Geetika Sharma suicide: Trial against Gopal Kanda begins

A fast track court on Monday commenced trial in the suicide case of an ex-air hostess in which former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda is the main accused.

Kanda is facing trial for alleged offence of rape, unnatural offence and abetting suicide of the air hostess, who had worked in his company.

His aide Aruna Chadha is also an accused and has been charged with abetting the offences of rape, unnatural sex and the victim’s suicide.

Teacher burnt alive by colleagues in Bihar

In a horrific incident, a school teacher was burnt alive by his colleagues inside the school premises in Purnia district on Monday.

Superintendent of police Kim alleged that a group of teachers along with the principal of a middle school under Maranga police station took the teacher Ranjit Kumar (40) to a toilet, tied his hands and legs and poured kerosene on him before setting him on fire.

The ghastly incident took place before the classes began this morning and students were yet to come in.

70 nations seek action against cervical cancer

With cervical cancer projected to kill nearly half a million women by 2030, stakeholders from more than 70 countries came together Monday to seek an urgent call for action against the disease.

The landmark announcement, made at the global forum on cervical cancer prevention here, called for universal access to cervical cancer prevention, which would rewrite the future for millions of girls and women living in some of the poorest countries in the world.

The global forum was hosted by 30 international partners, including the health ministry of Malaysia.

Israel to help India diversify fruit, vegetable crops

New Delhi will also get help to set up 28 centres of excellence in 10 states over the next three years.

Kin of Indian girl with rare cancer in UAE needs money

An 11-year-old Indian girl in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has a rare cancer and her family is racing against time to collect funds for her treatment.

Martina Thomas, who will turn 12 June 4, started taking chemotharapy in Abu Dhabi a year ago after she was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia, a form of childhood cancer symptomised by an abnormally high white blood-cell count, The National reported Monday.

Though she started taking the chemotherapy course immediately after she was diagnosed with the disease last year, it was not enough, and now she needs a bone marrow transplant.

Panchayat members in J&K feel deceived

The main organisation of elected panchayat members, All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) has accused the state government of being insensitive and deceiving over 33,000 panches and sarpanches – village council members and chief – in the name of empowering panchayats.

Anil Sharma, general secretary of AJKPC, said Monday: “The state government is not showing any sincerity on the issue of empowerment of Panchayati Raj Institutions in the state. The 73rd Amendment to the Indian constitution that gives powers to the panchayats has not been extended to Jammu and Kashmir.”
