Women refuse to befriend sexually promiscuous female peers

College-aged women have negative opinions about sexually promiscuous female peers and consider them as unsuitable for friendship, a new study has suggested.

The study by Cornell University developmental psychologists also found that the participants’ preference for less sexually active women as friends remained even when they personally reported liberal attitudes about casual sex or a high number of lifetime lovers.

Stressed middle-aged women falling prey to physical illnesses

In four out of ten cases, women who suffer from long-term have some form of physical complaint, a new study has suggested.

Within the Population Study of Women in Gothenburg, researchers at the University of Gothenburg’s Sahlgrenska Academy have followed around 1,500 women since the late 1960s.

The latest study within the project, which focuses primarily on stress linked to psychosomatic symptoms, showed that one in five middle-aged women had experienced constant or frequent stress during the last five years.

American tourist gang-raped: Himachal Police arrests three accused

Shimla/Manali, June 4 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh Police has arrested the three men accused of raping an American tourist in Manali.

Himachal Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) B. Kamal Kumar said that a special investigating team headed by IG Range has begun its probe into the matter.

“Three men have committed this rape. One of them (the accused) is a truck driver. This incident took place in Vashist village, in Manali. They (members of a special investigating team) have already started the investigation. We have also arrested the three accused persons,” Kumar told ANI in Shimla.

Douglas clarifies cancer and oral sex comments

Michael Douglas has clarified that he was not talking about himself when he commented that oral sex could be a reason behind throat cancer.

The actor’s comments swept the internet but ‘Behind the Candelbra’ star said issued a statement to clarify his previous remarks, the People magazine reported.

“Michael Douglas did not say cunnilingus was the cause of his cancer. It was discussed that oral sex is a suspected cause of certain oral cancers as doctors in the article point out but he did not say it was the specific cause of his personal cancer,” a representative of the actor said.

Woman illegally confined to house for four years rescued

A 35-year-old woman, allegedly locked up in a room by her parents for about four years, was rescued by police from her residence in the city today.

Hemavathi, a graduate in Commerce, was found in a traumatised state when police visited the house after receiving a tip off.

She was lying on the floor looking unkempt and not even properly clothed, police said.
She was later shifted to National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences for treatment.

Looking dazed, Hemavathi told reporters she felt unbearable hunger and got food sometimes.

Road rage: Pakistan summons Indian diplomat

Pakistan Tuesday summoned Indian Deputy High Commissioner Gopal Baglay in Islamabad following a small road accident involving one of its diplomats in New Delhi, an informed source said.

“The Indian deputy high commissioner has been summoned to register our protest over the incident,” an informed source told IANS.

Karnataka government today said the ban imposed on gutka would stay, rejecting the demand of the opposition BJP which argued that the move would hit arecanut growers in the State.

At the end of a debate on the issue in the state Assembly, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said revoking the May 30 government notification would only benefit the gutka lobby and would not help the cause of curbing cancer cases.

Man kills mother and brother

A man allegedly killed his mother and younger brother by beating them up after a quarrel broke out between them over a piece of land at Jhamghat in Bihar’s Munger district, a police officer said today.

Anil Yadav beat up his mother Jagdamba Devi (70) and younger brother Surendra Yadav (40) after a heated argument
over the piece of land last night, Deputy Superintendent of Police Vidyasagar said.

The woman and her younger son died on the spot due to multiple injuries, he said, adding the accused is absconding.

Three children drown in Gujarat

Three children, including two girls of a family, drowned today when they accompanied their mother for washing clothes at a check dam over Hadaf river near Limkheda town here, police said.

Vijay Hathila (8) suddenly fell into the water while her mother was washing clothes. In an attempt to save him, two
sisters Kanta (21) and Neeta (15) also jumped into the water,they said.

Some youths, who were nearby, tried to save the trio but did not succeed. Their bodies were fished out from the
water later, police added.

Astronomers at NASA and Pennsylvania State University have used the Swift satellite to create the most detailed ultraviolet light surveys ever of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, the two closest major galaxies.

“We took thousands of images and assembled them into seamless portraits of the main body of each galaxy, resulting in the highest-resolution surveys of the Magellanic Clouds at ultraviolet wavelengths,” Stefan Immler, who proposed the program and led NASA’s contribution from the agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md said.

Altered gut microbiota could help predict diabetes

Researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden and Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, have found that patients with type 2 diabetes have an altered gut microbiota.

Their findings have led to a new model to identify patients at increased risk of developing diabetes.

The human body contains ten times more bacteria than human cells.

Most of these bacteria comprise the normal gut microbiota.

Our bodies thus contain a vast number of bacterial genes in addition to the genes in our own cells, and are collectively known as the metagenome.

China says all its 34 nuclear reactors are in safe condition

China today said all its 15 operational nuclear power reactors are safe and enhanced efforts are being made to ensure their safety.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) in a report on the status of the reactors said enhanced efforts were made regarding nuclear safety and radiation protection.

Besides the 15 plants, China is constructing 29 nuclear power plants and their construction quality is being well
controlled, state-run Xinhua news agency quoted the report as saying.
