Varun Gandhi likens Rajnath Singh to Vajpayee

Amid talks of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) anointing Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as prime ministerial candidate for upcoming Lok Sabha polls, party general secretary Varun Gandhi Wednesday called party president Rajnath Singh “fit for the top job”.

Speaking at a public rally in Bareilly, 250 km from here, Gandhi remembered former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as the person who brought him to politics but added that it was in Singh that he saw the future leader of the country.

Woman alleges rape by five, including two brothers-in-law

A 22-year-old woman accused five people, including two of her brothers-in-law, of raping her in south Delhi, police said Wednesday.

In her complaint to police, the young woman alleged that she was gang-raped by the five men near gate No. 4 of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences late Tuesday night.

The three others involved in the crime were friends of her brothers-in-law, police said.

The accused have all been arrested.

According to the woman, a resident of R.K. Puram, the men came to meet her husband for some personal work Tuesday night.

Pakistan sets up medical team for Sarabjit’s postmortem

A medical team is being constituted to conduct the postmortem examination of Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh who died in a Lahore hospital Thursday, a media report said.

Sarabjit Singh died in Lahore’s Jinnah hospital, reported Dawn.

His body has been moved to the morgue.

Hospital sources said the postmortem examination would be conducted soon and a medical team is being constituted.

He suffered serious head injuries after being attacked by two prisoners at Kot Lakhpat jail April 26. He had been on ventilator support since then.

India seeks Sarabjit, family asks PM to quit

India Wednesday made a fervent appeal to Pakistan to release the critically injured death row prisioner Sarabjit Singh or at least to shift him to a third country for “proper treatment”, while his fuming family hit out at both New Delhi and Islamabad and asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to quit.

India once again asked Pakistan to release Sarabjit on “humanitarian and sympathetic grounds”, and said “this is not the time for invoking legal and bureaucratic reasons for not taking the right steps to save a human life”.

Sarabjit Singh dies in Lahore hospital

Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who was admitted to a Lahore hospital after being savagely attacked in jail, died Thursday, a media report said.

Sarabjit Singh died in Lahore’s Jinnah Hospital, reported Geo News.

The head of the medical panel of the hospital was quoted as saying that Sarabjit succumbed to injuries at 12.45 a.m. (Pakistan time) or (1.15 a.m. Indian standard time)

Sarabjit’s lawyer Awais Shiekh told an Indian news channel that Sarabjit’s death was confirmed by hospital authorities.

Chinese troops reinforce postion in DBO; get regular supplies

China has reinforced its position in Daulat Bag Oldi (DBO) sector, 19km deep inside Indian territory, where they are getting regular supplies through trucks.

According to reports sent to the Union home ministry, the Chinese side had adopted agressive posture during patrolling in the DBO sector, where they have picted five tents, and were refusing to end the face-off which has entered the third week.

Consumer is king: SC says and clears hurdles for FDI in retail

The Supreme Court today cleared the hurdles for the implementation of FDI in multi-brand retail sector saying that the “consumer is king and if that is the philosophy working behind the policy then what is wrong”.

The apex court said the policy aimed at “throwing out” the middleman, who are “curse to Indian economy” and “sucking” it, has to be “welcomed”.

A bench headed by Justice R M Lodha said the policy does not suffer from any unconstitutionality or illegality requiring it to be quashed.

India strongly asks Pak to release Sarabjit

Concerned over the condition of Sarabjit Singh, who has slipped into “non-reversible coma”, India today strongly asked Pakistan to release him immediately for best available treatment, saying this was not the time for invoking “legal and bureaucratic reasons”.

“We are concerned at the condition of Sarabjit Singh indicated by reports made available by doctors treating him in Jinnah Hospital (in Lahore).

Chinese PLA adopt aggressive posturing; get regular supplies

Chinese troops are maintaining an aggressive posture and showing no signs of retreating from the Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO) sector where they have pitched their five tents and are getting regular supplies through trucks.

Three more held for Boston bombing

Three more suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing have been taken into custody, Boston police said Wednesday, but assured people that “there is no threat to the public”.

CNN citing a Department of Homeland security source said all three are students, including one who is a US citizen.

“They have been arrested on charges of making false statements to investigators and conspiracy to obstruct justice,” it said.

Boston police added via Twitter: “Please be advised there is no threat to the public.”

Two killed, 28 injured in Syria blasts

Two people were killed and 28 others wounded Wednesday in twin blasts in the Syrian capital, a local media report said.

A man and a 10-year-old boy were killed and 28 others were wounded, some of them seriously, when two explosive devices ripped through the Khaled Bin al-Walid Street and Bab Musalla Square here, the state-run SANA news agency said, according to Xinhua news agency.

The Khaled Bin al-Walid’s blast occurred when “terrorists” detonated a motorcycle rigged with explosives in front of a commercial shop, said SANA, adding that both explosions caused material damage.

Delhi launches pension plan for informal sector workers

The state government Wednesday launched the Delhi Swavlamban Scheme, to offer a pension for workers in the unorganised sector.

The announcement was made in the state assembly, which is meeting in its budget session. The scheme will be a co-contributory pension programme in collaboration with the Swavalamban scheme of the centre.

“It is time to minimize the difference between the workers and owners. We must understand the difficulties of workers in order to make our worker welfare component comprehensive and satisfactory,” Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit said Wednesday.

Modi slams Centre for being soft on Pakistan

Alleging that the central government was being soft on Pakistan, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today said every Indian “should feel ashamed” over the beheading of two Indian soldiers by that country’s troops.

“Every proud Indian should feel ashamed when heads of two of our soldiers are axed at the border. This is shameful.

India is being mocked at,” Modi said while addressing ‘Vivekananda Youth Sammelan’ on the occasion of Gujarat’s 53rd Foundation Day programme.

Iran, Turkey ties key to regional security: Tehran

The ties between Iran and Turkey are strategic and contribute to the regional security, an official said here Wednesday.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast made the remarks during a meeting with his visiting Turkish counterpart Levent Gumrukcu here, the Press TV said, according to Xinhua news agency.

They discussed regional and international developments, bilateral issues and the means to expand media cooperation between Tehran and Ankara, the report said.

Sarabjit’s family to meet Home Minister on Thursday

The family of Sarabjit Singh, who is lying in coma in a Lahore hospital after an attack in a Pakistan jail, will meet Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde in New Delhi on Thursday to seek his better treatment and bringing him back home. Official sources said Shinde has given time to the family, including Sarbjit’s sister Dalbir, to hear their grievances.

The family, which crossed over to India after visiting 49-year-old Sarabjit, said his life can be saved if the Indian government puts pressure on Pakistan to shift him to this country or abroad for better treatment.

Girl gang-raped in moving car, slapped by doctor to keep mum in UP

A college girl was abducted and allegedly gangraped in a moving car by four men in Colonelganj area of the city.

The girl, who was gangraped on April 27, also alleged that she was threatened and slapped during her medical examination by a woman doctor, who asked her to withdraw her complaint.

Two of the accused have been arrested, police said, adding the girl has identified one of them.

Earlier, the police had registered a case of abduction and assault, however, a case of rape was registered later.

31 people sent to jail for drunken driving

Hyderabad, May 1 (INN): As many as 31 people have been convicted by different courts for driving in inebriated condition.

While the Third Metropolitan Magistrate B Chengalaraya Nayudu convicted 30 persons for a period of three days, the Fourth Metropolitan Magistrate Siva Sankar Prasad convicted one person for a period of two days imprisonment each for drunken driving.The Enforcement against Drunk Driving was carried out over the last weekend on April 26 and 27th.
