Stop romanticising Maoists, they are terrorists, says Jairam Ramesh

Describing Maoists who killed several Congress leaders in the Chhattisgarh attack four days ago as terrorists, senior Union minister Jairam Ramesh today expressed the hope that the “deliberate and meticulously- planned carnage” would be a turning point in the battle against them.

Maoists should not be “romanticised” as they are terrorists because they spread terror, the Minister for Rural Development was referring to Saturday’s attack in which 27 people, including Chhattisgarh Congress President and some other party leaders, were killed.

Russia evacuates 130 people from Syria

A Russian government plane left Syria Tuesday with some 130 people from Russia and other former Soviet republics who decided to leave the country amid the ongoing conflict, said a spokesperson for Russia’s Emergencies Ministry.

An Ilyushin Il-62 departed from Latakia, a major port city in Syria’s northwest, with 128 people aboard, spokeswoman Irina Rossius said.

Two Russian planes had arrived earlier that day bringing more than 20 metric tonnes of humanitarian aid.

Jethmalani threatens to expose ‘undesirable elements’ in BJP

Noted lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP Ram Jethmalani on Tuesday night threatened to “expose” the “undesirable elements” within BJP and suggested that his expulsion from the party’s primary membership was done because of his campaign against black money.

At the same time, Jethmalani refused to find fault with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who is also part of the BJP’s Parliamentary Board that took the decision to expel him for six years on charges of “breach of discipline”.

Actress Maria Paul arrested for 19 Crore fraud

A CHENNAI- BASED actress, who will soon be seen in a John Abraham production titled Madras Café was arrested from a South Delhi farmhouse on Tuesday. Leena Maria Paul ( 25) was wanted by the Chennai Police for her involvement in a ` 19 crore cheating case there.
Maria Paul and her live- in partner Chandrashekhar had duped Canara Bank in Chennai to the tune of ` 19 crore this year.
She is said to be fond of luxury cars and had bought nine of them including Rolls Royce with the money.

Police hands over Jaipur girls to their parents

Two minor girls, who had left their homes in Jaipur fearing their parents would scold them for performing bad in studies, landed in the safe hands of police after a constable spotted them moving in South Delhi’s Munirka area.

Constable Vijay spotted 14-year-old Pinky Sharma, daughter of Puranmal Sharma and 10-year-old Suman, daughter of Lekhraj — both residents of Kanta village in Jaipur, roaming on the intervening night of May 25/26 during patrolling in Munirka area.

Swiss woman gang rape case: Victim’s statement recorded

Swiss woman, who was allegedly gang-raped in a forest area near Datia town in March, Tuesday gave her statement before a special Commission in Delhi.

Since the victim was unable to come to Datia to take part in the court proceedings, a Commission headed by Metropolitan Magistrate of Patiala House Court, Akash Jain was appointed specially for recording the victim’s statement.

The Commission went to the Swiss Embassy in New Delhi for the purpose and recorded her statement.

Man gets life term for murdering nephew’s wife, son

A local court here today sentenced a man and two others to life term for murdering his nephew’s wife and their eight-year-old son in 2012.

Additional district and sessions judge Sandeep Garg also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the main accused Ranbir while the two accomplices, Anil and Lalit, were each asked to pay up Rs 45,000.

According to the prosecution, Savita and her son Sumit were found murdered at their house in the district’s Dhigana village on April 6, 2012.

Youth gets 7 yrs in jail for raping minor

A local court today sentenced a 22-year-old youth to seven years in jail for raping his neighbour’s minor daughter for nearly two months.

A fine of Rs 10,000 was also imposed on Rohit by the court of additional district and sessions judge Ram Niwas Bharti.

A case of rape had been registered against the convict on February 23.

According to the complaint, the victim’s mother, who was a single parent, had to go to her village in Uttarakhand for few months regarding some work and had therefore left her daughter with her neighbour Rita.

Law Ministry for 3-7 yrs jail for spot, match fixing

The Law Ministry has proposed punishment ranging from three to seven years` jail for various “dishonest” practices in a sporting event, including spot- fixing and match-fixing.

The draft `Dishonest Practice in Sporting Event (Prevention) Bill`, submitted to the Sports Ministry, provides for punishment of up to three years in jail with fine for accepting gratification for fixing the result of a sporting event.

The punishment for performing dishonestly for fixing the result of a sporting event by accepting gratification is imprisonment which may extend up to seven years or fine or both.

Sreesanth to be lodged in jail number 1 in Tihar

Suspended cricketer S Sreesanth, who was on Tuesday remanded in judicial custody till June 4, will be kept in jail number one of the Tihar jail.

“Sreesanth will be lodged in Jail number one,” police sources said.

Rejecting Delhi Police plea for two more days of custodial interrogation in connection with the IPL spot-fixing scandal case, a Delhi court on Tuesday sent cricketers Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila and two bookies to judicial custody.

Police to proceed against Pak umpire Rauf in betting scandal

Mumbai police intend to get Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf back to India by seeking issuance of Letters Rogatory following revelations about his alleged association with bookies involved in IPL betting scandal, city’s crime chief Himanshu Roy said in Mumbai on Tuesday.

“He (Rauf) has associated himself with bookies in a manner that brings him under suspicion and so we are proceeding against him… including issuing Letters Rogatory,” Roy, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), told reporters.

A Letters Rogatory is a formal request from a court to a foreign court for judicial assistance.

Girl commits suicide alleging harassment by teachers

A girl has allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a river in Palampur town of Kangra, police said here today.

The girl, a student of Palampur Agriculture University, has alleged in her suicide note that she was being “harassed” by her two teachers, police said.

The girl killed herself yesterday.

An FIR has been registered on the complaint of girl’s father, resident of Ghuggar Nala in Palampur Tehsil, Police Superintendent of Kangra district Balbir Thakur said.

No arrests has been made so far.

Man arrested for ‘raping’ daughter-in-law

A 58-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping his daughter-in-law at Bangadwa village, 8-km from here, police said Tuesday.

Police said that the accused, identified as one Mahabir Singh Yadav, was today produced in a local court which has remanded him in 14-days’ judicial custody.

In her complaint, the victim alleged that her father-in-law sexually assaulted her yesterday when she was alone and then threatened her with dire consequences if she spoke of the incident to anyone.

South Indian actor arrested for fraud in Delhi

South Indian actor Leena Maria Paul was arrested from a farmhouse here for allegedly cheating a bank of Rs.19 crore, police said Tuesday.

Paul, 25, was living with her male friend, Balaji alias Sekar Reddy alias Sukkesh Chandrasekar, who is the kingpin in the case. He is absconding.

A joint operation by Delhi Police and Chennai Police led to Paul at the farmhouse in Fatehpur Beri in south Delhi Monday night.

Heavy polling for a Karnataka assembly seat

Around 80 percent of over 160,000 eligible voters in the Periyapatna assembly constituency in Karnataka Tuesday cast their ballot and the result May 31 is keenly awaited by the ruling Congress.

Periyapatna did not vote May 5 when assembly election was held as polling was countermanded there following the death of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate.

“The polling was peaceful and around 80 percent voting has taken place,” a spokesperson for the state election authorities told reporters here.

Heat wave continues, over 500 dead since April

Heat wave conditions, which have seen over 500 people losing their lives since April due to heatstroke, continued across India Tuesday, an official said.

According to the Department of Disaster Management, 524 people have died of sunstroke since April 1 across the country. However, unofficial sources have put the toll at over 600 during last four days itself.

Submitting a comprehensive medical report of Vinay Sharma, an accused in the Dec 16, 2012 gang-rape here, officials of a government hospital Tuesday told a Delhi court that the accused should be able to attend court May 31.

Additional Session Judge Yogesh Khanna Monday asked Lok Nayak Hospital, where Shamr is admitted for treatment, to a file report stating when the accused would be in a position to appear before him.

Syrian rockets injure three in Lebanon

Three Lebanese citizens were injured Tuesday when seven Syrian rockets landed in the eastern Lebanese city of Hermel, Xinhua reported quoting Lebanese state-run National News Agency

One of the rockets hit a house and wounded three people, the report said, adding that another four landed in residential areas without causing major casualties while two others on the outskirts of Hermel.

AGP slams Rahul Gandhi after WikiLeaks revelation

Assam’s regional political party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Tuesday slammed Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi for his comments on the regional party a few years ago, which were released by WikiLeaks recently.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in Guwahati, AGP secretary Durga Das Boro said that the party was contemplating legal action against Rahul Gandhi for making such a comment on the Assam’s regional party, which formed the government in the state for three terms since 1986.

Girl raped by her cousin and his friends in Delhi

A 16-year-old girl who was brought to the national capital on the pretext of getting her a job was gang-raped repeatedly by her cousin and his friends, police said Tuesday.

The girl was brought from Gumla in Jharkhand by her cousin and his friend.

According to police, the girl was found unconscious near a temple near Kashmiri Gate metro station in north Delhi.

Her cousin had got her a job in Patel Nagar where she was working as housemaid.

“Her cousin used to take her to his house, where he and his friends would rape her,” said an official.

Chandrababu Naidu re-elected TDP chief

Nara Chandrababu Naidu was Tuesday unanimously re-elected as the president of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) for the ninth consecutive term.

The former Andhra Pradesh chief minister was re-elected as party chief on the second and last day of ‘Mahanadu’ or the state-wide annual conclave of the party.

It was only a formality as no other leader had filed nomination for the top post. Naidu has completed 18 years as the party chief.

He had taken over the reins of the party in 1995 after unseating his father-in-law and TDP founder N.T. Rama Rao from power.
