Gali Janardhan Reddy chargesheeted in illegal mining case

Former Karnataka Minister and mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy and six others were today charge sheeted by CBI in a court here in connection with alleged illegal mining of iron ore which caused a loss of Rs 198 crore to the exchequer.

CBI booked Reddy, his personal assistant M Ali Khan, the then Deputy Conservator of Forest, Bellary, S Muthiah, the then Deputy Director of Mines and Geology, S P Raju, the then Conservator of Forests, Manoj Kumar Shukla, and two private persons Swastik Nagaraj and K Mahesh for alleged criminal conspiracy, an agency spokesperson said here.

Spot-fixing: Govt rules out interference with BCCI

Notwithstanding questions over BCCI in the wake of IPL spot-fixing, government has ruled out interference with it unless it “becomes absolutely necessary” but insists that the cricketing body should have “transparent” and “objective” systems in place to prevent malpractices.

Law Minister Kapil Sibal said the government should keep away from sports “as far as possible” as it could damage it.

“Sports can’t be run by governments…governments getting involved in sports activities would ultimately damage sports,” he told PTI in an interview here.

Shinde away in the US as his Ministry grapples Naxal crisis

As the security apparatus grapples with the fall out of the Maoists attack on Congress leaders in Chhattisgarh, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde is away in the United States and will return only on Wednesday.

Shinde, who left New Delhi on May 19 to attend the Indo-US Homeland Security dialogue, is not cutting short his visit and will return home as scheduled on May 29, sources said.

Except Shinde, all other members of the Indian delegation who went to the US to take part the May 20-22 bilateral meetings, have returned home.

Book lawyers for participating in rally for blast accused

The Faizabad Bar Association today demanded the police to file sedition cases against a group of lawyers for participating in a rally in which anti-national slogans were allegedly raised.

The Bar members handed over a memorandum to the SSP to demand for immediate registration of cases of sedition against the advocates defending the accused in the serial blasts that had rocked Lucknow and Faizabad courts in November 2007.

Chandrababu Didn’t Stop T State: Bandaru

BJP national vice-president Bandaru Dattatreya has said that the then Chief Minister of the State and TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu didn’t obstruct the creation of separate Telangana State.

Anand Takes Charge As Cyberabad Police Chief

City Traffic Additional Police Commissioner C V Anand, who has been transferred and posted as Commissioner of Cyberabad, took charge on Monday.

Speaking to the media after assuming office, Anand said he would concentrate on protection of women, curbing robberies and control of vehicular traffic. He also stressed the need for formulating new policies to effectively tackle several issues under the Cyberabad police limits.

AP gets some respite as mercury levels

People of Andhra Pradesh, which has been reeling under severe heat wave conditions for the past many days, on Monday got some respite as the mercury level dipped slightly due to a low pressure area created over the Bay of Bengal.

The highest temperature of 43.5 degrees Celsius was recorded at Kavali in Nellore district, Met officials said.

Light showers were also experienced at many places, they said.

Amway India Chairman, 2 Directors arrested

Network marketing firm Amway’s India Chairman and CEO William S Pinckney and two company Directors were arrested here today on charges of financial irregularities.

The two directors are Sanjay Malhotra and Anshu Budhraja, crime branch sources said.

The arrests were made on a complaint of a woman who claimed to have incurred loss through the network and on the basis of three cases registered against the company last year in Wayanad district, they said.
