PM condoles death of Chidambaram’s mother

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday condoled the demise of Lakshmi Palaniappan, the mother of Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

“I am very sorry to learn about the passing away of your mother. This is an irreparable loss in which words are scant comfort,” Singh said in his condolence message to Chidambaram.

“My deepest prayers are with you in this hour of grief,” he said.

Chidambaram’s 92-year-old mother, who was unwell for the past few days, breathed her last at her residence in Chennai on Friday morning.

Writing in the prestigious journal Cell, the researchers contend that by understanding and combating aging we can also fight cancer and other diseases of most incidence in the developed world.

Temperatures drop in North India after rains

Mercury dropped slightly on Friday at most places across North India after Thursday’s rains, even as hot and humid conditions persisted in the region.

Maximum temperature came down in the national capital to settle a notch below normal at 39.3 degrees against yesterday’s 43.6 degrees Celsius, but the humidity settled at 77 per cent.

Rains led to a dip in mercury in Rajasthan also, where the monsoon is likely to arrive three-four days in advance as per a MeT department forecast.

Churu was the hottest place in the state with a high of 47 degrees.

New Delhi, June 7(ANI): ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ has become the first film to enter 100 crore club in a week as expected by the film pandits.

The movie bagged Rs 19.45 crore on the first day itself, and then earned Rs 65 crore in the first weekend.

Hawks, eagles, attack US Army”s new realistic robotic bird drone

Washington, June 7 (ANI): A robotic bird created for the US Army for being used as a miniature spy drone is so convincing that it has been attacked by hawks and eagles, according to researchers. The solar-powered, remotely piloted surveillance aircraft, called Robo-Raven, was designed and built at the University of Maryland”s Maryland Robotics Center, reports the Washington Times.

Don’t have money to pay salary dues of KFA staff: Mallya

Kingfisher Airlines chairman Vijay Mallya on Friday told his agitating employees, who began a hunger strike, that he did not have money to clear their salary dues.

“I don’t have the money to pay your salary dues, because I cannot use the proceeds from the United Spirits-Diageo deal for this due to an injunction from the Karnataka High Court,” Mr. Mallya reportedly told the striking employees.

The employees of the grounded airline have been on a hunger-strike since Thursday at the Kingfisher House here seeking salaries which have not been paid since last August.

Chinese police tell women to shun mini skirts, hot pants to prevent sexual abuse on buses

Beijing, June 7 (ANI): Beijing police and public transport authorities have published a guideline to prevent the sexual harassment of passengers on buses and subways. Experts, however, doubt it will solve the problem at its root. The guideline, published by the traffic department under the Beijing Public Security Bureau, says women should not wear minimal clothing, such as mini skirts or hot pants when taking public transportation and should call police promptly if they are sexually harassed, reports China Daily.

Indian workers in Saudi Arabia claim they were duped

Nearly 200 Indians in Saudi Arabia have accused two Bangladeshi labour-recruiting agents of duping them and forcing them to do menial jobs at various industrial locations where they were threatened by bosses.

They approached Indian officials in Dammam yesterday with a fraud complaint. The workers alleged that a recruitment
agent in Mumbai had promised them skilled jobs in Al-Babtain Plastic Factory in Dammam, the Arab News reported.

Washington, June 7 (ANI): A man from Nashville has admitted to fathering 22 kids by 14 women.

The man in the middle of one of Metro’s most expensive child support cases, Orlando Shaw, has said that he was young and ambitious and loves women.

The woman who gave birth to his kids took the 33-year-old to court for tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid child support over the years.

It is estimated that the state pays more than 7,000 dollars each month in assistance to help support Shaw’s kids, NewsChannel5 reported.

20 killed as bus falls into gorge

At least 20 people were today killed and several others injured when a bus plunged into a 500 ft deep gorge in remote Sangrah area of Sirmaur district, 200 km from here, police said.

Eighteen persons, including eight women died on the spot while two succumbed to injuries, they said, adding the injured have been hospitalised in Rajgarh, Solan and Shimla.

This is the second major accident in the state in less than a month.

The private bus carrying around 35 passengers was on its way from Punradhar to Solan when the the mishap took place.

Michael Jackson’s daughter Paris, who attempted to commit suicide early on Wednesday, had a vicious family fight on Tuesday where she screamed that she wished that her father was there, as he understood her, according to reports.

A source told the Sun that Paris believes that no one in the Jackson family understood her any more and it made her feel isolated and alone.

Man arrested with suspicious substance

One person was arrested today for being in possession of a suspicious substance, which police said was an intoxicant.

SP Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh said that the accused, identified as one Mandip Singh, was apprehended with 100-gm of
the alleged contraband during a routine check here.

He was booked under various sections of the narcotics Act, Khakh added.

A judge has revealed that he was inclined to unseal portions of a choreographer’s court filings alleging he was abused by Michael Jackson.

Superior Court Judge, Mitchell Beckloff, said that it was essential to address which records should remain sealed before he can deal with whether choreographer and television personality, Wade Robson, can pursue his claim, Fox News reported.

Marilyn Monroe’s 3,700 unpublished images and a treasure trove of photos of movie icons Steve Mcqueen, Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor will go under the hammer in Los Angeles next month.

Named as ‘the most important archive of iconic 20th century glamour and fashion photography’, the collection of the famous fashion photographer Milton H. Greene will be sold with copyright on 27th July, Contactmusic reported.

Indian woman’s body in Saudi morgue for two months

The body of a 51-year-old Indian housemaid, who died more than two months ago due to illness, is still lying unclaimed in a morgue in Riyadh as authorities have not been able to complete the necessary formalities to repatriate the body.

Saraswathy Kalappara from Kerala died on March 28 in King Fahd Medical City and the post-mortem report cited “cardio-respiratory arrest due to illness of unknown etiology”as the reason.

Jagan DA case: CBI seeks judicial custody of Sabitha and Dharmana

Hyderabad, : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday sought the judicial custody of former Andhra Pradesh ministers P Sabitha Indra Reddy and Dharmana Prasad Rao in connection with the alleged disproportionate assets case against Y S R Congress chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy.

Permission for custody was sought from a special CBI court on charges that former state Home Minister Sabitha Reddy and former Roads and Buildings Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao were making statements before the media that they were innocent and would come out of the case.

DA case: CBI court extends Jagan’s custody

Former Andhra Pradesh Home Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy, YSR Congress chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and others on Friday appeared before a special CBI court in connection with the case relating to alleged quid-pro-quo investments in Kadapa MP Jagan’s companies.

The court extended the judicial custody of Jagan and his financial advisor V Vijay Sai Reddy till June 21 and posted the case to the same date while directing all the accused to again appear before it.

Pak troops violate ceasefire, one Indian soldier killed in Poonch

Jammu, June 7 (ANI): Pakistan troops violated the ceasefire again on Friday.

Troops from across the border opened fire in Mandi area of Poonch sector and killed one Indian soldier, television reports said.

The reports said that the violation of the cease-fire was an attempt to facilitate an infiltration bid.
