Teenager burnt by jilted lover; succumbs

A 17-year-old girl was allegedly set on fire by a jilted lover after she rejected his marriage proposal, police said today.

The minor girl was allegedly burnt by Ashu Ahirwar (19) yesterday in Chanderi town when she refused to marry him.

She suffered 95 per cent burns and was admitted in the district hospital for treatment where she died last night,
police said.

A case under section 302 of the IPC (relating to murder) has been registered against Ahirwar, who is yet to be
arrested.

Punitive action against 126 students for violence in varsity

Action has been taken against 126 students for their involvement in violence at Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology on April 4, officials said today.

Varying punitive actions have been taken against the students like fines ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 15,000,
expulsion from hostel and monitoring of their activity for up to one year, the university’s media in-charge said.

The university had formed a 22-member committee to probe the incident and on the basis of video footages and other
evidences 126 students were identified, he said.

Pak judge hearing Musharraf case recuses from bench over ”smear campaign”

Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of Islamabad High Court has recused himself from the bench hearing the appeal challenging the cancellation of Pervez Musharraf”s bail in the judges” detention following a “smear campaign” against him on social networking websites. Justice Siddiqui dissociated himself from the IHC”s divisional bench, comprising himself and Justice Riaz Ahmed Khan, at the start of today”s hearing of the appeal, reports The Dawn. The appeal was filed against the rejection of the former military ruler”s post-arrest bail petition by the Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) of Islamabad.

Chemical agents used in Syria, believe UN investigators

There are “reasonable grounds” to believe that chemical agents have been used as weapons in Syria, the report of the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria said Tuesday.

“In four attacks, there are reasonable grounds to believe that limited quantities of toxic chemicals were used,” said the report, presented by the commission chair Paulo Pinheiro to the Human Rights Council’s 23rd session.

NATO confirms 2 soldiers dead in E. Afghan suicide bombing

Two soldiers of the NATO-led coalition forces were killed in a suicide bombing earlier Monday in eastern Afghan province of Paktia which also claimed the lives of 10 children and an Afghan cop and injured 16 others, the coalition confirmed.
“Two International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service members were killed during a vehicle borne improvised explosive device attack in eastern Afghanistan today. The attack also killed and wounded several Afghan civilians,” the NATO-led ISAF said in a press statement.

IPL spot fixing: Delhi court denies Sreesanth, 22 others bail, police invokes MCOCA provisions

Delhi”s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Lokesh Kumar on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of former Test fast bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and 22 others till June 18 in connection with their respective roles in the T20 spot-fixing case.

The extension of judicial custody was effected after Delhi Police informed Kumar that it has invoked provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) against all of them, as they were allegedly facilitating the illegal acts of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his aide Chhota Shakeel.

Andhra Police arrests woman Naxal involved in May 25 Chhattisgarh massacre

Andhra Pradesh Police has arrested a suspected Naxal leader identified as Savita alias Madhvi in Khammam district of the state.

According to a CNN-IBN television channel report, police suspect that Savita was involved in the May 25 attack on a Congress convoy at Darbha Ghati in Chhattisgarh.

They says she was injured during the cross firing.

The channel said that Andhra Police picked up Savita from a car during a routine check.

Savita is allegedly a member of CPI-Maoist Bastar Regional Committee and wife of Central Committee member Chandranana.

DL says he has no idea why he was dropped

Suspended Minister DL Ravindra Reddy said that he has no knowledge as to why he was dropped from the cabinet.

“Democratic values have been on the slide in the country,” he told reporters in the assembly premises after he was denied permission to hold a press meet at the Congress Legislature Party.

The government cannot run by an individual, he said and reiterated that there is no clarity on why he was dropped from the cabinet.
