Upon meeting Juhi up, close and personal on the sets of Zee TV’s “India’s Best Dramebaaz”, Vivek couldn’t contain his emotions.

“I had a huge crush on you after watching ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’,” Vivek told Juhi after watching her shake a leg to “Gazab ka hai din” from the same film, which completed 25 years since its release April 29.

Sarabjit’s family returns home, wants Manmohan to quit

Holding both the Indian and Pakistan governments responsible for his plight, the family of Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh Wednesday returned home determined to pursue the case with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Congress president and others.

The distraught family said Manmohan Singh should quit for having failed to save Sarabjit, who is battling for life in a Lahore hospital.

Suspected Hizbul militant Liyaqat Shah sent to JC till May 13

Suspected Hizbul militant Liyaqat Shah was today remanded in judicial custody till May 13 by a Delhi court after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) said that he was not required for further custodial interrogation.

Shah was arrested by the special cell of Delhi Police on March 20 in connection with a case registered against him for allegedly conspiring to carry out terror attacks in the national capital.

FIFA Honorary president Havelange resigns following bribery charges

Former president of the international football governing body FIFA, Joao Havelange, had resigned as the honorary president following a World Cup bribery case that has tarnished the organization for more than a decade. Stating that Havelange had resigned on April 18, a FIFA ethics court ruling said that the former president and his former son-in-law Ricardo Teixeira were guilty of ”morally and ethically reproachable conduct”, CBS News reports.

JKLF chief Yasin Malik to go on hunger strike

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik will stage a 48-hour hunger strike here, beginning Friday, to demand that the mortal remains of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru be handed over to his family in Kashmir.

Afzal Guru was hanged in Tihar Jail and buried there Feb 9.

The hunger strike is also aimed to press for the handing over of the remains of JKLF founder Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, who is also buried in Tihar Jail following his hanging in 1984.

US commission urges Washington to maintain visa ban on Narendra Modi

A US panel has urged Washington to maintain a ban on a visa to chief minister of Gujarat over anti-Muslim riots, even though he is a favourite to run for prime minister. The US Commission on International Religious Freedom said in a wide-ranging annual report that Gujarat”s Chief Minister Narendra Modi should be “inadmissible to the United States” due to “severe violations of religious freedom”, reports The Express Tribune.

Rehman Malik says conspiracy being hatched to bring pro-Taliban PM

Pakistan”s former Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said that conspiracy is being hatched to bring a pro-Taliban prime minister in the country. Malik was addressing a press conference, along with Awami National Party (ANP) leader Shahi Syed and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Dr Farooq Sattar, reports The News. Malik said terrorists want to disintegrate Pakistan. He said MQM chief Altaf Hussain had warned about Talibanization a year ago. Sattar alleged that Pakistani and international establishment was part of the conspiracy to hijack the May 11 polls.

Hezbollah hints at possible Syria intervention

Syrian rebels use chemical weapons: State TV

Militants in Syria have used chemical weapons against civilians with the aim of discrediting forces loyal to President Bashar Assad, Syrian state-run TV said on Tuesday.

“Terrorists gathered together residents of the city of Saraqib at the city’s southern gates and released a powder of unknown origin amongst them, causing asphyxiation, tremors and other breathing problems,” an official said.

Those injured by the chemicals had been taken to hospitals in Turkey to use the incident as the basis for accusing government forces of using chemical weapons, the official added.

Car bomb in Baghdad Shiite suburb kills 4

Iraqi officials say a car bomb in a Shiite suburb of Baghdad has killed four people and wounded 12 others.

Two police officers say the parked car bomb went off early morning today in Hussainya and killed four civilians.

They added that 12 others, including four policemen who were in a nearby checkpoint, were wounded. The Shiite-dominated district is located some 25 kilometers east of the center of the capital. A medical official confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to release information.

Ex-Tunisia dictator gets new life sentence

A court has convicted, in absentia, Tunisia’s former dictator of voluntary homicide and sentenced him to life in prison, the third such sentence for Zine El Abidine Ben Ali since he was overthrown in January 2011.

Ben Ali has been living in exile in Saudi Arabia, where he fled amid an uprising that toppled him after 23 years in power.

Tunisia’s state-run news agency TAP said he was tried for the death of a demonstrator and injuries to two others during a crackdown on protesters in the southern city of Sfax.

Pentagon steps up planning for military intervention in Syria

The Pentagon has stepped up planning for potential military intervention in the Syrian civil war.

The move comes specifically because of growing evidence the Syrian regime may have used chemical weapons.

According to CNN, a senior administration official said that ‘there is intensified planning underway as more precise evidence has come that the Syrian regime used chemical weapons’.

If President Barack Obama were to order action, it could involve thousands of US troops. The official said it’s not likely to involve troops on the ground in Syria.

Boston suspect could avoid death penalty in lieu of info

Obama acknowledges rising hate crimes in America

US President Barack Obama has acknowledged that over the last decade, a number of people from the South Asian origin particularly those from Hindu, Muslim and Sikh communities — have been subject to hate crimes in the country.

“In the last decade, South Asian Americans — particularly those who are Muslim, Hindu, or Sikh — have too often faced senseless violence and suspicion due only to the colour of their skin or the tenets of their faith,” Obama said in a proclamation to declare May as the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.

Nine injured as quake rocks J&K

At least nine people – seven children and two teachers – were injured when a 5.8-intensity quake rocked Jammu and Kashmir, as also large parts of north India, Wednesday afternoon, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted. There were also reports of buildings being damaged in the Jammu region.

“Seven children and 2 teachers reported injured in 3 different schools. Some damage to structures in the region of Doda, Gandoh & Baderwah,” Abdullah tweeted.

Polls would be held as scheduled: Ashfaq Parvez Kayani

In the face of mounting attacks by the Taliban on politicians and election meetings, army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Tuesday said there should be no doubt that Pakistan’s polls would be held as scheduled as they could usher in “true democratic values”.

Addressing an event to mark the Youm-e-Shahada (Day of Martyrs), Kayani reiterated the army’s commitment to holding of free and fair elections.

Father rapes daughter in AP, arrested

A 50-year-old man was on Wednesday arrested here for allegedly raping his daughter repeatedly over a year, police said.

G Ailaiah was apprehended this morning when his 29-year-old daughter filed a complaint with the police today in Jammikunta after she was sexually assaulted last night, they said.

The victim, who is pursuing her studies, has been sent for medical examination and investigations are on, police said, adding a case has been registered against the accused.

Child bride raped by father-in-law in UP

A 12-year-old child bride was allegedly raped by her 60-year-old father-in-law in Nagra area here, a senior officer said here Wednesday.

A person filed a complaint that her niece was raped by her father-in-law following which an FIR was lodged today, additional superintendent of police Ashok Tripathi said.

The girl, who is currently staying with her parents, had got married last year in November.

A medical examination of the girl will be conducted and further action will be taken after the rape has been confirmed, Tripathi said.

5.8-magnitude earthquake hits Pakistan

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook the Pakistani capital and many parts of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces though there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.

The quake, which occurred at 11.57 pm and lasted more than seven seconds, was felt in Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Gilgit and across Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

At many places, people rushed out of their homes and offices and began praying. This was the fourth major temblor to rock parts of Pakistan since last month.
