Girl injured as drunk man throws acid on her

An eight-year-old girl suffered burn injuries after a man allegedly threw acid on her, while she was begging at Jagatgirigutta area of the city here on Friday, police said.

According to police, the accused Narasimha, was in a drunken state when the incident took place.

When the minor girl, who is dumb, came to Narasimha seeking alms, he threw acid on her, they said.

The girl, who sustained burn injuries on her back and legs in the incident, was taken to a nearby hospital, police said, adding, she was in a stable condition.

SC refuses to quash FIR against Guj IPS officer

The Supreme Court on Friday made it clear to a senior IPS officer, facing arrest in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, that it will not quash the FIR lodged against him and others following directions from the Gujarat High Court.

“We are unanimous that quashing part cannot be entertained. We will not quash the FIR… It will not be appropriate to deal with it,” a bench comprising justices Gyan Sudha Misra and Madan B Lokur said.

Indian Premier League (IPL) team Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra has said that he is innocent, even as the franchise sought to distance itself from him and threatened to suspend him and forfeit his shares if found guilty in the spot fixing and betting scandal.

I’m far from perfect: Sonakshi Sinha

Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha has said that she feels that she is far from the perfect. The actress feels that being perfect is boring and wants to continue to grow with every film.

Sonakshi, who is known for the hit films like “Rowdy Rathore” and “Dabangg”, said at the music launch of her film “Lootera”: “I am far from perfect. I regard perfect as boring,” she said held here Friday.

The film has been directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and stars Sonakshi and Ranveer Kapoor.

The Congress Friday took a dig at Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, whose presence at the BJP national executive in Goa possibly contributed to the absence of senior party leaders, saying he was like a “virus”.

“It seems a strange virus called Namonitis has affected their senior leaders,” Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury told reporters when asked for the party’s response on the absence of senior BJP leaders, including BJP veteran L.K. Advani, from its three-day conclave in Goa.

Congress core group discusses food bill, Telangana

The Congress core committee met here Friday to discuss ways to pass the National Food Security Bill, which is stuck in parliament, said party sources.

According to party sources, the core committee, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party chief Sonia Gandhi, will meet again next week to further review the issue.

The core group discussed whether to bring an ordinance or to debate the bill in parliament.

Amused at KCR’S Remark: Dilip Kumar

TRLD leader Dilip Kumar has said he was amused over the TRS chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao’s remark that they would wrest separate State even by winning just 15 Lok Sabha seats in the ensuing general elections.
Speaking to the media here on Friday, Dilip Kumar said even if the TRS managed to win 17 seats, it will be difficult to get Telangana State. Delhi Police seek open NBWs for Dawood, Chhota Shakeel

Delhi Police Friday moved an application before a city court seeking open non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel in connection with the IPL spot fixing case.

“It has come to our notice that the main bookies and fixers were in touch with Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel… They gave directions to bookies and fixers in India…,” the special cell of Delhi Police said in the application filed before Additional Sessions Judge Vinay Kumar Khanna.

The matter has been posted for hearing on June 10.

Not in delhi to plead for HM portfolio: Rajanarasimha

Deputy Chief Minister C. Damodar Rajanarasimha has made it clear that he did not come to Delhi to plead for Home Minister portfolio.

Speaking to the media before emplaning for Hyderabad on Friday, Rajanarasimha said he would apply his mind whether to accept Home Minister portfolio or not if the party high command offered the post to him. He also made it clear that there was no political importance to his meetings with party high priests.

Rashtriya Lok Dal to contest AP local body, LS polls

Union Minister Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) would contest the upcoming local body polls in Andhra Pradesh and subsequent general elections.

“We are going to contest these local body elections, as well as parliamentary and assembly elections,” he told reporters on Friday.

The number of seats on which the party will contest would be decided by its local unit, he clarified.

Reiterating RLD’s support for the separate statehood demand, Mr. Singh said even his father late Charan Singh had favoured formation of smaller states.

NCP ministers resign ahead of cabinet reshuffle

All 20 Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ministers in the Maharashtra cabinet on Friday submitted their resignations to the party leadership amid reports of a large-scale reshuffle both at the government and party level.

Among those putting in their papers were Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Public Works Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, Home Minister RR Patil and Rural Development Minister Jayant Patil.

Sources said that the move should be seen in the light of NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s recent directions to party leaders asking them to prepare for next year’s Lok Sabha elections.

20 die as bus falls into gorge

At least 20 people were on Friday killed and several others injured when a bus plunged into a 500 ft deep gorge in remote Sangrah area of Sirmaur district, 200 km from here, police said.

Eighteen persons, including eight women died on the spot while two succumbed to injuries, they said. The injured have been hospitalised in Rajgarh, Solan and Shimla.

This is the second major accident in the state in less than a month.

The private bus carrying around 35 passengers was on its way from Punradhar to Solan when the accident took place.

14 Indian sailors safe as EU, NATO ships thwart pirate attack

Fourteen Indian sailors on a hijacked cargo vessel have been safely rescued as Somali pirates on board the ship fled after counter piracy ships from the EU and NATO launched a mission in the Gulf of Aden following an SOS message.

“Fourteen Indian sailors are now safe, after pirates, who took control of their cargo vessel on June 5 in the Gulf of Aden, abandoned the attack hours later after EU Naval Force warship HSwMS Carlskrona, together with NATO counter piracy Dutch warship HNLMS Van Speijk, closed in,” the EU Naval Force said in a statement.

Man kept chained by sister for 20 years, rescued

A man, allegedly kept in captivity by his sister at her house for at least 20 years, has been rescued by police in Haveri district of Karnataka on Friday.

Hanumantappa Kyapannavar, in his late forties, was found chained by his sister Durgavva when police visited their house at Belur village following a tip off.

The man’s hair was unkempt and had covered himself with just a long piece of cloth, said Haveri SP Chetan Singh Rathore.

UP CM Akhilesh pitches National Health Insurance Scheme for poor

Lucknow, June 7 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday anounced a scheme for providing medical aid to the poor at subsidised rates.

Yadav, who made the announcement of launching the the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) at a press conference here, said that his government has always worked for welfare of the poor.

Government sets up National Skill Development Agency

Women in Kanpur chant hymns, plough fields to please rain god

Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), June 7 (ANI): Women are ploughing dry fields and chanting hymns to please the god of rain in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Temperatures in the region have been steadily increasing and locals say the heat is unbearable.

In Mardanpur village, women have adopted the traditional method of pleasing the rain god.

Archana said that according to Hindu mythology, if one prays to Lord Indra, the god of rain, he blesses the area with heavy showers.

Walmart helps US man find love

Washington, June 07 (ANI): A US man who visited Walmart to get the benefit of low prices there got more than he thought- he found his lady love in the store.

The couple met in a North Carolina Walmart and returned to the same store to hold their wedding ceremony, News24.com reported.

Wayne Brandenburg told the publication that he would casually browse through the store a few times a week and that was where he met his future wife, Susan, who was working there as a cashier.

Brandenburg was a widower, while Susan was working at the store after her divorce.
