Taliban storm governor office building in Afghan Panjshir province, 7 killed

One policeman and six militants were killed early Wednesday morning when Taliban suicide bombers launched an attack on the provincial governor office building in eastern Afghan province of Panjshir, a provincial source said. “Six militants armed with suicide vests and weapons stormed the provincial governor compound at around 3 a.m. local time in Bazarak city. The attack and counter-attack claimed the lives of all attackers and one policeman,” the provincial government spokesman Rohullah Yousufi told Xinhua.

Obama jokes about lipstick smear on collar

President Obama, who was recently caught having lipstick stains on his shirt’s collar at Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration in the East Room, clarified that it came from a woman whom he greeted at a reception.

“Where”s Jessica Sanchez? It wasn”t Jessica, this is her aunt,” he said pointing to the lipstick mark on shirt’s collar, the Politico reported.

“Auntie, right there, look at this,” he said joking.

Indian student in Saudi Arabia commits suicide

An 18-year-old Indian youth in Saudi Arabia has committed suicide after failing in his class 12 exams held by India’s Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), results of which were declared Monday.

Mir Ameer Ansari, otherwise described as an intelligent student, just couldn’t come to terms with the fact that he failed in mathematics and took his own life in the city of Dammam in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, the Arab News reported Wednesday.

The cause of death was not given but the report said police were investigating the circumstances leading to the teenager killing himself.

India, Japan to accelerate negotiations on N-deal

India and Japan today agreed to “accelerate” negotiations for early conclusion of the much anticipated bilateral civil nuclear deal.

This was stated by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during a joint press conference here along with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh.

“The two countries will accelerate negotiations for the early conclusion of the civilian nuclear agreement,” Abe said.

Negotiations for the civil nuclear cooperation agreement have not made much headway since Japan was struck by Fukushima nuclear disaster in March, 2011.

Teenaged girl stabbed, burnt alive by lover

A 17-year-old youth in Italy repeatedly stabbed his 15-year-old girlfriend, doused her with petrol and set her ablaze, thinking she had “betrayed” him when the girl refused to have sex with him.

The youth, named only as D.M., told police he stabbed his girlfriend several times in the abdomen during a quarrel after school in Corigliano Calabro village.

The boy then went and bought a can of petrol, returned to the field where the seriously injured girl lay bleeding, splashed the petrol over her and lit a match.

BJP women will get equal opportunity in 2014 polls: Smriti Irani

In the Khyber Paktunkhwa (KP) Assembly, out of 124 newly-elected members, 123 took oath. Outgoing Speaker Kiramatullah Khan administered the oath to the newly-elected members, reported Xinhua.

Not recommended to legalise betting: Sports ministry

The union sports ministry Wednesday dismissed reports suggesting that it has favoured legalising betting in the wake of the spot fixing controversy.

“The ministry of sports has also observed that a section of the media has reported that it is in favour of a law regularising betting in the sporting events in the country. The ministry clarifies that betting is a state subject and cannot be part of a central law. The ministry has made no recommendations to regularise betting to the law ministry or to any other organisation,” read a sports ministry statement.

Two workers die of suffocation in Odisha

Two construction workers, including a woman died of suffocation while working for construction of a latrine at Girishola in Ganjam district, police said today.

The deceased were identified as D Saraswati (35) and G Ramaswamy (30), police said.

Two other workers engaged in the well also fell ill in the incident yesterday.

They were taken into MKCG Medical College and Hospital here for treatment. Police rushed to the spot and investigation was in progress.

Fire breaks out at Taj Banjara hotel kitchen

Fire in the kitchen of famous Taj Banjara hotel spread panic on Tuesday. The incident occurred at 9 pm. According to details the fire led to panic among hotel staff. Banjara Hills police was informed immediately. A team of police reached the spot and called fire fighting team from Film Nagar and Assembly who soon extinguished the fire.

Police suspects that the fire broke out in the hotel due to an electrical short-circuit. A case has also been registered in this connection.

According to the details, one C H Ramadevi, 32, is the neighbour of one Praveen Kumar of Anand Nagar, Malakpet.

Praveen Kumar had gone out to attend some function at the residence of his relatives and taking advantage of his absence, Ramadevi had stolen 25 tolas gold ornaments from his house.
