The move from the South Asian country comes after the controversial opening of an office in Doha by the insurgent group that deadlocked efforts for talks in Afghanistan.

A Pakistani official told Dawn News that negotiators were talking to the Taliban leadership to persuade them to get on with the talks with the Americans and the Afghan government.

MP govt employees donate for Uttarakhand victims

Gas price hiked due to low domestic output: Chidambaram

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram Friday said the government was forced to almost double the gas prices due to low domestic output and difficult macroeconomic situation.

“Decline in domestic production is resulting in rise in import of LNG. We have to produce more gas,” Chidambaram said while addressing a media conference here.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday approved a proposal to hike gas price for the first time in three years.

Sex video official sentenced to jail in China

A former official embroiled in a sex video scandal was sentenced to 13 years in jail for bribery Friday in southwest China’s Chongqing city.

Lei Zhengfu, former secretary of Chongqing’s Beibei District Committee of the Communist Party of China, was also fined 300,000 yuan ($48,550), according to a Chongqing No.1 Intermediate People’s Court ruling.

Lei said he would consider whether or not to appeal after the trial, reported Xinhua.

The 55-year-old was found to have appeared in a sex video that was posted online in November.

A new experimental ‘ anti-social’ web app has been designed which can help users to utilize FourSquare to track their friends’ check-ins and provide alternative routes to avoid them.

The app called as ‘Hell Is Other People’ has been designed by Scott Garner, a master’s degree candidate in the interactive telecommunications program at NYU who got the idea out of his own social anxiety, ABC News reports.

Garner also got the idea from a presentation FourSquare co-founder Dennis Crowley made about FourSquare’s early beginnings.

US military to review cyber crime dealing rules in face of increased threat

The US military has decided to review its rules of dealing with cyber related crimes in light of the soaring cyber attacks.

Military chief Martin Dempsey said that the decision has been taken in light of the rising cyber crimes and the Department of Defence has developed emergency procedures to guide their response to imminent, significant cyber threat, News 24 reports.

Pak govt denies initiating action against Musharraf in treason case

The Pakistan Government had not initiated any action against former president Pervez Musharraf, but had merely submitted its reply to the Supreme Court, minister for Information and broadcasting has said.

Pervaiz Rashid said the government would fulfill its obligations under the Constitution.

He added that the law of the land would take its own course and the government would fully cooperate with the courts.

According to the Daily Times, he called apprehensions of former army chief General (retired) Aslam Baig regarding the proposed trial of Musharraf as baseless.

One more dies in Manipur bomb explosion

One more person injured in Thursday’s powerful bomb blast at Uripok Tourangbam Leikai area in Imphal West district has died, police said.

The person, identified as Ranjan Mahanto (35), succumbed to injuries last night, they said. With this, the number of people killed in the blast has climbed to two.

Unidentified miscreants exploded a powerful grenade at the house of Ningthoujam Priyoshakhi (80) at Uripok here at around 8 PM last night, killing a person Rohitkumar Das (28), and injuring four others seriously.

Abu Salem treated for bullet injury, back in cell

Gangster Abu Salem, who was shot at inside the Taloja Central Jail (TCJ) on Thursday, returned to his cell on Friday morning after being treated for a bullet injury, a police official said.

“He was admitted and treated at the MGM Hospital, Vashi last (Thursday) evening and kept there overnight. The accused has been transferred back to TCJ this morning. There is no cause for any concern on his health condition,” a senior police official, preferring not to be identified, said.

Police books MIM MLA for alleged remarks about Gandhi statue

The police booked a case against All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (MIM) MLA Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Mahatma Gandhi’s statue inside the state assembly here.

Based on a local court directive, the L.B. Nagar police registered a case against Quadri, who represents the Charminar assembly constituency under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Deputy Commissioner of Police (L.B. Nagar Zone) C. Ravi Varma said.
