BJP opposes Delhi University four-year undergraduate programme

Disapproving the Delhi University’s four-year undergraduate programme, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday sought an explanation from the UGC and the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre on this issue.

BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said that the government should make it clear why the three-year programme is being switched off -even though it is a good system.

He pointed out that the four-year programme is limited to only one university.

“Is it a pilot project. So, the government must come clean on this issue,” asked Javadekar.

India off to rollicking start in ICC Champions Trophy encounter with South Africa

India got off to a rollicking start in the inaugural match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 against South Africa here on Thursday, scoring 178 for one of 30 overs, after South Africa asked India to bat first in overcast conditions.

Indian opener Rohit Sharma scored 65 before being caught at square leg of the bowling of Ryan McLaren. His partner Shikhar Dhawan was batting on 89, and has been joined at the crease by one-drop Virat Kohli, who is batting on 15, when reports last came in.

Direct link between E-mails and office stress: Loughborough Study

A unique study by Loughborough University (UK) has found a direct link between workplace stress and email use. The research by Professor Tom Jackson, Dr Gillian Ragsdell, and Laura Marulanda-Carter explored the physiological and psychological impact of email on employees.

It tracked the blood pressure, heart rate and cortisol levels amongst a group of 30 staff, as well as paper-based diaries kept by the participants.

Kundra confesses to betting, say Delhi Police

Rajasthan Royals’ owner Raj Kundra has admitted to indulging in betting and placed bets on his own team, Delhi Police claimed today as it confiscated his passport to ensure that he does not leave the country during investigations into the IPL spot-fixing scandal.

Kundra, a British national, was questioned for 11 hours yesterday after cricketer Sidharth Trivedi told police that Kundra’s business partner-friend Umesh Goenka used to ask for information regarding team formation and pitches.

Minor blind girl raped, killed in Puri

A visually challenged minor girl was allegedly raped and killed by miscreants who forcibly took her to forest at Beladala village here in the district, police said today.

The incident took place last night when the 13-year-old blind girl was sleeping outside her house due to gruelling heat. Her body was recovered from a jungle area near their house, police said.

The victim, a student of a Bhubaneswar based blind school, had come to her village in summer vacation, said Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dilip Das.

Gujarat results reflect ground reality: Naqvi

The BJP said Thursday that its sweeping victory in Gujarat, where it wrested all six Lok Sabha and state assembly seats from the Congress, reflected the ground reality.

Speaking to the media, BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi made fun of the “Bharat Nirman” advertising blitzkrieg as an imaginary bubble created by the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

Naqvi was speaking ahead of a three-day meeting of the party’s national office bearers and national executive.

Temple issue not a priority at BJP national executive: Naqvi

The contentious issue of building a Ram temple at Ayodhya will not be on the BJP’s priority list when its leaders converge in Goa for the national executive meeting, party spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said here Thursday.

Naqvi was speaking to reporters at the party’s state headquarters in Panaji ahead of the three-day conclave which gets underway Friday.

Man sentenced to life term for raping teenaged girl

A local court sentenced a man to life imprisonment and imposed a penalty of Rs 1.14 lakh on him for enticing and raping a teenaged girl.

In January 2010, the victim’s father lodged an FIR at Sadar police station against the accused Bunty for enticing his 15-year-old daughter and raping her, additional district government counsel Gyan Swaroop Gupta said.

After hearing both the parties additional district judge (six) S N Tripathi held Bunty guilty yesterday, he said.

The court ordered that 70 per cent of the penalty amount should be given to the victim.

Man acquitted of charge of raping deaf and dumb woman

A man, accused of raping a deaf and dumb woman who later gave birth to his child, has been acquitted by a Delhi court which noted the victim’s statement that physical relations were established with her consent.

Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna acquitted Noida resident Suraj, saying that as per the DNA reports, he is the father of the woman’s child and if she had supported the police version, it could have nailed the accused.

Teenager assaulted by Army jawan; dies

A 19-year-old youth, who was allegedly kicked in the stomach by an Army jawan in Rajouri district, has died of his injuries, police said today.
The deceased, identified as Rakesh Kumar, a native of Kewal Budhal area, was allegedly assaulted by Ajay earlier, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Rajouri, Mubasir Latifi said.
“Three days back, the boy was kicked in the stomach by the accused following which he was rushed to a hospital. His parents did not file a complaint that time. However, his condition deteriorated and he was referred to Jammu.

Another body recovered from Kashmir gunfight site

Security forces Thursday recovered another body from the site of the gunfight in south Kashmir Pulwama district, and army sources said the second slain guerrilla could be a foreign national.

Security forces Wednesday killed the self-styled divisional commander of the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) guerrilla outfit in Ichgosa village of Pulwama district. While the gunfight ended Wednesday evening, searches by security forces at the site only started Thursday morning.

NASA plans to launch satellite to explore Sun

Preparations are underway for the June 26 launch of the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, or IRIS, to explore the sun’s lower atmosphere, or interface region, NASA said.

“The interface region, located between the sun’s visible surface and upper atmosphere, is where most of the sun’s ultraviolet emission is generated,” NASA said in a statement.

The IRIS mission will be equipped with an ultraviolet telescope designed to capture images at short intervals.

Three held in Manali gang-rape were Nepalis, say police

All the three accused in the gang-rape of a 30-year-old US national in this Himachal Pradesh tourist resort, who were arrested early Thursday, were Nepali nationals, police said.

The three arrested people are all truck drivers, identified as Arjun, Lucky and Som Bahadur, Superintendent of Police Vinod Dhawan told IANS.

He said that although they were Nepali nationals, they had been living in the state for a long time.

“Two of them were arrested from Patlikuhl (20 km before Manali) and one from Mandi town,” Dhawan added.
