted Life,” in which she also makes several appearances.

But she won’t sign release forms to allow the footage of her with George to air, fearing that her new boyfriend will dump her when he sees it, the New York Post reported

Actress Asin is likely to team up with Abhishek Bachchan for a comedy film directed by ‘Oh My God’ fame director Umesh Shukla.

“We did speak to her about it (film). But it is at an early stage. Nothing is finalised yet,” Shukla told PTI.

Abhishek and Asin earlier featured together playing brother-sister in Rohit Shetty’s comedy film ‘Bol Bachchan’.

If all goes well, this time they will be paired romantically opposite each other.

“We are reworking on our script. And then accordingly we will decide things. As of now we have not signed any heroine,” Shukla said.

Dhoni receives ICC Shield for being No. 1 in ODIs

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today received the ICC Shield for finishing as the No. 1 ODI team in the Championship table on the April 1, 2013 cut-off date.

In a simple ceremony at the Swalec Stadium here, former ICC president David Morgan presented Dhoni a silver salver and a cheque for USD 175,000.

The brief ceremony took place a few metres away from where the Indians were training ahead of tomorrow’s warm-up match against Australia here.

Cheered by a couple of players and members of the team management, Dhoni looked happy to receive the award from the former ICC boss.

Chennai cops rescue kidnapped British couple, arrest eight

Tamil Nadu Police have rescued a kidnapped British couple. Chennai Police Commissioner S. George, speaking to reporters Monday, said the May 29 kidnap has been cracked and eight of the nine involved in it have been arrested.

One member of the nine-strong gang, comprising Indian nationals and Sri Lankan refugees, is on the run. Of the eight arrested, one is a woman teacher who had been suspended from her job.

22-year-old nabbed in SUV hit-and-run case

Cracking a hit-and-run case within hours, city police today nabbed a youth for allegedly killing a 19-year-old boy by ramming his SUV into an autorickshaw.

22-year-old Rajesh, son of a realtor, was driving the Audi sports utility vehicle, when it rammed the autorickshaw last night, killing Deepak on the spot and seriously injuring another occupant.

The youth was arrested this morning, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M A Saleem said.

The accused has been charged under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and was in police custody, he said.

Diesel under-recovery rises sharply

The under-recovery, or revenue loss, applicable on diesel for the second fortnight effective June 1 has been pegged sharply upwards at Rs.4.87 per litre, the petroleum ministry said Monday.

This compares to the under-recovery of Rs.3.73 per litre during the second fortnight of May 2013, effective May 16.

“In the case of PDS kerosene and domestic LPG, under-recoveries for the month of June 2013 fell to Rs.27.75 per litre (from Rs.27.93 per litre) and Rs.335.14 per cylinder (from Rs.378.38 per cylinder), respectively,” the ministry said in a statement.

UP asked to explain female child marriages

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Monday asked the Uttar Pradesh government to explain if 73 percent females in Maharajganj district were marrying below the age of 18 years.

The commission also expressed its concern over the 28 percent female literacy rate reported by the media in the district.

According to a report, one can find a child bride in almost every second home in villages of the district and adjoining areas of the Indo-Nepal border.

A mother has defied odds of 500,000 to 1 by giving birth to her third set of twins.

Karen Rodger, 41, and husband Colin, 44, from Langbank in Renfrewshire were “over the moon” at the new addition to their family on May 29 at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.

The baby girls, who are not identical, were delivered by caesarean section with Rowan arriving first weighing 5lbs 8oz and two minutes later Isla weighing 6lbs, Sky News reported.

The couple already has four boys – 14-year-olds Lewis and Kyle and Finn and Jude who are both 12.

Scientists from Australia are researching the movements of schools of mosquitofish to investigate if the members of larger groups conform more than the ones in a smaller setting.

The researchers have been scrutinising the movements of schools of mosquitofish that are able to tolerate extreme salinity and temperature.

The fish known Gambusia holbrooki was introduced into Australia in 1925 and live in areas where survival of other fish is difficult.

UPA has mishandled economy, says BJP

The BJP Monday accused the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government of mishandling the economy, causing all round hardship to the people.

Party general secretary Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the economy was on a downslide though the government was led by an economist.

He said GDP growth was hovering around 4.8 percent, industrial production growth was down to one percent, and growth in mining sector had slid to 3.1 percent.

“India’s soverign rating is under threat, private spending has hit an all-time low. Foreign direct investment has gone down by 38 percent.”
