President Putin, wife announce divorce

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his wife Lyudmila announced Thursday on national television that their marriage was over, ending years of media speculation about the couple’s relationship.

They have been married for under 30 years.

“Yes, you could say this is a civilised divorce,” Lyudmila said in response to a journalist’s question, following the Putins’ joint outing to a ballet performance – the first time they had been seen in public since the president’s inauguration in May 2012.

Russia approves visa-free travel with Paraguay

Russia is set to sign a visa-free travel agreement with Paraguay, according to a document published on the government’s website Thursday.

“The agreement establishes visa-free travel for trips of 90 days or less for every period of 180 days for owners of valid passports,” the government said.

The statement, however, did not say when the agreement would be signed.

UAE, Germany discuss bilateral relations

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Germany have discussed their bilateral relations and explored ways to further strengthen them.

The talks were held here Thursday between UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash and Christoph Heusgen, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s foreign and security policy advisor, in the presence aof UAE ambassador to Germany Juma Mubarak Al Junaibi.

Modi addresses teachers through video link

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today addressed more then 2.2 lakh teachers in the state through video conference and urged them to be teachers in real sense and inspire children.

“A teacher who is only waiting for the bell to end the day can never shape minds. But a teacher who thinks about the pupil, the pupil’s future, is the true teacher,” Modi said in his address after inaugurating a five-day training program under ‘Sarva Shikhsa Abhiyan’ for the primary teachers.

Man consumes insecticide, commits suicide at TRS meeting

A pro-Telangana agitator on Thursday ended his life by consuming insecticide at a Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) meeting in Manthani town of Karimnagar district, police said.

As TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao was addressing the meeting, Gunda Nagaraju (32) of Surayyapalli village of Manthani mandal, all of a sudden, tried to board the dais, but partymen stopped him.

Nagaraju immediately went behind the dais and consumed insecticide raising the slogan “Jai Telangana”.

AP boy tops JIPMER entrance exam

Kunal Ramesh Chandekar from Andhra Pradesh has topped the entrance examination for MBBS course in the prestigious Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research here.

Institute’s Dean K S Reddy said Chandekar, who hails from Secunderabad, scored highest marks among the 52,298 candidates by getting 174 out of 200.

He is followed by Hemnath Amardeep Santhoor of Bangalore and T N C Pranav of Hyderabad, with both scoring 172 marks.

Bayee Swapna from West Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh scored highest marks with 161 in the category of Scheduled Caste candidates.

Delhi power demand rises to all-time high

The demand for electricity in the capital rose to an unprecedented high of 5,653 MW Thursday, said a Delhi government official.

The earlier highest peak demand was 5,642 MW July 5, 2012.

“The demand of 5,653 MW was successfully met without any obstacle. Delhi government has directed DISCOMs to ensure uninterrupted power supply,” he added.

Opposed to any dialogue with Maoists: RSS chief

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) today said that no dialogue should be held with the outlawed Maoists who carried out a deadly attack recently in Chhattisgarh against Congress party leaders.

Even tribals living in forests are fed up with Maoist violence,” said RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, who was also critical of those who supported the ultras.

He was speaking at the concluding ceremony of RSS’s third year training camp here at Reshimbagh grounds.

Centre returns Mamata government’s bill against Ponzi funds

The centre has returned to the West Bengal government the Bill passed by the state assembly in April to rein in ponzi firms.

Sources said the central government asked the state to correct a provision related to giving retrospective effect to the bill.

Queen Elizabeth’s husband hospitalised

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, has been admitted to hospital for an exploratory operation, Buckingham Palace said.

He will turn 92 next week.

He was admitted to the London Clinic “following abdominal investigations” and expected to stay in the hospital for up to two weeks, BBC reported Thursday.

The operation will take place Friday under general anaesthetic. It is a planned, not an emergency, admittance, it added.

Terrorists at Turkey demos: Erdogan

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan today said that members of a “terrorist organisation” were taking part in deadly anti-government protests sweeping Turkey and refused to cancel a controversial Istanbul development
plan that sparked them.

He said seven foreigners implicated in the unrest had been arrested.

Among the protesters, there are extremists, some of them implicated in terrorism,” Erdogan told reporters in Tunis, on the final day of a north African tour that has been overshadowed by the unrest back home.

Emergency BCCI meeting to discus Raj Kundra issue

An emergency working committee meeting of the Indian cricket board will be held June 10 to discuss the issue of Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra’s allegedly involvement in betting in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“An emergency working committee of the board has been called in Delhi June 10 at 11 a.m.,” Board of Control for Cricket in India interim chief Jagmohan Dalmiya said here Thursday.

The committee will discuss the Raj Kundra issue.

“We will hear all the details. And if it demands any strict action, we will look into it,” Dalmiya said.

RIL to invest Rs.150,000 crore over 3 years

Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) will invest Rs.150,000 crore over the next three years to expand its manufacturing, retail and 4G digital services, Chairman Mukesh Ambani said here Thursday.

He said the above said sectors have “high multiplier effects” and would lead to “secondary and tertiary economic investments and employment creation in a variety of sectors”.

Kunda DSP murder case: CBI wants to put Raja Bhaiya through lie detector test

Lucknow, June 6 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday sought permission from a special court for conducting a lie detection test on former Uttar Pradesh minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya in connection with the murder of Kunda Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Zia-ul-Haque.

The CBI reportedly wants to collect more evidence against Raja Bhaiya, one of the key accused in the case.

Raja Bhaiya was grilled by the CBI last month for over 20 hours, spread over a span of two days, but no credible evidence could be found to seek his custody.

Babies in womb practice frowning to prepare for pain after birth

London, June 6 (ANI): A new study by researchers at Durham and Lancaster University has revealed that babies practice frowning in the womb so that they can show when they are unhappy after birth.

Analysis of stark images captured using a 4D scanner suggest unborn babies grimace and pull faces to prepare for being in pain after birth, according to the researchers.

The scans of 15 healthy babies also revealed that they develop from making simple expressions such as smiling at 24 weeks to much more complex pain expressions at 36 weeks, the Mirror reported.

Miss World axes bikinis this year
