Andhra cabinet re-organisation may happen soon

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy will be carrying a list of probables for possible induction into the state cabinet to New Delhi on Wednesday to seek the Congress high command’s nod for the revamp excercise which is likely this weekend.

The number of vacancies in the state Council of Ministers increased to seven following the resignation of two ministers and dismissal of another in recent days.

IPS officer Vanzara arrested by CBI in Ishrat case from jail

The CBI, probing the 2004 fake encounter case of Isharat Jahan and three others, today arrested suspended IPS officer D G Vanzara from Sabarmati Central Jail here.

The arrest was made after permission granted by a special CBI court earlier in the day, sources said.

He was already behind bars as an accused in the fake encounter cases of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsi Prajapati.

He is likely to be produced before the court tomorrow when CBI would seek his custody for further interrogation.

Vanzara was brought to Sabarmati Central jail yesterday from a Mumbai jail.

2 British soldiers convicted of abusing Afghans

A British soldier has been fined and an officer demoted after admitting abusing civilians in
Afghanistan.

A 22-year-old serviceman who has since left the army admitted two charges of breaching service discipline during a
2011-12 tour.

In one incident he pulled the hand of an Afghan child toward his crotch while saying “touch my special place.” In
another he verbally abused an Afghan boy.

A judge accepted there was no sexual motive, and the soldier was cleared of more serious charges.

Give martyr status to constable killed during police raid: BJP

BJP workers today took out a protest march demanding martyrs’ status for a constable killed during a police operation.

Constable Satish Chand was killed following a May 30 raid in Hathia village where he had gone as part of a special team to arrest a wanted person.

Demonstrators led by former MLA Pranat Pal Singh walked up to the collectorate today where they submitted a charter of demands.

The (constable’s) next of kin should be paid compensation of Rs 50 lakh while two members of his family should be given government jobs,” Singh said, sharing some of the other demands.

US national alleges gang-rape in Manali

A 30-year-old US national Tuesday alleged that she was gang-raped by three men in this Himachal Pradesh tourist resort, police said.

Police have constituted a special team to investigate. The woman reached Manali, some 250 km from the state capital Shimla, Monday.

The victim lodged a complaint with police that she was picked up by the men, aged between 18 and 25 years, in a commercial vehicle when she was going back to her guest house after visiting a friend early Tuesday, Superintendent of Police Vinod Dhawan told IANS.

358th Urs of emperor Shah Jahan from June 5-7

The 358th annual ‘Urs’ celebrations of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan is all set to begin at Taj Mahal tomorrow with a host of programmes lined up as part of the three-day event here.

Elaborate arrangements have been made to mark the occasion with poetry reading and a qawwali recital among the highlights of the celebrations this year.

The Urs will also see a giant ‘chadar’ being placed on the Mughal emperor’s tomb on June 7.

It is learnt that entry to Taj Mahal will be free from June 5-7, the three days of the Urs.

Muslim religious leaders condemn Holocaust deniers

Muslim religious leaders and scholars from around the globe have issued a joint statement condemning any attempts to deny or justify the Holocaust in which six million European Jews perished under Nazi Germany.

“We bear witness to the absolute horror and tragedy of the Holocaust where millions upon millions of human souls perished, more than half of whom were people of the Jewish faith,” said a statement signed by 10 leading Islamic figures including President of the Islamic Society of North America, Imam Mohamed Magid and India’s Chief Imam, Umer Ahmed Ilyasi.

Sacked Andhra minister again targets chief minister

Former Andhra health minister D.L. Ravindra Reddy Tuesday said the reason for his sacking by Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy was not clear.

DL, as Ravindra Reddy is popularly known, was in London when he was dismissed by the chief minister June 1.

A bitter critic of the chief minister, he returned Monday night. Talking to reporters Tuesday outside the office of Congress Legislature Party (CLP), he launched a scathing attack on Kiran Kumar Reddy.

Andhra reconstitutes women’s commission

After a gap of five years, Andhra Pradesh Monday re-constituted the state women’s commission.

Former state minister and social activist Tripurana Venkataratnam will be the chairperson.

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy also appointed six other women as members of the panel.

The members are Paruchuri Jamuna, Sunita Krishnan, Thoti Malleswari, Mukala Kasturi and L. Feroz Begum.

The Scheduled Tribe category member would be nominated separately, said an official statement.

APPSC is Pro-Seemandhra, Says KTR

Senior TRS leader and Sircilla MLA K. Tarakarama Rao has alleged that the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) has transformed into pro-Seemandhra organization.

Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, KTR demanded that the State government implement Presidential Order and Zonal System in the appointments in government departments.

Refuting the allegations that the TRS was anti-Dalit, KTR said if the allegation was true, senior Dalit leaders like G. Vivekanand, Manda Jagannatham and Kadiam Srihari would not have joined the TRS. (NSS)

CM asks banks to issue input subsidy without links to previous dues

The Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy today asked the bankers to issue the input subsidy to farmers without any link to previous dues or adjustments. He said the input subsidy is the capital for next crop as far as famers are concerned and the State Government has substantially increased the input subsidy. He said banks will have to substantially increase the loans for self-employment since the State Government decided to provide self-employment to 6 lakhs youth with Rs.2,000 crs.

EU slaps anti-dumping duties on Chinese solar panels

The European Union (EU) Tuesday decided to impose provisional anti-dumping duties on imports of Chinese solar panels, cells and wafers, Xinhua reported.

EU imports of Chinese solar products would be subject to a punitive duty of 11.8 per cent from June 6 to Aug 6, from when on, the duty will be raised to 47.6 per cent, EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said at a press conference.

Sharif submits nomination papers for Pakistan PM’s position

Nawaz Sharif, whose party emerged victorious in the general elections, Tuesday submitted nomination papers to contest for the position of Pakistan’s prime minister.

The National Assembly, the lower house of the parliament in the country, will elect the new prime minister Wednesday following the May 11 general elections, reported Xinhua.

Sharif’s name was proposed by Chief of Pakhtunkhawa Milli Awami Party Mahmoud Khan Achakzai, an ally of the PML (N), and some party leaders.
