Men in burqas rob London’s famous Selfridges store

Six men, reportedly dressed in burqas, and armed with axes have carried out a Hollywood-style “smash-and-grab” robbery at one of London’s most iconic department stores and made off with a number of high value
watches.

According to Scotland Yard, the robbers, smashed glass cabinets at the Selfridges department store to steal high value watches.

The group of men fled the shop and are reported to have made their getaway on mopeds and motorbikes, ridden by associates.

Two suspects were later arrested when they came off a moped and members of the public stopped them fleeing.

Allahabad High Court questions Akhilesh Yadav”s poll promise to withdraw terror cases

The Allahabad High Court has questioned Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his government”s move to withdraw terror charges against those falsely implicated in such cases.

The court urged the state government to first check with the central government before taking the decision to withdraw the cases, as most anti-terror laws have been conceived and passed by the latter.

The state government is due to reply to the Lucknow bench of the court today.

25pc men under 40 suffer from newly-diagnosed erectile dysfunction

A new study has found that one in four men seeking medical help for newly-developed erectile dysfunction (ED) was younger than 40 years, and nearly half of young men with the condition had severe ED.

While larger population-based studies are needed, the findings suggest that erectile dysfunction in young men may be more prevalent and more serious than previously thought.

Erectile dysfunction is a common complaint in men over 40 years of age.

Kunda DSP murder case: Raja Bhaiya not named in second chargesheet

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday filed its second chargesheet in the murder case of Kunda Deputy Superintendent of Police Zia-ul-Haque, but did not name former Uttar Pradesh minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya in it.

On Thursday, the CBI had sought permission from a Lucknow court to carry out a lie detection test on Raja Bhaiya in connection with the killing of Zia-ul-Haq three months back.

Spl police force to tackle terror, hardcore criminals in UP

Uttar Pradesh police will now have specialised units in every district to tackle terror activities and counter hardened criminals.

It has been decided to set up Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams in every district of the state which will be part of the crime branches of the police,” IG (law and order) R K Vishwakarma told reporters here.

He said the SWAT teams will have personnel trained in commando operations.

Fake encounter:SC refuses to quash FIR against Guj IPS officer

The Supreme Court today made it clear to a senior IPS officer, facing arrest in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, that it will not quash the FIR lodged against him and others following directions from the Gujarat High Court.

“We are unanimous that quashing part cannot be entertained. We will not quash the FIR… It will not be
appropriate to deal with it,” a bench comprising justices Gyan Sudha Misra and Madan B Lokur said.

“This prayer cannot be entertained in a petition filed under Article 32 (of the Constitution which provides remedies to enforce fundamental rights),” it said.

Indian woman’s body in Saudi Arabia morgue for two months

The body of a 51-year-old Indian housemaid, who died more than two months ago, is still lying unclaimed in a morgue in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh.

Saraswathy Kalappara died March 28 in King Fahd Medical City and the post-mortem report cited “cardio-respiratory arrest due to illness of unknown etiology” as the reason.

Her two sons and legal heirs then sent a power of attorney to the Indian embassy April 1, authorising it to do whatever was needed to repatriate their mother’s body to India, the Arab News reported Friday.

Can’t arrest Raj Kundra on suspicion: Delhi Police

Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar Friday said Indian Premier League (IPL) team Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra cannot be arrested as they do not have any material evidence against him.

“Kundra has admitted of his involvement in some betting or some games of chance. But there is no evidence to support his disclosure. Without supportive evidence, we cannot arrest anyone on the ground of suspicion,” Kumar said.

The Delhi Police chief also said they needed some “material evidence” against Kundra.

The findings are published in the journal NeuroImage. A new study has found more evidence that breastfeeding is good for the baby’s brain.

The study by researchers from Brown University, made use of specialized, baby-friendly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to look at the brain growth in a sample of children under the age of 4.

Not opposed to Food Bill, want discussion in Parl: Pawar

Making it clear that he was not opposed to the National Food Security Bill, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar Friday said he would prefer it to be approved by Parliament after a debate.

“I am in favour of approving the food bill through discussion in Parliament, which is the highest forum,” he told reporters.

Pawar, who had earlier voiced apprehension that huge concessions on foograins could endanger food security and harm the interests of farmers, said everybody in the government wanted it to be “cleared, approved and implemented.”

CIC ‘exceeded its brief’ under RTI Act: CPI(M)

Launching a fresh attack on the CIC over its order to treat political parties as “public authorities”, CPI(M) Friday said it had “exceeded its brief” under the RTI Act and sought changes in the law on the issue.

“CIC has exceeded its brief under the RTI Act by setting out a new definition of political parties. When Parliament adopted the Right to Information Act in 2005, which was supported by CPI(M) too, the intention was not to bring political parties as ‘public authorities’ under its purview.

PM is right, politics and sports should not be mixed: Pawar

NCP president Sharad Pawar on Friday endorsed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s view that politics and sports should not be mixed, saying he never did it during his long association with sports bodies.

“I have been associated with sports for many years but never brought politics into sport. Prime Minister is right when he says that politics should not be mixed with sports,” he told a news conference.

Pawar was asked to comment on the raging spot-fixing and betting controversy which has rocked Indian Premier League with even team owners coming under a cloud.
