Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi today vowed to ensure 50 per cent representation to women in AICC and other party wings as he held his first formal interaction with newly-appointed party office bearers, the team set up by him for the 2014 Lok Sabha poll.

TV star Rohit Roy, the wild card entrant in ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’, hopes to please Remo D’souza as he believes the choreographer is hard to impress.

The sixth season of the talent hunt is being judged by dancing diva Madhuri Dixit, filmmaker Karan Johar and D’souza.

“Remo is a very old friend of mine, but I’m scared of him as he is the toughest one to pleased on the show,” Rohit told PTI.

Rohit and D’Souza had worked together in many films including ‘Kaante’, ‘Just Married’, ‘Delhi Heights’ and ‘Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena’.

Rohit, 44, will be entering ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’ next week.

Brazil president meets youth representatives

President Dilma Rousseff has pledged to open new channels of dialogue with Brazil’s youth, the dominant demographic in nationwide protests that have rocked the country over the past two weeks.

Rousseff and Education Minister Aloizio Mercadante met in the capital city of Brasilia with leaders from 25 youth organizations, including student and labor unions, as well as with gay rights advocates as part of the Brazilian leader’s continuing talks with different interest groups.

Dozens of mummies found in pre-Inca royal tomb in Peru

Polish and Peruvian archaeologists have discovered a royal burial chamber with 60 mummies and some 1,200 gold, silver and ceramic objects from over 1,000 years ago in Peru.

The mummies — including three princesses — and other items date back to a pre-Inca culture called the Wari, who peaked between the seventh and 11th centuries, researchers said.

“This is a unique find,” said archaeologist Giersz Milosz of the University of Warsaw on Friday (yesterday). “This is the first Peruvian discovery of a royal tomb from the Wari culture,” of which little is known.

Minor girl’s hand chopped off in Patna

In a dastardly act, some men allegedly chopped off a hand of a minor girl, who was a witness in kidnapping case of her younger sister by them, in the capital city.

An FIR has been registered with Kadamkuan police station in the case on the basis of statement of girl’s father, city police said on Saturday.

As per the complaint, the incident happened late Thursday night in a bylane near Rajendranagar Railway terminal.

11 information officers penalised in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh State Information Commission imposed penalties of Rs 37,500 on eleven Public Information Officers, for “not acting reasonably and diligently” in supplying the information.

State Information Commissioner C Madhukar Raj on Friday said in an official press release that 260 appeal cases were disposed in the month of June.

“The disposal of these cases resulted in issuing show-cause notices to 103 PIOs, where it was found that the information was denied to the applicants for long periods without adequate reasons,” the release said.

Ambulance crashes into autorickshaw; three killed

The life-saving ‘108’ ambulance service proved fatal for three persons, who were travelling in an autorickshaw near Warangal in Andhra Pradesh.

An ambulance van, which was part of 108 Emergency Response Services, dashed into an autorickshaw coming from opposite direction at Aishwarya Garden on the city’s outskirts around midnight last night. Three persons travelling in the autorickshaw were killed and two others injured, police said.

Two of the victims died on way to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital here, while the third one breathed his last during treatment, they said.

More cuts needed to balance British budget: experts

A leading think tank here has observed despite spending cuts of 11.5 billion pounds (over $17 billion) as announced by British Chancellor George Osborne for 2015-16, it may not not be enough to balance government budgets in the medium term.

According to Carl Emmerson, director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), an economic research institute in London, further consolidation would be needed to get borrowing back down to a sustainable level, Xinhua reported.

Property dealer commits suicide by hanging himself

A property dealer on Saturday allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his residence in Shalimar Garden area in Ghaziabad, police said.

Rajeev Kataria, 33, took the extreme step early on Saturday morning when he was alone in his room, they said.

Police has recovered a suicide note in which Kataria has said that no one should be held responsible for his death.

Kataria has not written any reason in his suicide note, said Arvind Yadav, Circle Officer, Ghaziabad.

AIIMS Bhopal director Sandeep Kumar quits

The director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhopal, Dr Sandeep Kumar, has resigned from his post citing ill-health among other reasons.

Dr Kumar took this decision after returning from a meeting in New Delhi called by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare few days back.

He also attended a high-level meeting of the finance committee after that.

Kumar who just completed more than two years in office said he has given my best services to the institution during this period.

Mumbai police rescue 15 women forced into flesh trade

The Social Service branch of the Mumbai Police and members of Rescue Foundation raid ed a flat in central Mumbai city and rescued 15 women forced into the flesh trade. One person was arrested.

“We got the information that some girls were being forced into prostitution at Kamathipura. So to rescue them, we took the help of the S.S. branch and we have succeeded in freeing them. Some 15 girls have been rescued,” said Rescue Foundation investigation officer, Nitin Narayan Mangekur.

Social media giant Facebook has decided that it will review its advertising system in order to avoid placing adverts on pages having offensive content.

According to BBC, Facebook will now decide where adverts will appear on its site following instances of many companies withdrawing their advertising after complaints about the adverts being placed on pages having offensive content.

Marks and Spencer and BSkyB were among the companies who withdrew their adverts after an advert was placed on a Facebook page called ‘ cute and gay boys’ featuring photographs of teenage boys.

Flood-affected areas in Uttarakhand should have been handed over to army: Azam Khan

Launching a frontal attack on the Vijay Bahuguna Government in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh Minority Welfare Minister Azam Khan today said that all flood-affected areas in the hill state should have been handed over to the Indian Army.

“We had said it on the very first day that the affected areas should be handed over to the army,” he said.

Khan said that the Bahuguna Government should have called an emergency Cabinet meeting soon after they realised that the situation was out of their hands.

ASI team to visit Kedarnath shrine

A team of experts from Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will visit the Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand to assess the quantum of damage caused by the flood fury and restoration required for the shrine.

A team of five experts from Dehradun and Delhi will be the part of the exercise for the revered temple which bore the brunt of floods and landslides triggered by the deluge in the hill state on June 16.

The state government had sought help from the ASI to assess the damage caused to the shrine.

Efforts are on to drop the team by air by tomorrow, sources said.

Shock wave from Russian meteor strike circled earth twice

Scientists have revealed that the shock wave from an asteroid that struck Russia in February was so powerful that it travelled twice around the globe.

They used a system of sensors set up to detect evidence of nuclear tests and said it was the most powerful event ever recorded by the network, the BBC reported.
