Nearly 100 firms turn up for Indian job fair in Jeddah

Nearly 100 companies turned up on Thursday in search of Indian workers at a second job fair organized by the country’s consulate in Jeddah. The fair was held the spacious, air-conditioned auditorium of the International Indian School (IISJ) in Rehab district.

Between 1,700 and 2,000 Indian workers registered their names at the fair in their bid to find new employers taking advantage of the amnesty period that is set to expire on July 3, said Consul Labor Prabhat K. Jain.

Two get death penalty for rape, murder of teenager

A local court today awarded capital punishment to two men for kidnapping, raping and killing a 19-year-old girl in Lonara village in Kalmeshwar in 2005 near here.

Additional District Sessions judge, Vibha Ingle, today awarded the death sentence to Amar Singh Thakur and his accomplice Rajesh Kamble for the rape and murder of village girl, Kanchan Meshram, on December 18, 2005 in Lonara, about 60 kms from Nagpur.

Jiah Khan suicide: Suraj’s lawyer opposes narco-test

A day after Mumbai police sought court’s permission to conduct narco-analysis test on Suraj Pancholi, son of actor couple arrested on charge of abetting his actor-girlfriend Jiah Khan’s suicide, his lawyers said that they would not give consent to it.

“We are not going to give our consent to it as Suraj is of tender age,” his advocate Zamir Khan said on Friday.

As per the law, no chemical tests can be conducted on an accused without his or her consent.

“Police moved this application after his judicial custody was extended and they tried to get an order on our back,” Khan added.

Prakash Singh Badal likely to be made NDA convenor

With JD(U) out of the BJP-led alliance, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is likely to be the new NDA convenor and be given the task of persuading other parties to join the opposition grouping ahead of the 2014 elections.

BJP sources said today that Badal, 85, may be named the NDA convenor, a post that fell vacant after JD(U) walked out of the NDA. JD(U) president Sharad Yadav was the NDA convenor.

Minor girl raped, pregnant woman molested in Ahmedabad

A nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth in Isanpur area of the city, while a pregnant woman has accused her doctor of molesting her, police said today.

The girl was sleeping when Firoz Shamsher (20), a resident of Patharkuva, approached her and raped her last night. He was passing through the locality at the time, Isanpur police said.

He was caught and handed over to the police.

The girl has been admitted to the civil hospital here, they said, adding that her medical report is awaited.

Modi’s appointment has galvanised party cadre: Jawdekar

BJP today said the appointment of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as its campaign spearhead was having a “galvanising” effect on the party cadre.

Modi’s new role has “galvanised” the party cadre and also the people who have welcomed his “leadership” role, BJP spokesman Prakash Jawdekar told reporters here.

In reply to a question, Jawdekar said NDA would grow in strength and denied rift with Shiv Sena which had earlier criticised Modi on the issue of Uttarakhand rescue operation though withdrew its remarks later.

Woman gives birth to girl child in train

A woman today gave birth to a girl child in a moving train, however the new born died soon after due to lack of proper medical attention.

Seema, a resident of Nangloi in Delhi, took a train from New Delhi railway station to Hathras in Uttar Pradesh, sources said.

Seema gave birth to a child before the Ghaziabad railway station, they said adding the new born died soon after.

The issue was brought to the notice of Ghaziabad GRP, who took the woman to a nearby hospital, sources said.

UAE favours religion, culture’s moderate approach

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has urged Arab and African parliaments to present the moderate and tolerant approach of their religions to the other world cultures to dispel misunderstanding and extremism towards Arab, Islamic and African cultures.

In a working paper before the 13th Afro-Arab Parliamentary Conference in Rabat, Morocco, member of the UAE Federal National Council (FNC) Sultan Al Shamsi said Arab and African MPs were also asked to promote the culture of peace, tolerance and understanding for greater cross-cultural and religious interaction.

Vohra takes oath for second term as Kashmir governor

N.N Vohra was sworn-in as the governor of Jammu and Kashmir for a second term at a ceremony held on the Raj Bhavan lawns here Friday evening, an official release said.

“N.N. Vohra was administered the oath of office by Justice M. M. Kumar, chief justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court,” the release said.

The governor was presented a guard of honour by a contingent of Jammu and Kashmir Police, it said, adding Chief Secretary Mohammad Iqbal Khandey then read out in Urdu and English the warrant of appointment of the governor issued by President Pranab Mukherjee on May 1.

Ishrat case: Home ministry doubtful of CBI evidence against IB man

The home ministry’s prior sanction was required by the CBI for prosecution of senior IB official Rajinder Kumar in the Ishrat Jahan shootout case, ministry sources said Friday, and expressed doubts over evidence with the agency against him.

“There is not enough evidence against the senior IB officer,” said a home ministry official, who did not want to be named. He said that passing on intelligence input could not be a basis of prosecution as the input did not talk of follow up action.

India, China hold 16th round of border talks

India and China began the 16th round of their border talks here Friday led by their special representatives – National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon from India and State Councillor Yang Jiechi from China.

This is the first meeting of the special representatives on border talks since the new Chinese leadership took over in March and comes in the aftermath of the Chinese troop incursion in Ladakh that raised temperatures between the two neighbours.

The owner of the bicycle, Per Edstrom had set up a camera, as he had grown tired of finding the tyres punctured, the Local reported.

Pakistan has second highest `out-of-school` children globally

Pakistan has the second highest number of out-of-school children in the world, behind only Nigeria, according to a recent report released by a child rights body. According to The Dawn, The Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (Sparc) stated in it”s annual report titled ”The State of Pakistan”s children 2012” that one fourth of the 19.75 million children in Pakistan who were aged five to nine were out of school and including adolescents, the figure rose to about 25 million. Of these children, seven million aged three to five did not receive any primary schooling.

India to soon engage Pakistan in peace talks, says envoy

India will soon engage Nawaz Sharif-led government in dialogue to resolve outstanding issues between the two countries, Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan has said.

Sharat Sabharwal met the chief of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F), Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and informed him about the progress made by the two countries in various areas.

According to Dawn News, he said that in the last two years India had relaxed its visa regime and now Pakistanis were allowed to visit 10 cities.

Pak govt denies initiating action against Musharraf in treason case

The Pakistan Government had not initiated any action against former president Pervez Musharraf, but had merely submitted its reply to the Supreme Court, minister for Information and broadcasting has said.

Pervaiz Rashid said the government would fulfill its obligations under the Constitution.

He added that the law of the land would take its own course and the government would fully cooperate with the courts.

According to the Daily Times, he called apprehensions of former army chief General (retired) Aslam Baig regarding the proposed trial of Musharraf as baseless.
