TVS Motor sales down in April

Two and three wheeler maker TVS Motor Company Ltd closed last month with sales of 165,214 units, down from 174,455 units in April 2012, the Chennai-based company announced Wednesday.

The company said in a statement that it sold 160,502 two wheelers (domestic 142,794 units, exports 17,708 units) last month against 171,551 (domestic 151,181 units, exports 20,370 units) sold in April 2012.

Last month, TVS Motor sold 4,713 units up from 2,904 units sold in April 2012.

NASA extends Russia space travel deal

NASA will pay an additional $424 million to extend its contract with Russia’s federal space agency (Roscosmos) to transport US astronauts to and from the International Space Station (ISS), NASA said Tuesday.

About the move, America’s space chief said it underscores how diminished funding is hampering the US space programme.

“While our Russian counterparts have been good partners, it is unacceptable that we don’t currently have an American capability to launch our own astronauts,” NASA Administrator Charles Bolden wrote in a blog post Tuesday.

New blood test could predict Alzheimer’s risk

Scientists in Australia are working on a blood test that could lead to routine screening for Alzheimer’s disease.

They have identified blood-based signs of plaque in the brain that could alert doctors to the disease long before symptoms appear and irreversible brain damage has occurred, News.com.au reported.

“Early detection is critical. It gives people a much better chance of receiving treatment before it’s too late,” researcher Dr Samantha Burnham from CSIRO’s Preventative Health Flagship said.

Child bride raped by father-in-law

A 12-year-old child bride was allegedy raped by her 60-year-old father-in-law in Nagra area here, a senior officer said here today.

A person filed a complaint that her niece was raped by her father-in-law following which an FIR was lodged today, additional superintendent of police Ashok Tripathi said.

The girl, who is currently staying with her parents, had got married last year in November.

A medical examination of the girl will be conducted and further action will be taken after the rape has been confirmed, Tripathi said.

The distraught family of Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who was brutally assaulted in a Lahore jail last week, returned home via Wagah Border on Wednesday after doctors in Pakistan reportedly indicated that he was “clinically dead”.

Upon their return, Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur said that the family will try to meet UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi soon.

The family of Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, battling for life in Pakistan, returned to India Wednesday saying that they were dissatisfied with the way he was being treated and had been kept in the dark about his condition.

Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur, wife Sukhpreet and daughters Swapandeep and Poonam crossed the international border gates at Attari-Wagah at 11.30 a.m. They were immediately escorted by security officials to the briefing room of the Border Security Force (BSF) at Attari, 30 km from Amritsar.

Obama preparing to send lethal arms to Syrian rebels

President Barack Obama is preparing to send lethal weaponry to the Syrian opposition senior administration officials have said. The officials added that Obama has also taken steps to assert more aggressive U.S. leadership among allies and partners seeking the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad, the Washington Post reports. According to the report, the officials said they are moving towards the shipment of arms, but emphasized that they are still pursuing political negotiation.

Most Muslims want sharia as official law in Islam countries: Poll

More than three quarters of Muslims in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia favour traditional sharia to be ‘the official law of the land’ in all Islamic countries, but are divided on the issue of its application, a recent survey has revealed.

The survey conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life suggests that sharia is the framework of ultimate reality and ethical guidance that is derived from the Qur’an, which the Muslims believe should be the law applied in their private spheres such as for settling divorce issues and property disputes, News 24 reports.

Delhi-Lahore bus makes emergency stop at Ambala

The Delhi-Lahore bus made an emergency halt for about 90 minutes here Wednesday morning after a young woman passenger took ill.

According to police, the 21-year-old woman started vomiting when the bus, which started from Delhi this morning, was approaching Ambala, about 200 km from the national capital.

The bus was diverted to Baldev Nagar Police Station here from where the woman was taken in another vehicle under police escort to Civil Hospital here.

She was treated at the hospital and allowed to continue her journey.

The bus left Ambala for Lahore at 10:55 AM.

Sarabjit case: No action taken against jail authorities

Reports about the suspension of several Pakistani jail officials after the brutal assault on Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh last week have turned out to be an eyewash as authorities are yet to take action against anyone in Kot Lakhpat Jail.

Immediately after the assault on Sarabjit by other prisoners on Friday, officials had told the media that three or four prison officials, including the assistant superintendent, had been suspended.

However, official sources told PTI that not a single official of the prison has been suspended from service so far.

SC commutes death penalty for two murders

The Supreme Court Wednesday commuted to life imprisonment the death penalty of Mahindra Nath Das who was convicted for two murders and whose mercy petition had been rejected by the president.

The apex court bench headed by Justice G.S. Singhvi allowed the appeal by Das, who had challenged the rejection of his mercy plea by then president Pratibha Patil in 2011 after it had remained pending for more than 11 years.

US religious body concerned over Modi entry into US

A US federal advisory body has reiterated its concerns about Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s admissibility to the US due to his alleged “complicity in the 2002 riots” in the state.

Modi, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) Tuesday noted, was the only individual in whose case a provision of the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) was invoked in March 2005 to bar his entry. IRFA bars the entry of such individuals “responsible for or directly carried out…particularly severe violations of religious freedom.”

Protests staged in J&K over Sajjan Kumar”s acquittal

Protests are being staged in Jammu”s Digiana District after a district in New Delhi court acquitted former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. Harjeet Singh, a protester, criticized the government, and termed the verdict as an ”injustice” against the Sikh community. Sikh protesters shouted anti-government slogans and blocked roads on Wednesday. On Tuesday, a Delhi court acquitted Kumar and convicted five other accused of charges including rioting and murder in connection with the1984 anti-Sikh riots, nearly 29 years ago.

Rents of more than Rs. 3 crore payable to Waqf Board

The Waqf properties in India are used to eliminate educational and economic backwardness of Muslims and to eradicate poverty and unemployment prevalent among them but sadly no measures are being taken on government level to protect the waqf properties. As far as the rents of waqf properties are concerned, rents of more than Rs. 3 crore are due to Waqf Board. Although there are thousands of institutions and more than 1.5 lakh waqf land under Waqf Board but their control is in others hand while the Waqf Board in a way is deprived of their rightful use.

US concerned over assault on free press in Sri Lanka

Highlighting the attacks on a Tamil-language newspaper in Sri Lanka, the United States has said it would continue to “very directly” press its concerns for press freedom bilaterally as also through the international community.

Uthayan, a Tamil-language newspaper in Sri Lanka, “has seen its personnel beaten, its newspaper shipments burned, its equipment destroyed, and its offices set ablaze in this last month alone,” State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell told reporters Tuesday.

Congress MPs end agitation on Telangana issue

Five Congress MPs today ended their 48-hour agitation inside the Parliament complex demanding statehood for Telangana.

“We have concluded our agitation at 11 am. We are definitely expecting a positive result on this issue and we are sure that the message has reached the party High Command and top government level,” said Ponnam Prabhakar, one of the protesting MPs.

The protesting MPs had alleged that the Andhra Pradesh government is misleading the party high command on the Telangana issue.

The agitation began on Monday at 11 AM.
