Saleem donates Rs.50 lakh to cancer hospital

TDP MLC Mr. Mohd Saleem donated Rs.50 lakh for Baswa Tarakam Cancer Hospital and NTR Memorial Trust. He became the highest donor. Mr. Saleem told that out of this amount Rs.25 lakh are given for Baswa Tarakam Cancer Hospital and the remaning 25 lakh are allocated for the welfare activities of NTR Memorial Trust. He donated this amount in 32nd Mahanadu meeting. The other leaders of TDP also donated amounts for strenthening the party.

KKR, RCB match may come under scanner for ‘match-fixing’

A recent IPL match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore may also come under the scanner of Delhi Police for “match-fixing” after the interrogation of Rajasthan Royal’s player Ajit Chandila and bookies who have been arrested on charges of spot-fixing, police sources said today.

However, Delhi Police said as such they have no evidence to corroborate the claims of Chandila and others made during questioning in the IPL spot-fixing scandal or to come to a conclusion that the match was fixed.

MANUU’s campus will help in nurturing Urdu language: Omar

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said the upcoming satellite campus of Maulana Azad National Urdu University here will help in government’s efforts to nurture the official language of the state.

UAE begins construction of second nuclear reactor

The oil-rich UAE today began construction of a second nuclear power plant, one of four reactors aimed at cutting carbon dioxide emissions by some 12 million tonnes a year in 2020.

Emirates Nuclear Energy Corp (ENEC) said it poured the first part of safety concrete for Unit 2, in a ceremony attended by visiting Korean Trade, Industry and Energy Sang-jick Yoon.

In 2009, an international consortium led by the state-run Korea Electric Power Corp won a USD 20.4 billion deal to build four nuclear power plants in Baraka, west of Abu Dhabi.

Syria militants ask American senator for US targeted strikes on Hezbollah

Hawkish US Republican Senator John McCain has slipped into Syria to meet with foreign-backed insurgent commanders, who asked for US bombing of Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, “targeted strikes,” and the establishment of a no-fly zone over Syria.

McCain’s brief and largely publicity intrusion into Syria came on Monday near Syria’s Bab Salameh border crossing with Turkey, where he reportedly held talks with leaders of foreign-sponsored militant group, so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA), according to his spokesman Brian Rogers cited in US-based press reports.

18 killed, 44 injured in Iraq attacks

At least 18 people were killed and 44 wounded in separate attacks, including a suicide truck bombing, in central and northern Iraq Tuesday, police said.

In northern Iraq, security forces clashed with gunmen during a security operation in Mosul city, some 400 km from Baghdad, reported Xinhua citing a police source. It killed three security personnel and four gunmen. Some 15 suspected militants in the area were also detained.

Body in mortuary for a month as police look for family

An unidentified body of a young woman, who seemed to be in her 30s, with severe stab wounds on the neck and abdomen slashed open, had been lying in the mortuary of Rao Tula Ram (RTR) Hospital for one month and 11 days. On Tuesday afternoon, police authorities finally gave the go-ahead to the hospital to perform her post-mortem examination.
Authorities at the forensic medicine department of the hospital said woman’s viscera had been preserved and sent to CFSL to confirm sexual assault.

Villagers beat teacher accused of defaming girl

Angry over allegations that a teacher at a government school in the Mohammed Kheda area here had tried to defame a girl, locals today beat him up in the presence of several policemen.

Jagjivan Khedi, a teacher at the primary section of Government Senior Secondary School in the Mohammed Kheda area was beaten up by a group of villagers following allegations that he was trying to defame a girl by linking her name with someone, said district education officer Dilbag Singh Malik.

Bombs thrown at Bangladesh minister’s home: police

Three small homemade bombs exploded after being hurled at the house of Bangladesh’s foreign minister early today but no one was injured, police and an official said.

Foreign Minister Dipu Moni is currently in London but her family was at home when the bombs were thrown at the residence, her spokesman Monirul Islam Kabir told AFP.

“The three cocktails were hurled from outside and exploded at the roof of the foreign minister’s house in the capital,” said Kabir, referring to the crude homemade bombs that are popular among Bangladeshi protesters.

A Pakistani court today directed authorities to take immediate steps to block “blasphemous material” on social media websites and sought a detailed response within 20 days.

A division bench of the Peshawar High Court headed by Chief Justice Dost Muhammad issued the order in response to a petition filed by a lawyer named Arif Khan.

The judges said authorities should take immediate measures to block blasphemous and disputed material on social media websites.

Syria rebels give 24-hour ultimatum over Hezbollah: TV

Syrian rebel chief Salim Idriss warned today that if fighters from Lebanon’s Shiite party Hezbollah do not stop their aggression in Syria, where they are backing government troops, “we will take all measures to hunt” them, “even in hell.”

“If the attacks of Hezbollah against Syrian territory do not stop within 24 hours, we will take all measures to hunt Hezbollah, even in hell,” he told Al-Arabiya news channel, addressing Lebanese President Michel Sleiman, Arab League chief Nabil Al-Arabi and UN chief Ban Ki-Moon.

Punjab clears appointment of Sarabjit’s daughter

Punjab government today cleared the appointment of slain Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh’s daughter as ‘Naib Tehsildar’ (revenue officer).

The state cabinet, which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, cleared the appointment of Swapandeep Kaur.

An official spokesperson said that Sarabjit had succumbed to a attack in Lahore jail and subsequently the state government had declared him a martyr.

Besides sister Dalbir Kaur, Sarabjit is survived by his wife and another daughter.

Russia to send Syria missiles as spillover fears grow

Russia insisted today it would deliver anti-aircraft missiles to Syria despite international criticism, as fears of spillover from the conflict grew after three Lebanese soldiers were killed in a border-area attack.

Israel warned Russia it would “know what to do” if the delivery went ahead, and Syria’s top rebel commander gave Hezbollah, the powerful Lebanese Shiite movement, a 24-hour ultimatum to stop fighting alongside regime forces.

Two youths accuse police of torturing them

Two youths residing in Bhalowali village have accused the police of torturing them during questioning in a theft case.

Mohinder Singh alleged that Station House Officer Harsandeep Singh had asked him to produce his son Gurpreet and nephew Gurdpreet in the police station to verify facts about the theft case.

The SHO and some other policemen assaulted the youths once they reached the police station yesterday, Mohinder said.

The family then approached Congress MLA Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa who rushed to the police station and rescued the youths.

Two prisoners escape from police custody

Two prisoners escaped from police custody when they were returning back in a van after a court hearing.

The prisoners — Raj and Hasin — from Dasna jail were presented before a magistrate here. While returning in the vehicle, the duo gave police a slip, police said today.

Raj, a resident of Usmanpur in Delhi, was arrested on April 1 at Ghaziabad. Hasin, a resident of Bulandsahar, was arrested on May 5.

A case has been registered against erring police personnel and efforts are on to trace the absconding prisoners.

Violence in Iraq killed 27 people today, officials said, as the cabinet discussed how to curb unrest that has left over 500 dead this month and raised fears of all-out sectarian conflict.

UK banks cut 189,000 jobs with employment at 9-yr low

UK’s four biggest banks will have eliminated about 189,000 jobs by the end of this year from their peak staffing levels, bringing employment to a nine-year low amid a dearth of revenue. More cuts may follow.

Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc, HSBC Holdings Plc, Lloyds Banking Group Plc and Barclays Plc will employ about 606,000 people worldwide by the end of 2013, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. That’s 24 per cent below the peak of 795,000 in 2008 and the least since 2004, when they employed 594,000 globally.

1.5 lakh students in rural Punjab to get Akash tablets

1.5 lakh students in rural areas would be provided with Akash tablets from this session at a cost of Rs 110 crore, Punjab government said on Tuesday. The government is fully committed to strengthen higher education in rural areas of the state and the education sector was a priority for the SAD-BJP government, Chief Parliamentary Secretary (Education) Inderbir Singh Bolaria said in Amritsar.

Housewife commits suicide by immolating herself along with kid

A thirty-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide along with her eight-month-old baby girl by setting herself on fire at their residence in Manikeshwari Nagar due to a “family dispute”, the police said.

Sowmya, who was “dejected” after petty quarrels with her husband Ramesh over some family dispute resorted to the extreme step by poured kerosene on herself and immolating herself. In the process, her eight-month-old baby girl also died, though her five-year-old daughter escaped in the mishap, the police said.

The Osmania University police has picked up Ramesh for questioning.
