Two flights to bring AP victims from Dehradun

Government of Andhra Pradesh has arranged two flights for today and tomorrow to transport the Uttarakhand flood victim pilgrims from Dehradun to Hyderabad.

One flight will leave Dehradun tonight at 11.15 pm. and the second flight leave tomorrow at 5.45 pm. in the evening.

1977 poll result guaranteed Indian democracy’s survival: Advani

The result of the 1977 general elections were “the biggest guarantee” that democracy would survive in India and ensured that no government would ever “dare” to misuse emergency powers, said BJP veteran L.K. Advani.

Ishrat case:MHA not convinced CBI has proof against IB officer

The Home Ministry is not convinced that the CBI has evidence to arrest or prosecute a top Intelligence Bureau officer in the conspiracy to carry out the fake encounter in which Ishrat Jahan and three others were killed in Gujarat nine years ago.

Won’t allow high-rises in Delhi as long as I’m alive: Dikshit

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today continued to oppose Union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath’s push for vertical growth in the city, saying she won’t allow construction of high-rise buildings as long as she is “alive”.

She has been opposing vertical expansion arguing that it will put additional stress on existing resources and infrastructure in the city besides severely impacting the ecology.

“I agree with you that eventually perhaps Delhi will need high-rise buildings. But it will not be allowed as long as I am alive,” she told a function organised by industry chamber Assocham.

Top Gujarat cop acted like Rambo in Ishrat encounter: CBI

Gujarat High Court today reserved till July 1 its order on a petition by top Gujarat police officer P P Pandey seeking quashing of an FIR filed against him in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case even as the CBI described him as the “mastermind” of the 2004 episode.

According to CBI, which is probing the case, Pandey, Additional DGP, acted like action hero Rambo in the entire operation. Ishrat, a 19-year-old Mumbai girl, and her three associates were gunned down by Ahmedabad Crime Branch, which had then claimed they were “terrorists”.

Shinde and Bahuguna honour soldiers killed in Uttarakhand chopper crash

Twenty soldiers, who lost their lives in Tuesday’s chopper crash while rescuing stranded people in flood-ravaged Uttarakhand, were given a ‘guard of honour’ in Dehradun today.

The 20 brave men-five from IAF, nine from NDRF and six from ITBP-were accorded the honour in the presence of Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and Army Chief General Bikram Singh at a ceremony in Dehradun.

Mohanty reviewed the progress of Metro Rail Project

Chief Secretary Dr. P K Mohanty conducted the Special Task Force (STF) meeting on Thursday late in the evening and reviewed the progress of Hyderabad Metro Rail project.

Making detailed presentation, HMR Managing Director NVS Reddy explained that the project is jetting ahead at a fast pace and so far 780 foundations (21 km), 625 pillars (17.5 km), 3,700 segments (sufficient for 11 km) have been completed and elevated viaduct has been erected over 4.5 km. He has mentioned that 70 per cent of Uppal depot works and 40 per cent of Miyapur depot works have also been completed.

Kerala ex-minister’s sex scandal gets murkier

The woman who alleges that a former Kerala minister and his son had repeatedly sexually exploited her said here Friday that she had handed over a laptop and a webcam that recorded their act to him.

The woman said that former Kerala transport minister Jose Thettayil and his elder son Adarsh had sex with her. She claims that Thettayil promised her that he would get his son married to her, but did not keep his word.

“I handed over the laptop and the webcam to him after he promised that his son would marry me,” the 30-year-old told TV news channels.

Delhi-Pune Duranto Express engine derails

A major disaster was averted when the engine of the Hazrat Nizamuddin-Pune Duranto Express derailed after it hit a boulder in the treacherous Western Ghats Friday morning, an official said.

Six wheels of the engine jumped off the tracks after the impact. The boulder had rolled down from the hills between Thakurwadi and Monkey Hill areas on the Kalyan-Lonavala section of Central Railway.

“There were no casualties. Other train services were not held up as a third alternative line was available and all trains were diverted to it,” a Central Railway official said.

Yeddyurappa adamant on not returning to BJP, lauds Modi

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran Lal Krishna Advani has lashed out at Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and advised him against using offensive language. “Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir state, has every right to disagree with the BJP on matters relating to J&K. Manipal gangrape accused sent to five-day police custody

A court here today remanded in five-days police custody one of the three accused arrested in connection with the abduction and gangrape of a 22-year old medical student from Kerala a week ago.

Hariprasad, arrested yesterday along with two other accomplices, was produced before the district court.

IGP (Western Range) Pratap Reddy said two other accused, Yogesh Shantappa Poojary and Anand were still in a hospital undergoing treatment after their alleged failed suicide bid fearing arrest.

Two jailed for 10 yrs for minor’s rape and abetment

A Delhi court has sentenced a man to 10-year imprisonment for raping a minor girl, besides handing the same jail term to the victim’s maternal aunt for abetting the crime.

Additional Session Judge M C Gupta also imposed a fine of Rs 12,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively on Delhi-resident Manoj Kumar and the victim’s maternal aunt.

The judge dismissed their contentions that they were falsely implicated, saying the girl’s testimony regarding the incident was “trustworthy”.

Omar’s comments on BJP’s Article 370 stance improper: Advani

Senior BJP leader L.K. Advani Friday advised Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah not to use words like “cheating” and “deceiving” for his party’s stance over the constitution’s Article 370, terming it “offensive” and “improper”.

He also contended that almost the entire Congress was also against the provision – granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir – when it was sought to be incorporated in the constitution. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been long seeking its abrogation.

Kerala withdraws ‘controversial’ circular on marriage age

The Kerala government Friday issued a new circular replacing an earlier one issued recently, clarifying that the marriageable age for Muslim girls is 18, and men 21.

The previous circular that raised a hue and cry directed the local self government authorities to register marriages of Muslim males aged below 21 and females aged below 18, but over 16, and issue them marriage certificates.
