Dead Indian prisoner in Pakistan yet to be identified: MEA

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has said it is yet to identity of the Indian prisoner who died in Pakistan. MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said name of the deceased”s appears in the list of Indian prisoners provided by Islamabad as Zakir Ali. He also mentioned that on two separate occasions, members of an Indian committee comprising of jurists and also a diplomatic counsellor from the Indian High Commission couldn”t identify the individual because of his mental ill health.

Instruction board not enough to preserve sanctity of Makkah Masjid

The foreign tourists who visit Charminar do not want to miss the chance of having a visit to historical Makkah Masjid. But sadly the woman tourists fail to preserve the sanctity of the masjid. Although the instruction board at the entrance of Makkah Masjid clearly states both in Urdu and English that ‘Ladies are requested to enter the mosque with hijab (dupatta)’, but there are only few who abide by this rule.

Bombay HC refuses to review pro-poor medical scheme

The Bombay High Court dismissed petition of a medical foundation seeking review of its earlier order approving a 2006 scheme that required public trusts getting government aid or land to provide free hospital beds for the poor and underprivileged.

Rejecting the petition, a bench noted “the scheme is formulated by this court after considering the relevant provisions of the Bombay Public Trust Act and the need for modification of Section 41AA in the larger interest of society. We are of the considered opinion that the scheme formulated by this Court does not call for any interference.”

Dr. Mohammed Vizarat Rasool Khan founder and chairman Shadan Group of Educational Institutions has been shifted from Apollo hospital, Jubilee Hills to his residence Shah Manzil at Mansab Tank. Jiah Khan’s mother posts Sooraj Pancholi’s love letters, text messages on Twitter

Bollywood actress Jiah Khan’s mother Rabiya has launched a sustained campaign on micro-blogging site Twitter to prove Sooraj Pancholi’s role in her suicide.

Jiah Khan had committed suicide on June 3 at her Mumbai residence.

Rabiya, who has blamed Jiah’s boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi for her daughter’s untimely death, shared a few love letters and text messages that were exchanged between them on Twitter.

Sooraj Pancholi was arrested on June 10 for allegedly abetting the suicide of his girlfriend actor Jiah Khan. Sooraj is the son of actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab.

South Korea stops anti-North leaflet launch

South Korean police today stopped a planned launch of anti-Pyongyang leaflets following a threat of violent retaliation by the North.

A group of defectors from North Korea and US human rights activists had said they would use gas-filled balloons to drop 200,000 leaflets critical of Pyongyang over the tense border.

But a contingent of plain-clothed policemen prevented the activists from unloading leaflets and other materials for the launch from a pickup truck at Imjingak, a tourist site near the border.

8 soldiers killed in Thai south: army

Eight soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in the restive Thai south early this morning, an army spokesman said.

Another four people — two soldiers and two civilians — were wounded in the blast in Krongpinang district of the Muslim-majority Yala province.

The soldiers had been on duty all night at their base and were returning to their residence in a military truck when the roadside bomb went off.

“It was a very powerful bomb that completely destroyed the truck,” Colonel Pramote Promin told AFP by phone.

Will continue with efforts to open a consulate in Tibet: US

The United States would continue with its efforts to open its consulate in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, a State Department official has said as the top American diplomat in Beijing concluded his rare six-days trip to the region.

“In terms of the potential for a consulate, that still remains our policy, that, as envisioned in the Tibet Policy Act, we’ll continue to make the best efforts to establish a consulate in Lhasa,” the State Department spokesperson, Patrick Ventrell, told reporters at his daily news conference yesterday.

Petrol price hiked by Rs 1.82 per litre

Petrol price was Friday hiked by a steep Rs 1.82 a litre, the third increase in rates this month.

An increase in diesel rates is expected early next week.

Petrol price hike is due to the increasing oil pricing in international market and the Indian government has no control over the international market pricing.

Oil companies raised petrol rates by Rs 1.82 a litre, excluding local sales tax or VAT, with effect from midnight. Actual increase will be higher and will vary from city to city depending on local taxes.

Sheila Dikshit wants Rahul Gandhi as PM

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Thursday backed Rahul Gandhi as the party’s prime ministerial candidate in 2014, saying that he will have to be convinced to occupy the post.

“We want Rahul Gandhi to become the prime minister. He will not choose to be the one, but we will have to make him the prime minister,” Dikshit said here addressing partymen.

The chief minister said United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s decision of not taking up the prime minister’s job in 2009 will not go in vain.

Plane crashes in Guatemala, six killed

A plane has crashed in the mountains of western Guatemala, killing six men, at least two of them from Mexico.

The fire department says the plane smashed into a hill in the town of Nuevo Porvenir today and was completely destroyed. The town is near the Mexico border.

Firefighters spokesman Cecilio Chacaj says two of the men have been identified, including the pilot. His license says he is native of Tamaulipas state, in northern Mexico.

The identification of another passenger in the plane says he was from Sonora, a state that also borders the United States.

US providing Israel with advanced arms

The United States is planning to provide another package of advanced weapons to Israel in a bid to elevate the arms race in the Middle East.

The U.S. State Department said the discussions between the United States and Israel about the arms deal are ongoing, USA Today reported.

Air-refueling aircraft, advanced radars for F-15 fighter jets and up to eight V-22 Ospreys are among the new weapons.

Landing like a helicopter, Ospreys can carry two dozen special operations forces over long distances at aircraft speeds.

‘Did not want polls in Ramzan month, but court order has to be

After the Supreme Court today rescheduled the dates of West Bengal panchayat elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the polls during Ramzan would pose problems for Muslims, but a court order has to be accepted.

“We wanted the elections in winter. We did not want polling during the monsoon,” Banerjee told a panchayat election meeting here in Hooghly district.

“Elections during the Ramzan month will pose problem for the people of the minority community. We did not want it. But sometimes, we have to accept under compulsion when there is a court order,” she said.

Petrol price hike due to “wrong” economic policies: BJP

BJP today said the fresh hike in petrol prices is a result of “wrong” economic policies pursued by Congress-led UPA government over the last nine years.

“This hike in petrol prices is a result of the wrong economic policies of UPA government for the last nine years. Its excuse that this hike is due to the devaluation of the Rupee is misplaced. If this government had followed a strong and effective policies, the economy would be robust,” BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi told PTI.
